About This File

DgVoodoo 2 - SimCity 4 Edition

This package allows a quick installation of DgVoodoo 2 for SimCity 4 and its configuration. It also offers solutions on how to solve possible compatibility problems with DgVoodoo 2 and SC4 with modern CPUs.

This version of DgVoodoo has already been configured for maximum performance from the game but we still recommend that you edit "Adapter(s) to use / enable" to include your primary GPU

Before installing DgVoodoo 2 "SC4 Version" you must make sure that the 4GB Patch is applied as it is essential for the corect operation of DgVoodoo 2.

Generally the 4GB Patch is included in NAM 40 or later versions and CAM 2.5 or later versions but in the case the 4GB Patch was included in this package.

INSTALLATION

1) Copy the contents of the SimCity 4 folder inside the SimCity 4 installation folder and overwrite the indicated files during the transfer step
2) Go inside the APPS folder and drag SimCity4.exe to 4gb_patch.exe to apply the 4 GB patch.
3) Depending on your GPU you need to follow the Fixes given in the other text files in the package.
3a) If you have Intel GPUs then you need to follow the procedures indicated on Intel GPU Fix.txt.
3b) If you have AMD GPU then you need to follow the procedures indicated on AMD GPU Fix.txt
3c) If you have NVIDIA GPU then you need to follow the procedures given on NVIDIA GPU Fix.txt
4) Configuration completed

CREDITS

Thanks to the original creator DgVoodoo 2 (dege-diosg) for developing a wrapper that converts old DirectX calls to DirectX 9/11/12 calls. You can find his work here

https://github.com/dege-diosg/dgVoodoo2

Thanks to RSC204 / MGB who provided specially modified versions of the Graphics Rules.sgr and Video Cards.sgr files of SimCity 4, which ensure DgVoodoo runs optimally.

Thanks to the creator of the 4GB Patch for developing the tool that allows SimCity 4 to use 4GB of RAM instead of 2GB of RAM.

Thanks to jdenm8 for posting a solution to improve SimCity 4 compatibility on AMD video cards.

I think that maybe there is a mistake related to Intel GPU fix indications:

3a) If you have Nvidia GPUs then you need to follow the procedures indicated on Intel GPU Fix.txt.
3b) If you have AMD GPU then you need to follow the procedures indicated on AMD GPU Fix.txt
3c) If you have NVIDIA GPU then you need to follow the procedures given on NVIDIA GPU Fix.txt

Isn't it?

Sorry but is there any way to change resolution? i followed the instruction and the game is working fine but my laptop's resolution is 2880*1800, so size of UI is literally unplayable and i want to set resolution 1440*900. but everything i tried were failed including adding shortcut arguments, changing dgVoodoo resolution setting.

To change the resolution you don't have to do it on dgvoodoo but you have to install this mod to do it

Also I recommend you to follow this guide on configuring SC4

Thank you for answering but its WindowWidth resolution settings only seems to affect windowed mode. so it makes just same tiny ui size with smaller game screen which is the worse. sorry for asking but is there any way to do this in fullscreen or at least borderless mode?

If you read the SC4GraphicsOptions mod you have to configure the mod for you to want to select the desired effect.  If you want to play FullScreen or BorderlessFullScreen or Borderless then you have to change the WindowMode parameter to have the desired resolution

Sorry..but I don't get it. Mod's readme is saying "WindowWidth/Height: This is ignored for the full screen and borderless full screen modes." is there anything I missed?

No, there is not. If you want to run the game at less than your display's resolution, you have to use windowed mode. SC4 doesn't support resolution scaling like many newer games do.

I've been trying desperately to get SC4 to run on my new Windows 11 PC, to no avail. I am attempting to setup DGVodoo2, but I keep getting an error when I try to extract the files from the zip file. It's beyond ridiculous, I'm so frustrated. I don't see anyone else having trouble with the zip, which makes me feel like I'm doing something stupid. Am I stupid?

The problem is with the zip file, it is using a non-standard compression format that Windows doesn't support. As a workaround, you can use 7-zip to decompress the zip file.

The download was just updated to a standardised ZIP file that Windows can handle. So this should no longer be an issue.

Thank you all, I should have figured that out myself. I'm now able to run the game, but I need to attempt to resolve the severe lag.

