Interesting article about whether we "own" our games: http://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2012/02/01/thought-do-we-own-our-steam-games/
-
That's right. You are only renting your DLC from EA and when they decide to close their servers, your DLC becomes useless. This is one of the reasons why people are protesting online-only games like SimCity 2013.

I've never tried this, but wouldn't some of the cap relief mods help in this situation?

would you be willing to spend $200 on a future COMPLETE Simcity?
Mootilda replied to elektrichead22's topic in Gaming Talk
Yes, I believe that I would be willing to pay $200 for a game that works well and that I can enjoy for a decade. -

Must you be a U.S. citizen to sign this petition? -
Ideias for region system for new citybuilding game
Mootilda replied to rsoares's topic in City-Building Games
I must admit that I don't understand why you would want to start working on a new SimCity clone, when there are at least two active projects currently being discussed on this site. Surely we're more likely to get a good game if everyone with programming skills would combine their efforts on one game. -
If you don't play SC2013 Would you if it had single player?
Mootilda replied to Mr Saturn64's topic in SimCity (2013) General Discussion
Yes, I would have bought the game if it did not require online. As to whether I would have wanted to play it after a week or so... impossible to tell since I've never played the game. -
To write a game from scratch, you'll often need math and physics (depending upon the game). Even something as simple as Angry Birds requires math and physics. Words with Friends probably doesn't. If you want to do anything that involves rendering or animation, you'll need vector and matrix math.

A thread for the discussion of a independent project to make 'Simcity 5'
Mootilda replied to Mark Waybill's topic in City-Building Games
Isn't this making a huge assumption that we actually know how to produce a realistic environmental simulation? As far as I know, human beings don't have enough knowledge to do this. -
Discussion about Always-On Connection to Origin
Mootilda replied to neurokirurgi's topic in SimCity (2013) General Discussion
EA could allow people to sell their mods via Origin, with EA taking a portion of every sale. As long as EA can restrict mods so that they have to be downloaded from EA, this would allow community modding while ensuring that EA makes money from allowing modding. -

Mootilda replied to neurokirurgi's topic in SimCity (2013) General Discussion
None of EA's attempts at preventing piracy actually succeeded. That didn't stop them from forcing SecuROM down our throats, and it won't stop them from trying to force us to use Origin. -

That's a horrible petition. How can anyone take it seriously with multiple asterisks and question marks, missing spaces, words in all caps, misspelled words, etc.? I'd be much more likely to sign if it didn't sound like the author was foaming at the mouth. -
Do you think we will see a sequel to SC13'?
Mootilda replied to Zombeast's topic in SimCity (2013) General Discussion
If EA brings the servers down, you won't have half of a game, you'll have no game at all. -
Discussion about Always-On Connection to Origin
Mootilda replied to neurokirurgi's topic in SimCity (2013) General Discussion
Because EA doesn't want you to play offline. If EA wanted you to be able to play offline, then they would include that as an option. -

It actually seems kind of silly to take the conversation to PM when every single person reading this thread wants to read the answers. -

Why would they make it easy to continue to play SimCity (Reboot), when they will want us to buy SimCity (Reboot) 2? -
config.bmp, What causes it to get deleted after some time?

No. It's not normal. In fact, you seem to be the only one having the problem. -
Discussion about Always-On Connection to Origin
Mootilda replied to neurokirurgi's topic in SimCity (2013) General Discussion
EA wants all of their game on Origin so that they get the entire profit from the game. They are not actively hostile to the players. They just want as much of our money as they can get. -
Discussion about City Tile Size
Mootilda replied to alex macnamara's topic in SimCity (2013) General Discussion
You don't build an airport. You get it as a regional reward for playing the way that EA wants you to. It's placed in the region outside of any city.- 1,284 Replies

It really sounds like you might be running into the "eternal commuter loop". Search this site to understand the problem and how to design your cities to avoid it.

We've heard that the water tables will be refilled by rain, so rain would appear to be a given.

What about idling regions, server confidence, and city ownership/offensive material
Mootilda replied to baertooth's topic in SimCity (2013) General Discussion
EA isn't unique in this. Any time that you sign any agreement created by a company, the agreement is likely to protect the company, but not you. More and more often, these agreements include a clause which says that you can't take the company to court, but must agree to arbitration. Guess who gets to choose the arbitrator? Guess who the arbitrator is going to find in favor of, assuming that they want to keep working? It would be nice to think that we had some control over our own creations. It would be nice to think that EA owed us some minimal number of years of providing servers for the game. But, EA is a company who is going to do whatever they believe helps their bottom line; giving us rights isn't likely to be on their agenda. -
You just have to make all of the intermediate deals, assuming that a deal can only be made if there is an excess of power in each city except the last.
