First this is in the wrong forum, I would place this in the Simtrop Related forum.

Second I think that your judgement is unfair, most people who seem to be putting down other members have probably been bored to death by telling people to stop it, so it's understandable that once in a while they get a little annoyed and, heaven forbid, maybe even post a word in caps.[:0]

Also, the people who are being scolded have usually done it numerous times. For example, this was your first time posting in the wrong forum, so I tried to be kind and sound as non threatening as possible, but if you did it say 10 times, then I would probably get angry and maybe have a little rant.

Hope that you see we're not all that bad! And welcome Simtropolis!

^^ I agree with Evil Muzz. Sometimes, certain newcomers will not read the rules, and do not abide by them. When one comes to sites like this, they should be familiar with the rules, or about internet posting etiquette in general (no trolling, spamming, useless threads, etc). So, behave, Knaves!

I have noticed an increasing of people who send in messages, make comments ect. being put down in rather abrupt terms lately. Almost always by people with little medals next to their avatar and usually because the members made a mistake such as posting on the wrong forum. No doubt these people have made a sizeable contribution to the game but can someone reign in the zeal with which they are scolding people.

yes i agree! some people need to step down to earth, you've got a custom title and emmber of the month.. so what? 47.gif
some people need to be more helpful nono0xz.gif and please dont use caps please learn to spell type responses are not helpful at all. just stick to answering the questions 28.gif
if i find a question on the forum i'll usually try answer it without picking apart the post

I was relatively lucky in the fact that I wasn't bullied by anybody....well, 1 guy, who actually was dumb enough to have a racist avatar, and was mean to everyone...but as long as you appear nice and friendly, you should be OK. That way, the $%&^! hunters won't bite your fingers...

It might do some of the people on here to realize not all of us have great computer skills.  When you consider some are computer genius level and understand everything, while others are (like me) more of grade school level, this can cause difficulty.  I would never ask a question on here because from what I have read, I would be told I am in the wrong forum. I am not very bright, I should use the search engine.  As for the search engine, great when you know exactly what you want and can type in the key word, but a general search can bring up so much unrelated information.  Just try typing in CJ--way to many pages.  But i will continue to read and attempt things and eventually learn.  I really enjoy adding the downloads and things to my game it makes my game so much better.  Not everything I download works, but eventually i will figure it out.  And the read me--yeah, I use that.  Some are nice with direct links, others are just thanking a few people and not telling me what i need.

Bullies--I think not.  It is more frustrated experts with no patience for those who  are not.  Perhaps the best rule is--if you have nothing nice to say, say nothing!

And this my very first post on here.

Ive noticed a few supposedly high ranking simtropolis members making less-than-polite comments, just beacause you have the power to Ban or remove posts of a Newbie, doesn't neccesairly mean you have too. If these people can't be resonsible and conduct themselves in a polite manner they have no buisness being in that high-ranked position within Simtropolis. Regardless of having the same questions asked by many newbies or the like, or having the wrong topics posted in the wrong forum. You should already expect this, and while annoying, it still comes part and parcel of being a moderator and the like. If you feel you've had enough, and have to resort to pettiness, perhaps you should stand down, and let someone else take the reigns...

Some thoughts of mine, since I'm concerned a little about some peoples on ST attitudes as well..

    - Shouldn't only moderators correct peoples posts?
    - Never insult people by correcting their grammar. Perhaps their English isn't that good or what's also possible: they may have dislexia! It's incredibly insulting to play teacher, unless someone asks you to help them with their language; respect the mistakes everyone makes.
    - Sometimes correcting someone is in order: posting in the wrong thread is something that can be mentioned to the poster. Only moderators should do so though.
    - When correcting someone with good reason (e.g. wrong thread) do so in order to help that poster enjoy SimTropolis better, not worse! Telling someone that his/her post will get more replies in a different forum is helping them. Writing something that indirectly implies the poster is a sucker that should have read the forums rules before daring to post is nasty.. The later happens all to often, and unfortunately people who do this are very unaware of it.34.gif

Seems that we can't say anything without someone taking offence. Stand up for yourself, make some meaningful posts, contribute and read the rules. Then you won't be slagged off.

