True. But I can't think of anywhere I'd like to make like that. Most UK places would not be easy to make either.

Sounds awesome. Also your avatar looks familiar, so either you've made mods I've looked at or I've seen you around years ago when I first joined. Look forward to it. I've not played SC4 in ages but had the sudden urge to do so recently, so I'll need to install it on my laptop and download a load of mods etc. I just hope my laptop will cope. It does have 4GB of RAM, Win7 64 bit and i5 4 CPU 2.5GHz Processor, but then again, New York is huge. Oh and how did you get the roads and street layout exact? And what about transit, water and power?

Just a few questions. For recreating cities accurately, how would you model Water Pipes and Subways. I imagine that Subways would be modelled accurately whereas Water Pipes would be less of a concern perhaps, and any arrangement would work. However, how exactly do you ensure buildings have adequate power and water? Also, I've been doing a bit of research. Were I to create a New York, I'd use the map made by Izidor44, as it's large, very accurate, the most recent (I think), and covers most if not all the area I need. Furthermore, I think if I've done this right, there's an area that seems to represent a rectangle in the exact size of the UN Headquarters, meaning I'd have a sufficient reference point to start building from there. Though another thing is Central Park. Whilst simply marking the area out with roads would not be too difficult, actually recreating it exactly would be extremely difficult. And finally, I think the hardest and perhaps most important part is simply to accurately recreate the street plan. Once that's done, that's a huge milestone and means more reference frames for buildings, (ploppable buildings with jobs are going to be incredibly useful for this)! One last thing. I've never visited New York, so I think that could be a major handicap. That said, there should be enough information on the Internet to make a good model of it.

Hmm. Any ideas as to a real world area that would be easier, if not easy, to replicate? And I would mean exactly, or as close as exact as possible. As it happens, the areas I'd like to see recreated to this standard are Manchester, London, or New York (likely more but those are the first 3 I can think of). Of those three, Manchester would be my favourite since it's my home town. London would be very rewarding to recreate, but I feel would possibly be the hardest. New York would be great to make as well, but again it'd be hard. This is why any feedback or advice would be greatly appreciated.

Greater Manchester - A new beginning...
TheBonobo4 replied to poshbakerloo's topic in SC4 City Journals
I'm in England using Google Chrome. And it's not just this site, it's a few others as well. But it was fine yesterday and I haven't changed anything. When I quote posts I can see images though. How strange. -

Something's not right. Everyone's avatars have disappeared, the profile system (where it says TheBonobo4 and post count etc) for everyone has changed, and none of poshbakerloo's images are showing. -
Nice start. It'll be interesting to see how this turns out.

I'm not sure but I think we've been fooled. It may be a spambot. Firstly, he hasn't logged in since posting this to check for a reply, secondly, his username sounds too "human", as though a bot is trying to be human. Probably wrong but I have my doubts. I've seen too many bots in the past.

Greater Manchester - A new beginning...
TheBonobo4 replied to poshbakerloo's topic in SC4 City Journals
Just downloaded them now. Haven't used them yet but they look great in the screenshots! These will cmome in useful in building Manchester since it has a lot of parks/golf courses, with random holes and green areas and lakes. -
If you installed rapid growth mods it's possible that the RCI demand is stuck at 0. You'll need to delete the relevant files to ensure demand goes above 0. It happened to me when I installed a demand mod, deleted the files and it worked. Should be a folder called Suppress, delete it and it should work.

Clayton Vale looks fantastic, how'd you do that? Is it some kind of park mod or pre-made lot? I'm guessing it took a while to build the road around it. Manchester has a few of those oddly shaped parks. -

I imagine areas like Moss Side, Hulme, and Levenshulme would be easy to replicate, since it's mostly terraces and railways. But the canals would be near impossible, as would the suburbs with the crazy road layouts and endless greenery. You said any English city would be impossible to replicate, but I reckon we could easily extend that list to any non-American city. -

Looks good so far. And yeah, Manchester would be nearly impossible to replicate, but I can try right? The largely terraced areas such as Moss Side where the roads are straight and at right angles would be fairly easy, it's the city centre and docks that would be difficult. As an aside, I realise your using the cul-de-sac mod. Do you know how to get 1x1 houses to go diagonally round the road, rather than just 3, left right and centre? If that makes sense. -

Looking forward to the next update. And yeah, a realistic replica of Manchester would be epic. As I said earlier, I plan on attempting it sometime next year, but I look at Manchester on Google maps and I realise how hard it actually would be, with all the cul-de-sacs and curved roads, not to mention the railway networks and elevated rails/viaducts and so on. Plus this map is huge. Warrington to the Pennines, Bury/Rochdale to Northwhich. And you'd need hundreds of mods, like Network Addon Mods, Darker nights, realistic water, and tons of BATs like the Cathedral and Town Hall, Printworks, Library, Museums, Schools, many of which haven't yet been made. -

Greater Manchester - A new beginning...
TheBonobo4 replied to poshbakerloo's topic in SC4 City Journals
I've downloaded CIS Tower, New Century Hall, City Tower and 82 King Street. Like I said if we got the Town Hall and Cathedral I'd be really happy. I made a request in the BAT request thread, but I'm not sure how often BAT members look at it or even how much chance there is of getting my requests made. I made those requests in the BAT request thread but that was nearly a month ago and they've got largely ignored it seems. I'm no BATter, I don't even have the BAT. So I won't make it anytime soon. -

I'm aware of the UK BATs, I've got a lot of them and I love them, especially the terraced houses. Just a shame they aren't ploppable and functional, it'd make building cities much easier. All I mean is that there aren't many landmarks for Manchester, like the town hall, cathedral, Piccadilly station, Victoria station, print works Trafford centre. They're all missing at the moment. -

TheBonobo4 replied to poshbakerloo's topic in SC4 City Journals
I was thinking, in the Summer next year when I have lots of free time ofmaking a replica of Manchester, since it's my home town. It'll be really hard to do though since there aren't many Manchester or even UK based BATs, plus many roads and houses. But it'll be worth it I reckon. Does anyone here know how long, or rather the chance of getting a BAT made if it's requested in the BAT request thread? How often is it actually someone makes a near enough exact replica of a complete city like NY, Chicago, London or Manchester? Not very often I assume. There's a guy on YouTube who made part of Chicago, but he's the only guy I know of who's done anything like this. Shame, I'd love to see more replicas. -

Is this accurate? As in are you building it exactly like Manchester is, road by road etc? Or is it custom cities but with real names and terrain? -
Hey Izidor I don't know if you got my message about Manchester or not. If not then I'm requesting that you please make it as specified, just so I can have a comparison. Not that I'm not pleased with drunkapple's work, just I'm not sure if it's to scale or too large/small. Plus it's nice to have a comparison.

Hello all BAT makers of the SC4 community! Manchester Town Hall and Manchester Cathedral Since my home town is Manchester, England, and I one day plan on building the city accurately house for house, road for road (a huge project as I'm sure you can imagine), it would benefit me (and hopefully) the community greatly if you could make a BAT of both Manchester Cathedral and Manchester Town Hall. So far, neither of these have been made as Landmarks, which I feel is a shame as these are beautiful Gothic buildings and we also need more Mancunian landmarks. If possible when making these, can you also include the surrounding areas of the buildings, not just the building itself. Below are some links to images and information of both. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Manchester_Town_Hall http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Manchester_Cathedral I hope someone responds soon, and thanks in advance.
