Another thing to realize about programmers is if they will get paid for writing something, they arn't gonna write it on their own time. 2.gif

This is a feature that EA wants to make money off of, from a different expansion pack. It was probably left in the .dats by accident, like some of the beta editing tools Tropod found a while back. I wouldn't be surprised if there are a lot more terraforming tools that WERN'T left in, like the ability to choose your terrain type, different flora sets (tundra, winter, desert, jungle), etc. My guess is Maxis and EA have a terrain/weather related expansion in the works.

do you think it would be possible to get the water to stay?
i know that you say that currently it doesnt stay, but that picture with the bridge over the mountain-top lake made me wonder how that shot was taken unless he took it really fast before the water dissappeared.

HELLO!!!

Guys! This would be the perfect way to make land bridges! We make it, exit the game, come back, no water, bridge on land!!! BING-O! lol...

But constrictor, the water disappears when you exit the game.

Whatever the reasons that these tantalising crumbs have been found lurking around the murkier sections of the game, one thing is clear: it isn't going to stop with Rush Hour, and Maxis (no doubt urged with hot, pointy instruments by EA) aren't going to sit on their hands and wait either. When they produced SC4, they were already turning many of the concept of SimCity on its head (3D rendering, monthly budgets, micro-fiscal management), and were doing it at double speed. It was never taken as read that their creative juices were embodied in a single disk. They had hordes of people building this game from the concepts-up. It wasn't a case of 'let's get the foundations of gameplay in place, then get God mode sorted, then Mayor mode...' ad infinitum. They sat down, threw a whole heap of concepts around, and then they had to get as many of them working as they could before a predefined date. These files are not lost, missing, teasers or challenges to our community. They are simply work in progress that slipped through the net when they sent the game out. We will get them, and we will no doubt get 75% of the things that have been mentioned on countless wish-lists. It's just a matter of time.

You can already do that now. When I zone a huge length of blacktop, if it goes between 2 steep hills, alot of times I have to stop and shorten it because it tries to build a bridge over land that it percieves to be over water. On the region I am currently using, there is alot of places it looks like surface water should be going by the terrain, so when I lay blacktop, I have to go in short lengths otherwise it will try to put a bridge over land.

As far as the topic goes, until the water is saveable, I don't understand what the big deal is. So you can make surface water now, that is until you save. When the mod is released(if its possible) I'll get excited, until then I'll wait and not rush them.

Ok, if the Lakes work in every way but saving, you all asume that saving is the only error and it was put there intenally. What if they couldn't figure out the lakes and neaghbor conection thing? So deactivated when they released it.

This isn't really a great theory. They know we can do mods. This is nothing in comparison to what has been done before. This is simply putting a menu item in to access a feature they left out.

Rain may look great but Ninja's floating and adjoined buildings were the real clever work. Maxis does not need to further test our skills.

Yes you do need rush hour for these to work, as previously stated by Teirusu "There seems to be three more hidden terraform tools in RH: Lake, Spring, and Rain" and just incase you dont know what rh stands for it means "rush hour" so5.gif

In the reader:

1. Open up simcity1.dat and open the exemplar analyser.

2. Load the exemplars by clicking Search

3. Click the tree icon

4. Find Terraform

5. Find GodValleyRain, rightclick it and click add to patch.

6. Close Analyser and click Patch icon in main window

7. click create dat ... and save like a normal file

8. Open this file in reader - you can use the windows open with feature to do this or just click open in the reader.

9. when loaded, click Fill the List

10. Click on the exemplar file in the list

11. Right click in some of the white space on the right where all the properties are.

12. Click add property

13. Put 0xEA33D694 in the value box in the resulting dialog.

14. Change the type to unit32

15. click the add button. A value will appear in the list: this must be set to 0x00000000. (Thanx Tropod.)

16. Click apply and save file. Leave in the plugin folder and load simcity.

A new icon should appear at the top of the rivers, valleys etc submenu --- it can be identified only by the name it gives itself as you didn't change the icon in the steps above.

Okay, here it is, a Dat that will unlock the Rain and Lake tool. Note that this is ONLY for Rush Hour AND any water it creates is NOT saved!

You can find both of these tools in the Level Terrain Menu in God Mode.

Special Thanks to Tropod whom helped me fix a bug. 24.gif

Check this out, this is a pic when I tried the rain on buildings.  I really let loose a storm and it covered up most. It looks weird cause of the jagged edges on the some of the buildings but the lower one just kind of fades into the water, it's really cool.

Let there be rain! I'm guessing that the ability to save water information on a map is probably hard-coded into the .EXE.

I was gonna say, somebody needs to make a flood disaster now.
Any idea on when you guys are gonna start analyzing RAM and implementing this feature into savegames?  And is this even possible with our limited understanding of the .SC4 game format?  Yeesh...might be a while yet, folks.

Is it possible? Theoretically. The game must store the formats in ram somehow while its using them, and obviously the lakes would be stored in that format somehow since you can see them

However the decoding and knowledge required to make this happen is way over our heads at the moment. I mean WAY.

Well then, it's OK, I do realize you're not the ones who designed the game, and you have other things to do in your lives (unlike me 2.gif).  I'll sit and wait...waiting...waiting...still waiting...I betcha Maxis left this in so we could get a little taste of the next expansion.  I also bet EA wanted them to have no weather elements in Rush Hour, so they didn't, but they left the ability there, so they can claim it was us who fouled up the plan.  And it's a good plan, too.
