WIENER RIESENRAD
Viennese Giant Wheel
By Sir Roland
The Viennese Giant Wheel is located in the Wiener Wurstelprater in the 2nd district. It was one of the earliest Giant Wheels in the world and for some years the highest one too. 1897 it was established to celebrate the Golden Jubilee of Emperor Franz Josef I. During World War II it was damaged and after the war structural engineers mean, that 15 gondolas should be enough (before there were 30 of them). Today we know that it is no problem to put 30 gondolas on the Viennese Giant Wheel, but now it is a symbol for the rebuilding after the Second World War. You find the Riesenrad in many films, for example in “James Bond The Living Daylights” and “The Third Man”.
It is 64.75 meters high and it weighs more than 350 tons. For a complete rotation the Viennese Giant Wheel only needs 255 seconds, but normally it is slower, so you have enough time to have a great view over the city.