I've just ran through the install process a few times and to be honest, I'm not sure whether it's working or not. I've tried testing it by enabling the dgvoodoo watermark but it doesn't show. Nor do the 3Dfx Watermark or the 3Dfx Splash screen.

I followed the install instructions as closely as I could, aside from skipping step 2 (as I've already installed NAM and patched the SimCity4.exe). I wasn't able to do step 3 at all though as I'm not Linux, which doesn't have Nvidia Control Panel. Am I understanding step 3 correctly though, in that it only applies to laptop users / people with integrated and discreet graphics? If that's the case, might I humbly suggest that the .txt files be reworded to make that a bit less ambiguous?

The thing is though, the watermark might not be showing up but I think it's working though... I set my resolution to 5120x1440 using the SC4 Graphics Options DLL method, and it works. Surely that means DgVoodoo is working? I think the game feels smoother too but I can't say for certain as I haven't done anything besides moving around a blank region and loading city tiles.

Still, the lack of that watermark is puzzling.

Hi, is there a reason I should use Dgvoodoo2 if the game seems to be running ok?  Does it help with game slowdown when the population starts to get high?  Does it somehow make the graphics look better?  I have an AMD Radeon HD 8570 card with 1gb vram, with an I7 and 32GB memory.  Thanks.

Yes in that SimCity 4 uses DirectX 7 which is a very old DirectX version that is no longer supported by modern GPUs. Because of this the game will run poorly on the graphics compartment as well as not supporting modern resolutions.

DgVoodoo and any wrapper allows you to convert DirectX 7 calls to DirectX 11 calls which allows the game to natively use modern GPUs in addition to increasing the performance and stability of the game in addition to running the game at higher resolutions also by doing this you can use generic post-processing injectors like Reshade which improve the visual quality of the game

Hey! new here, and I'm following the performance section of the Ultimate Guide.

Going through the list and my performance is fine, until I install this. Suddenly my FPS degrades from around 120FPS to less than 10FPS, just sitting around on the main Timbuktu region. Am I doing something wrong? I've installed it to the letter and haven't adjusted any settings of the DgVoodoo install itself.

This is out of my league, but I recall this post which might help. There is a linky there to a DLL by @CasperVg which sounds like it will fix the FPS trouble.

Installed this along with the rest of the mods in the performance guide but no look. Seems the culprit is specifically DgVoodoo 2? I uninstall it and FPS is perfectly fine, having no issues getting over 100 FPS. unless I zoom in, of course.

Well, phooey. I'm like Annie Oakley for this and that was my single shot idea. *

We'll have to wait for the experts. In the meantime: Welcome to Simtropolis. *:)

You may find that dgVoodoo2 simply doesn't play nice with your hardware, many other wrappers exist. But you should ask yourself if you really need one?, because adding a wrapper complicates things. So if your system plays just fine without one, then you may be better off without it entirely.

Unfortunately I get graphical issues without the wrapper. I'll have to get screenshots later but transparency and cars just end up looking like they are covered by stripes.

First make sure to update the GPU drivers, and then depending on the type of the GPU you have to make some additional settings. If in case you have an AMD GPU then you have to do this procedure

Yep, my GPU drivers are updated. I am on a laptop and have an NVIDIA GPU, and have followed the relevant instructions for both cases.

I have attempted to use DXWrapper as suggested in the above redditpost, but either I'm doing something wrong or its nonfunctional, because it doesn't seem to solve any of the graphical issues caused by having no wrapper at all.

The below screenshots occur both with no wrapper and when using DXWrapper:

SimCity_4_FBm1vYUU4P.jpg.17d674ef4b8c2ecd4e45b82604703533.jpg

I also have further issues, I'm not sure if these are solvable with a wrapper or not:
- I can't lock the FPS, at least not with RTSS
- Zooming in massively decreases my FPS

Since you have a laptop with Nvidia GPU you need to do this procedure.

1 Download Dgvoodoo2 from STEX.
2 Remove any trace of the installed wrappers.
3 Copy the download files to the right locations
4 Login to the NVIDIA control panel and force GPU use for both dgvoodoo2 and SC4
5 Login to the Dgvoodoo2 control panel with admin permissions and in the GPU section you need to enter the NVIDIA GPU. Save and see if it works

Agh, still no luck unfortunately. Running DgVoodoo2CpL.exe on admin hadn't crossed my mind, but seems to have made no difference.
If it helps, here's all the settings of the GUI. Only change made is to the used adapter as requested.
