*waves to rpv173 from Hackettstown NJ* *knocks on the door of nexis who apparently lives in the same township!* there is such a dicotomy of cities in New Jersey, from the picturesque to the filthy-mundane. I love driving through places like Olewick, Whitehouse Station, Princeton, Mendham, Chester... etc. because they're really neat little towns. On the other, I share your frustration in seeing many of our other small cities decay. Of course, relative income of city residents has something to do with it, but even still, that doesn't account for the complete neglet of our urban centers. The status quo is not working.

Looks like a highway to me! Believe it or not though, there are many americans who are jealous of your mass transit networks. Not everyone thinks highways are amazing achievements, especially when you consider that most of them are not as clean as the picture of the one you posted. Most are old and crumbling because they weren't well made. On top of that, because the US interstate network is so huge it's also very expensive and difficult to maintain. Most highways especially ones in cities are ugly, congested, noisy and take up a lot of space (sometimes more than they need to). I have never understood why in many rural areas (like in Michigan, where I'm from) the medians are so incredibly wide. Seems like an awful waste of space. Bottom Line: highways are convenient and nice to have sometimes... but HIGHLY OVERRATED.

As someone not easily impressed but the stuff on here, I have found the vast majority of city journals un-impressive and bland, not for lack of effort they are often good attempts by beginners. But in my opinion, your work far outstrips even the better of them. I am wowed by your scrupples/attention to detail and admire your methods for creating a sense of accuracy/realism. I believe you are one of a very few shining examples of people who taken the game and made it a work of art. I applaud this marvolous attempt and hope that someday you might present with another... say perhaps Calgary? Excellent Work and keep on truckin'

I share our topic starter's facination with commuter rail. Having recently relocated from Kalamzoo, Mi to Hackettstown, Nj, i must say that New Jersey transit is like a wet dream for me and Penn Station in New York is like a giant orgy. Commuter rail is indescribably cool... perhaps moreso than subways even. But i must also echo marryescher's longing for commuter rail in Michigan. I even went as far as to plan a commuter rail system for detroit myself after studying right of ways, but alas, i am not yet an urban planner nor mayor of detroit. Of course it's important to note that my plan involves the removal of the lodge freeway south of I-94, using the remaining right of way to extend commuter rail into downtown detroit and building the transit hub where Wayne County Commuter College is currently (an area bounded by Fort, Jefferies, 6th street and the Lodge Freeway--expensive eh?) Even with commuter rail in Detroit though, there is no comparison to the Northeast. I recently took commuter rail from Dover, Nj (north central) all the way to downton philadelhpia completely by train and for about $15. The same trip from Penn Station to Downtown Phila wouldn't have put be further away (at 30th street staion) and would have set me back a minimum of $50 on Amtrak! kudos for commuter rail. Boston's system is nice as well... 15 minutes from Wincester to North Station (fleet center).

One of my favorite stations is Union Station in DC Not only is is architecturally stunning both inside and out... But it is also well planned and well used. It doubles as a destination/shopping center with an extensive food court.

DANGER: EXTREMELY Lengthy Rant!! I have to say I have mixed feelings when it comes to highways as I would guess many people do. When I was young, I used to love freeways. I loved the way they looked on maps. I loved the concept, the simplicity and the raw power they evoked

Post Modernism (clean glass structures with geometric edges and reflective surfaces many examples of which can be found in cities like Tokyo and Osaka, but also Italian Revival like in Providence). 19 Century American (3-4 story buildings found along main streets in town across America but especially in the midwest and northeast, also ornate, tall comercial skyscrapers and hotels from that time period... looks really good revitalized/redeveloped) Art Deco Interiors Classical Architecture (found in places like Athens, Rome, London and especially Paris with limestone and marble decorated finishes and columns). Neo Classical Architecutre (especially as found in Washington DC) Beaux Arts and Decorative Industrial (French Beaux Arts and Early 20th Century American Industrial with lots and lots of geometric curves and rivets) Colonial American (as found in Boston and Philadelphia) Suburban Cookie Cutter Residential (they're killing our cities but they look Damn Good) Matching European Rooftops (found along the mediteranian) University Gothic (as well as other old school Univerisity Buildings) Most Stuff by Albert Kahn Clean Geometric Glass/Stainless Steel, Clean Quality Brick and Cast Iron Himeji Castle (as seen below) Stuff with lots of Greenery/Natural Areas I DON'T like... Brutalism Modernism Just about anything built in the late 50s, 60s, 70s, or 80s Most Urban Renewal Anything designed by Le Corbusier The Renaisance Center (Detroit) Concrete, Stainless Steel with strange Curves Massive Super Highways that lack Greenery of Any Kind Too much of the Color Grey or BlackThat pretty much sums it up. When I become an architect/urban planner, i will promote, design and build the stuff in the first list (or revivals therof) and do everything in my power to destroy and demolish everything in the second list.

There was a discussion on the forums once on how to end a Cj gracefully and as I had indicated earlier, this is a mini-city journal so I wasn't intending on making any more entries.... I guess I forgot something... ~THE END~ Besides you've seen most of what there is to see. I would like to make a Kalamazoo (my home town) City Journal someday though...
