IMHO Grindenwald bit was the main hint. I had suspected something about Dumbledore being gay when I read the 7th book.

I thought this is not some kind of an adult fiction book...but I am wrong It seems they include gay characters even in Children books too.

It is definitely real, but I feel that this is just one final desperate attempt from JK Rowling to keep in the spotlight now that her book series over. 21.gif

This really turns Dubledore into a truly tragic figure.  After killing the love of his life, he now sublimates his sexuality by becoming the epitome of light vs. darkenss.  The fact that his lover belonged to the dark side may have certainly figured in this.

Grindelwald never died..

And this is interesting. Wonder how many 'hints' she left in the books.

Well, that would explain those fancy velvety robes he's always described in. 19.gif

Rowling has never been shy about weaving mythology into the story, so why not some real tragic elements.

I wouldn't call them hints. It's more a matter of reading between the lines.

I wasn't sure from the context, but I thought that in this case defeat was fatal.  What did happen to Grindelwald?  Maybe he got to share the fate of Eddiing's apostate wizard from the Belgariad.  (Immured in bedrock, if you haven't read it).

Great, something new for the Southern Baptist Convention to kvetch about.

This also gives new meaning to the term "Hogwarts". 3.gif

I never even suspected that he was gay - of course, I'm oblivious most of the time any way (like I have no cue what DT's reference to Hogwarts means - NO! Don't tell me, I can tell from the reactions I don't want to know!).  Furthermore, I don't see what difference it makes.  I can understand JKR outing him because she wants the films to stay true to her vision, but his sexual orientation has no bearing on "Harry's" story.  Besides, he 'dies' in The Half Blood Prince anyway.....   (Sorry if I spoiled the book for anyone)

I disagree.  She was answering fan questions when it came out, and she never did seem to be the one to come up with a marketing ploy to help sell H. P....not that it really needs it.

And even if it did, why would she choose something so relatively small like Dumbledore being gay to use as a marketing strategy (especially since there are still so many other things we don't know about him that I think would work better)?  I can't see that selling books or making people want to watch the movies more.  I can't even see it as a reason to re-read the whole series to try and find clues (just something else to look for if you were already in the process, as I was).

Sorry about the 2pr thing if it applies here.

Homosexuality is a hot button issue in many places and a demographic that hasn't been specifically targeted by the HP commercial interests.  The "startling revelation" sparked press interest which inevitably leads to increased sales.  I'm not specifically accusing JK Rowling of anything though.  Authors are rarely involved in the commercial handling of their product.

She already released the last book, anyway I couldn't care less. I stopped caring about HP after about the 3rd book.

I know nothing about the stories or the characters just that J.K.Rowling is the best selling children's author and purportedly richer than the Queen.

I'm glad that SHE actually decided to out the character and not leave it to speculation in the media as happened with the telletubbies and some other children's characters. It will also be interesting to see how the parents react to this news. How many parents who couldn't wait to be the first to buy their children the new books and hailed her as a great author will now say her writing is trash and burn all the kid's copies of her works? It's a shame, really, but I know that's how many will react. I can hear it now...a pedophilic predator who casts spells on the poor innocent children and indoctrinates them into a godless hedonistic life from which there is no escape. Unfortunately, what I write as cynical irony is what too many people actually believe. Even though it's 2007, some people still just don't get it.

In today's world, with so many parents tiptoeing around the subject of homosexuality with their children, what better way to bring some awareness of the subject to kids than to introduce a gay character into a story that they are familiar with? Let them ask questions. Let them be aware that gays are, in fact everywhere and not stuffed away in a closet or seen only in the gay pride parades or oter media events. I think I'd take exception if she started describing the guy's sexual exploits, but just bringing a character out of the closet may actually bring about some awareness for a kid who has been having questions about his/her own sexuality and allow them to ask questions that they might otherwise not ask.

Also, I've read speculation in the media from time to time so I was wondering, is J.K. Rowling herself gay? As noted often in above posts, "gay" is a hot-button word and the media loves to sling it around, particularly when it involves the rich and famous. If we listened to the media and believed all of their hyperbole, there wouldn't be any straight people left anywhere in the world. Which is why I ask if there is anything to the media's assertations or if they are just the usual rumours perpetrated by the press in their usual lust for higher sales and sensationalism.

Actually, that just makes him a really old gay guy with a big beard.

To qualify for "bear," you have to be a big guy. Not just hairy. Dumbledore is far too slim, as he is described.
