peelersan5.jpg

A building i walk past several times a week, i can make this the second upload for my Portsmouth Modern Living Set (as that is what it is in real life anyway). Unlike upload 1, based on the Gunwharf Quays apartments, this one is a real apartment block up in Cosham by the name of 'Peelers Gate'. I always think of potato peelers when i walk past this in real life and see the Peelers Gate sign.... (which i shall include on the model)

I had a shot at creating a fairly similar, but not an exact replica, of Battersea power station.

heres where i've got to.

I also, began adding a roof, which I pretty much improvised, as it has been removed from the real building.

Blast From the Past!

Here is my new old project. Some may recognize Beijing Silver Tower – my first BAT I’ve started about 1,5 years ago. It never got finished mostly due to the fact that at that point in time I didn’t know how to deal with materials and lighting etc…

I always meant to come back to my earlier projects. Today when I was making inventory of sorts I realized that this one is gone! Somehow sometimes I’ve just deleted the files! I felt so sad… It was my first baby, so to say… So, I’ve decided to rebuild it from scratch! And here is a day worth of love labour:

oh man, now that is just beautiful! 44.gif

Sim Shady: I don't think it's modelling that takes the longest (although quite tedious), or at least for me, the longest part is trying to figure out what you're trying to do... ie if it's a real building finding adequate pictures, etc.

yeah... most time consuming process is to figure out sizes and proportions, that's why when you do something again, even from the scratch it is much faster. Like with this Silver Tower, although no files (I mean model files) have survived 2 upgrades and 4 OS reinstallations, I still have all the picture (not too many and not showing all I need) plus I remember that basic proportional rhythm I've deduced first time around, what I was making it the first time around. And of course, experience plays big fat role. Knowing what tool to use for what task, how to avoid unnecessary and sloppy work. Another big thing is a sense of how things work together both from stylistic and practical/structural point of view. So even if you don't have this or that part on pictures, you can still with reasonable degree of accuracy decipher what is going on in those spots.  Like, for instance, here I didn’t have any real numbers to go along with. I remember first time doing a lot of calculations. Unfortunately none of those survived either. All I remember is just a height of regular floor of 3,5m I’ve decided on. So now I didn’t really do any calculations, I just took that number as a single bit. And sort of start dancing with it. As a result in the end building turned out within a 35 cm of real height (that is out of 145m in total). That again shows how strong force are the proportions in architecture. Nothing in a building is of accidental size.
Also at the moment it's just a mass. Now I have to decide what materials will go where and do mapping etc. And this will be genuinely new work as I would have no help from the times i was doing it first time around.

@ Simfox

Perhaps you should finish this one and upload it straightaway. That way it can not get lost or deleted by accident anymore.

That boat is absolutely amazing!  You must keep us updated, it'd be really cool if you could mod it to replace the original Maxis one but a static landmark would look awesome too!

I've been (unfortunately) crunched on time lately, however, I finally have 3DSMax now!  So, soon there will be more progress being done.  And yes, those are statues holding up the upper levels!  This is such an exciting BAT for me.  Have a great day, everybody.

@Mr Glamazon: that's crazy!  Heh heh... looks like the gmax lighting rig isn't compatible with your bat...

here's what I came up with... (not done, and probably it's never going to be finished just like the rest of my projects... 15.gif)

(this looks so dark because I messed up the floor textures... they're black as well)

Damn Glenni, where do you get your textures from, if you make them, how, I'd really like to know.

In relation to this, I was wondering why there are so few (if any) texture creation Tutorials. I would think texturing is what separates the good BATs from the great and the people who love BATting to those who find it extremely hard. Many people(I would imagine), including me, gave up on BATting, because its so hard to create realistic-looking textures. Remember, Modeling is the easy part to learn, texturing is the hard part.

Please make some texture-creation Tutorials.

Thanks!
