  1. EA Closing SimCity Social, Sims Social

Interesting article about whether we "own" our games: http://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2012/02/01/thought-do-we-own-our-steam-games/
  2. EA Closing SimCity Social, Sims Social

That's right. You are only renting your DLC from EA and when they decide to close their servers, your DLC becomes useless. This is one of the reasons why people are protesting online-only games like SimCity 2013.
  3. 'Disabling' region mechanics?

I've never tried this, but wouldn't some of the cap relief mods help in this situation?
  4. Yes, I believe that I would be willing to pay $200 for a game that works well and that I can enjoy for a decade.
  5. Must you be a U.S. citizen to sign this petition?
  6. I must admit that I don't understand why you would want to start working on a new SimCity clone, when there are at least two active projects currently being discussed on this site. Surely we're more likely to get a good game if everyone with programming skills would combine their efforts on one game.
  7. Yes, I would have bought the game if it did not require online. As to whether I would have wanted to play it after a week or so... impossible to tell since I've never played the game.
  8. Video games algorithmics

To write a game from scratch, you'll often need math and physics (depending upon the game). Even something as simple as Angry Birds requires math and physics. Words with Friends probably doesn't. If you want to do anything that involves rendering or animation, you'll need vector and matrix math.
  9. Isn't this making a huge assumption that we actually know how to produce a realistic environmental simulation? As far as I know, human beings don't have enough knowledge to do this.
  10. EA could allow people to sell their mods via Origin, with EA taking a portion of every sale. As long as EA can restrict mods so that they have to be downloaded from EA, this would allow community modding while ensuring that EA makes money from allowing modding.
  11. None of EA's attempts at preventing piracy actually succeeded. That didn't stop them from forcing SecuROM down our throats, and it won't stop them from trying to force us to use Origin.
  12. That's a horrible petition. How can anyone take it seriously with multiple asterisks and question marks, missing spaces, words in all caps, misspelled words, etc.? I'd be much more likely to sign if it didn't sound like the author was foaming at the mouth.
  13. If EA brings the servers down, you won't have half of a game, you'll have no game at all.
  14. Because EA doesn't want you to play offline. If EA wanted you to be able to play offline, then they would include that as an option.
  15. It actually seems kind of silly to take the conversation to PM when every single person reading this thread wants to read the answers.