hey guys, it's with some tepidity that i keep this thread open - mainly because i think some good points are being made by both sides.
HOWEVER, i do ask that no personal attacks are made here, that we do not get into a flaming war, nor should this be a $%&^! hunt.

that said, i again must say i agree with both sides. i have seen some come down a bit hard on others for seemingly little crimes - i myself have been guilty of this a few times. the ego is a very powerful thing, and can be dangerious to those who have been on the site, as well as those who have not been on the site as long. in a site this big, there are bound to be many different types of egos and personalities - and they will not all get along.
i would also like to say this...if someone feels they are being bullied, don't be afraid to contact a moderator. if you feel you are being mistreated by a moderator, first off tell that moderator so, and if you feel a compromise is not being reached, perhaps contacting an administrator is the next step.

at the same time, we should not be so sensative when being told were are wrong. heck, i have been wrong MANY times...i accept that. i have stepped over lines, i have posted in the wrong forums, i have asked questions which i could have found the answers for quite easily. in most of these cases, someone else set me right - many times i had to set myself right. perhaps some responses were a bit short, occassionally they were rude - but i always took them as a lession learned. a site this large MUST have some semblance of order, and some rules. if not, it just becomes another Myspace...take a look there, and you will experience some of the true horrors of unmoderated web space (at least, that is IMHO).
    rant is off.

i just leave once again with these words...play nice, everyone.

There is a continuum.   On one end of the continuum, there is everyone, randomly doing what they want, where they want, resulting in no one being able to find the information or discussion they are looking for.  At the other end of the continuum, everything is so oppressive and controlled that everyone is miserable.  Obviously, the

Thanks for the comments Shinagawa, and welcome to Simtropolis  9.gif

This community has been established for quite some time now, and a lot of people have been coming here, posting and been a part of the site for well over a year, some even two years. They know the protocol here, they know where to post, they know the rules etc, and I do think that leads to some frustration when new members, who aren't accustomed to this come in and do things that are almost unnacceptable to these veterans.   I'm not excusing rudeness at all, I never think there is ever a cause to rude on this forum or site in general; but this is a well established community, who are somewhat set in their ways in some respects.  43.gif

The whole point that I set up the new members forum, was to give the newer members somewhere to go to have all their questions answered.  We have a vast knowledge of SC4 on this site, in the omnibus and contained in the forums, and I think we must have just about covered every possible scenario and question that this game can generate by now, so unfortunately that also leads to frustration when people ask the same old questions without searching.  The new members forum contains various articles, threads and links that should help the newer members find the information they are looking for, and we have some really great moderators in that area who look after it well.  There are also plenty of veterans who do answer questions in there, and I hope that our veterans are more aware that people posting in that area are new to the site and game, and looking for advice and asking questions.

You also have to remember that SC4 is verging on being an old game now, a lot of people here no longer play the game and have moved on to other games, I personally haven't touched it in probably over a year, I'm here purely for the community, and I believe that of a lot of people here now.   However, I will not tolerate anyone being rude to anyone else on this site, and I think the comment that if you have nothing nice to say, say nothing, stands well in this situation.  I will say to everyone, that my PM box is always open and I do read everything that comes into it, if you ever feel upset at how you are treated on these forums, then please do contact me.

Well, lovely thread this is. 3.gif

Seriously, it's good that someone had the guts to bring this up. I feel that Simtropolis was starting to drift a bit towards a place where newbies were harrassed. We are getting better, and there are many people who put some serious effort into making newbies, especially those who don't understand english, feel more welcome. But there are people who, possibly out of annoyance of answering the same question many times, lose there temper on a poor newbie who has no clue what was going on.

When I first came to Simtropolis i had no clue what forums were, what they were for and how they worked. So, to see how the system worked and cause i needed help, I made a topic titled exactly the same as the top topic in the branch of the forums i clicked. Now, I know there are many people out there that would have flamed me into hell for doing such a stupid thing, and looking back on it it was stupid, but I didn't know better. Thankfully, one kind memeber (forgot his name, wish i didn't, really good guy) didn't flame me, but instead answered my question and gave me a few clues on forum etiquette. Amazingly simple, yet amazingly effective. Thanks to him i caught on amazingly quickly.

