Dumbledore is Gay

I'm not a huge Harry Potter fan but I did find it interesting that one of the most important characters in a popular fiction novel turns out to be gay.  What does everyone think about this? I think its pretty interesting but I'm afraid that he'll be identified as "the big gay wizard" and not for his actual character. On top of that, although doubtful, I don't want Dumbledore to be some poster child of homosexuality.  Although I do think its pretty cool that Rowling has included a gay character although I do not know how it adds to the plot having not read the books.

Aww that is so adorable. It doesn't suprise me. I am happy to see a gay character in Harry Potter. Personally I always thought it would be Percey Weasley.

Ugh. I do wish JK had kept that on the Downlow. This just gives people another reason to find villainy in a good book series.

Does it really matter? She could have made one of Harry's friends gay, that would be interesting 9.gif

well, this is pretty suprising, i don't think there was anyone in the book id suspect of being gay. Guess dumbledore is good at keeping secrets.

And that is the problem.  I'm glad she "outed" him.  The longer people keep it a big, shameful secret, the longer it stays a big, shameful secret.

We do have a lock on wizards, don't we?  First Gandalf and now Dumbledore.  9.gif

Don't judge the character on the films. While the characters and the basic storyline are basically the same. The portrayal of the characters is shown through the acting. Richard Harris (The original actor who played Dumbledore until he died in 2002) portrayed the character of Dumbledore EXACTLY as he is in the book, from the general appearance, to his actions, to the vocal tones of calm that are described in the book. Michael Gambon portrays the character in a more aggressive manner, as we have seen throughout films 3, 4 and 5. Some people (like myself) don't like this portrayal, but there is nothing we can do about it.

Back to the character himself. It's a surprise that he is gay, but so what? It was never mentioned because it made no impact on the story whatsoever. Anyone who picks up the books and read them are never going to know that Dumbledore is homosexual unless someone tells them so. It has only been mentioned now to stop the filmmakers making an error though one of the lines they were planning on putting into the film about one of Dumbledore's past girlfriends. I personally don't see why there is such a big news interest in it...

because, any news story involving harry potter or the word gay attracts attention, so when they combine the two, its gold 3.gif

I'd say he was straight...he gets married to Ginny in the end, doesn't he?  (<--spoiler).  But that was pretty obvious.  The reason this thread exists is to inform, really...I didn't know that Dumbledore was gay (because it wasn't obvious), and now I do, and so does everyone else who reads it.  Not a big deal, just a cool tidbit (and more info when it comes to Harry Potter, no matter how small, is always a good thing because there's still so much we don't know).

He's gay? Wow.... Dude... That's just weird for a children's book. The most powerful wizard in the world also likes men... Who would have known if it wasn't explained in the novels?

But still, what a twist! Thats really interesting!

The question is why?

Whats the point of puting this out now? ( besides to get it in th news)

it has no effect on the story or plot or anything so why even mention it?

Do they think no ones going to see the next moive?

I think this is a hoax.

I was kind of disapointed that JK announced that Dumbledore was gay. I do not have anything against gay people, but it just seems like an un-needed peice of attention that Harry Potter detractors will cling on to.

Lol it makes you question why dumbledore was so close to harry. I mean he turns down head minister posts multiple times...to be closer to CHILDREN! LOl can you say child predator 3.gif Nah dumbledore still rocks

It's not that...the reason this came out, as it was stated in the news story, is because the makers of the sixth movie were going to imply that Dumbledore had some kind of interest in some girl. That wouldn't be right in J. K.'s mind since Dumbledore is gay (even though it wasn't directly stated or even implied)...so she let it out.

Heh, as if it weren't enough, it turns out that one of the characters is a gay pagan witch. Just wait, we'll be seeing some angry parents foaming at the mouth. 3.gif

It really surprises me when people react about a character being gay. Like why did Rowlings do that? You don't get to pick who's gay in real life.

Not a Harry Potter reader, so the character isn't familiar. But unless it is directly from JKR, it smells like a hoax or publicity stunt, possibly a trial balloon. If it causes a cry, the publishers know that maybe it's not the best direction. If it is generally well-received, then one might to expect to see it in the next book. To me, HP has nothing to do with Christianity at all, so I'm not getting too worked up. I used to love The Executioner series as a kid (Don Pendleton's Mack Bolan and his one-man war on The Mob) but I'm certainly no spree killer, if you catch my drift.

Let no one yield, we're on the field where deeds eclipse the sun; where the brave are told on a thread of gold, the tapestry is spun. As they speak of dreams, their armor gleams, this calm before the storm... Where all can see their destiny, the bishop takes the pawn.
