About This File
129, 134, and 140 Eldridge Street, Bowery, Manhattan, New York, New York, United States
Welcome to Bowery, just about the closest thing New York City ever had to a red-light district. Coming from bouwerij, Dutch for farm, it quickly gained a new purpose as a home for taverns, inadequate housing, and other unholy establishments. Even George Washington had a drink here in 1783 before going to see the departure of British troops following the American Revolution. By the 1860s, Bowery had lost much of its respectability. Church missions and dive bars were competing to control the mindset the neighborhood. Gangs such as the Bowery Boys were looting. The Great Depression brought poverty, and up until the 1970s, Bowery was known as New York's "Skid Row" (not a compliment). However, since the 1990s, things have gotten better. Bars have been torn down and luxury apartments put in their place. The Bowery Ballroom, an upscale music venue, opened in 1997. Yet, the wealth gap continues to grow between the "Bowery bums" and the developers taking advantage of gentrification on cheap land. It's safe to say this neighborhood is uncertain about its future.

*Note that there are two subfolders, one for growables and one for ploppables. Feel free to delete either one, as long as you don't delete both, because that would be absolutely pointless. You can also select specific sub-sub-folders to delete if you don't like a specific building.