There are many people who come here who are just like me, who have no clue what a forum is and they may need some guidance yes, and that may require some effort to train, to lead to the New Members branch maybe, but is it really that hard. In my opinion, that little amount of effort we put in might help us out in the long run. Imagine if that kid you just flamed out of this place would've been the next great BATter, or modder. If the guy that talked to me had just flamed me instead, I probably would've left this site for good.

So that's my 2 cents, and a bunny/ducky combo, for the hell of it 35.gif40.gif

    Hi everyone!

It's sometimes hard to express your feelings in writing. Therefore missunderstandings can occur.

A this is the wrong forum answer might upset you but the member posting such a response maybe didn't mean to
    offend you.

I guess the 35.gif are great to let someone know your feelings. Do we need the 26.gif?

lonaryl asked if only moderators should correct peoples post, I would like to know that too.
I try to help as many noobs as possible, guiding them right on Simtropolis and I wish to continue do that.

My opinion: If you feel upset about someones mistake in posting, just don't post a reply if you're going to give them a hard time.
Sooner or later someone will come along and help them in a nice way.

I think I have some good advice for newbies- If you are new, let people know that, let people know that you don't really know the gist of the site yet, and that you may need some help. Then, i think people would be more understanding then if you come into chat or forums and just ask random questions. If you do that, people will get annoyed, and probabley raise their voice at you. First and foremost though, read the rules. They actually DO help navigate your way around the site.
I am another person who thinks that both arguments have some good points. People do not have to be so snappy when answering a question, but on the other hand, read the rules and forums so that you might be able to get the answer to a question yourself.
I know i haven't been a member for a long time, but i have been on long enough to understand the way the site runs. Read the rules, be nice to everyone (newb or not),try to have fun and everything should be fine.

I have found that, with most misbehaving new kids on the block, if I send them a PM pointing out the rules are here , many of them will reply with some version of Oh, thanks, I didn't know.

Then there are those who don't care what the rules are, want to come in here, kicking doors open, declaring they will behave however they want.  Those people usually end up banned very quickly.

I agree that both sides have valid points.  Moderators and such shouldn't bite off a newbies' head, and newbies should let people know that they are new to the site.

Moderators have to deal with trolls and people who post in the wrong forum all of the time.  Imagine how annoyed you would be if your brother or sister asked you twenty times over the course of a month for something.  Such is the life of a moderator.  This doesn't excuse moderators from being polite, it just explains why they may be stern with you.  Even if a moderator closes your thread, the moderator is probably not mad at you.

If you are a newbie, then a good place to learn about the forum rules is dirk's guide to posting.  A link is posted below.

Read the rules, FOLLOW them, and all should go well for you.

If you tried to use the search tool to find a thread, but you couldn't; then either ask a moderator for the location (the preferred method) or create a thread and just expect it to get closed.  If you create a thread, then tell everyone that you couldn't find what you were looking for, and people will probably go easy on you.

I hope that this helps all the newbies out there understand what's going on.  Don't be afraid to PM the staff if you need help.  Who knows, instead of just finding an answer, you might become really good friends.

Actually, I have mentioned this before and obviously, no one paid any attention to me.  So therefore, since this behavior is continuing, I have one thing to say to those members who think they are god.  Whenever you are in simtropolis, you are not GOD, since there is no GOD mode here.  So with that said, thank you for those that are considerate, and I apologize, but to those jerks, you can take my membership and do what you may.

Most of the members here are nice, but you do get the few that are not. If they are only here to cause trouble, the admins will put a stop to it, and ban them from ST. If anybody makes mistakes, the moderators will solve it, and not any old person can be a moderator, as they are picked by the admins, and even the Dirktator Himself 40.gif.

If you don't treat ST with respect, you can leave and slam the door behind you, and throw they key under water 7.gif.

Sometimes I've found myself helping new members over and over again about the same topic...it gets annoying...but i try to have patience and be nice...but some are like Well you've been here a long time!...you should be able to answer my question!!...I hate you!!....Then i'm like...47.gif...
But then there are those new members who ask ,in a very polite way, for help (they tend to abuse this smilie tho...17.gif....) and they get all these insults by the old members and by some guys who need to realize that they ARE still newbies.....but they act like if they knew everything about the game or Simtropolis...these are the ones that really pisses me of....they have like 140 post(all come from the forum games section), they have been here barely a month, and yet they act like these SC4 gurus28.gif....
