Give me something cold and nice, something that will really bring down my temper.

 

Hey guys. Umm, I got a really big sticky situation here and I hope I could have some advice. ESSAY ALERT! Ok heres the thing.

 

Recently, the geography department of my school gave the whole Secondary 3 level a project on geography on building a new singapore. The project can be done using powerpoint presentation or any other medium and it will be marked by the 2 geography teachers Mrs Lee and Mr Mark. We are to do the projects in groups and my group had 3 people including me. The project had 2 questions and we only needed to do one.

1.) The first question was called A new singapore and it required us to suggest what we want in a new singapore, create a new landmark, introduce a new industry and reorientating one of the 6 highways singapore has.

 

2.) The second question was called a beautiful singapore and it required people to take 5 pictures of any singapore attraction and to create a model or draw out the pictures and to write out a poem.

 

My group took the first question and I really got excited about the project and though it would be a wonderful idea to use Simcity to do all the graphics to show how the country could turn out if it did this and that. It was all smooth sailing, I managed to use simcity to recreate a really nice singapore and I though the pictures were really good and they were really really nice. I knew we would really get very high marks for this project as the other people just drew the pictures on paper and thats it. Most of the sec 3 level did the second question becaus it was very simple and easy and as the first seemed to require a lot of hard work to them and when I found out abt everyone doing the second question, I knew that the chances of getting highest marks are much higher now. Only 2-3 groups attempted the first question including mine.

 

When I handed in the project, one of the geography teacher that teaches my freind's class came to our group and asked us if the project was original as the simcity pics look to good to be true i reckon. She then went around asking people if the project looked original. The way she talked to us about the project seemed to like VERY sacrastic. She semed to I dunno look down on us because I think she thinks that its impossible for a bunch of Secondary 3 boys to come up with such a good project. She make it look like we just copy and paste the pictures and info that we took from some website and call it our own. Then she said she needed to check out if the presentation was original. She made it look like we are copycats. That was the first bombshell.

 

The second came when we went to ask her about the project again and she say that if you did not do anything wrong, then you shouldnt worry about anything and she gave us that stupid look as if she found out that we're guilty of copying evrything from somewhere. I was thinking in my head like god missy, of course we should worry since you're so doubtful about our project! We worry because of YOU !

 

The third bombshell came today when my friend came and told me that Mrs Lee told him that she's ok with the project but unhappy about it. She then went on to say that her cousin told her that the simcity idea is unoriginal as the buildings are already there and she told us about this just 2 days before the presentation in fron tod the whole school. My friend kept on asking her how can that be unoriginal? He kept on asking her for like 5 TIMES and she IGNORED HIM! He tried to tell her that if usuing the buildings to build the city is unoriginal then what is? and she ignored him again and told him to just go back to your seat and think about the ways to improve the project. My friend went back and then later told her that if he drew the pictures based on the simcity 4 pics will it then be acceptable? Then she said yes. When my friend came to tell me about what she said, I almost broke down. I feel like giving her one big tight slap across her face. That b*tch.  How can drawing out the pictured based on the simcity 4 pics be different? They are still the SAME pictures except that one is drawn and the other isn't and if you compare the 3D screenshots to a picture that is drawn, its very obvious that the 3D screenshot look much much nicer.

 

Then I'm thinking like why does she not like our project so much? She even went all the way into asking her family members if the project was copied from somewhere. I mean like yes the buildings are already there but it took a lot of hard work and time to place them in the correct positions of the lots to make it look nice and organised. How can she do this? As a teacher its totally unethical of her to scrutinise, critisize and look down on a pupil's work. When I came home and told my dad about what Mrs Lee said about my group project. He said that there are many dissapointments in life and this is one of them. Face it. Live with it. That was the last straw and I completely broke down. I at least exprected some support from my father but what I got is just advice telling me to live with it. I'm feeling so down now.

 

What am I gonna do now guys? I really need some advice. Should I just leave and just take the pill and just leave it or should I confront Mrs lee and try to explain to her everything? The presentation is on tuesday and I really want to excel in this project! I am my wits ends here guys! HELP!!! This project really means a lot to me. For once, I thought I could really do well in a project. I always loose out to the girls in class because they have much nicer decorartions.

You seem to be in quite a pickle here DarkAvater (mmmm, pickles).

This is what I would suggest to you:

 

First, try and talk to your teacher after school, just you and her, that way it doesn't seem as if you are trying to bully her with your whole group. I know you said you already tried to talk to her, but give her one more shot before you pull out the big guns. It is important that you ask her during the day if she would be willing to talk to you after school, that way niether of you are feeling any pressure to get to class and no one else is in the room. Talk to her one on one and see what major gripes she has of this project. If she tells you it isn't original, say of course it is. Sure the game is not your creation, but consider SimCity4 your pen and paper. You can't draw and this is how you are conveying your project. Explain to her that it takes time to get things set up, it isn't just a 5 minute thing. If there is a computer in the classroom offer to show her some pictures from the City Journal sight here. Make sure you have some journals in mind before you start, ones that give a nice variety to the landscape. One or two megalopolisis, some mid size cities, and finally some rural ones. In that hopefully you can use some American style cities (Dusktrooper's), some European (Mickebear comes to mind here) and maybe some Asian looking cities, just to get a mix. This shouldn't take long, you aren't trying to supress her with images, you are just showing her that yes, it is a game sold all over the world, but in order for it to look like a new Singapore you have to play with it just to get everything in the right place. The object of this City Journal tour is to show her that the cities don't all look the same. Sure the buildings are there, but not everyone is trying to make a Singapore. Again, this is where you reiterate that SimCity is your pen and paper.

 

If that doesn't work, immediately call a conference with her supervisor. The Principal, Vice Principal, whoever runs the school. If you can't get a meeting with them, make it someone who has more leverage than her. Maybe the head of the department, anyone that you can talk to that can talk to her. Ask to meet with this person with the whole group. Explain your position, the teacher's position, everything that you told us here, tell the higher up. Let them know everything. What the project is, your decision and the rationale. Make it clear this was a fun project (you are not ridiculing the project, just the teacher's view it is unoriginal). Take this person on the tour if you have to. Let them see what can be done with SimCity.

 

It is imperative that you explain you're not quite sure what the teacher finds unoriginal about the project, for she will not give you a straight answer. You and multiple people have talked to her and she does not want to tell you why. Also, let this higher up person know (just drop a hint or two) she has asked other groups about this project and family members. Say something like She finds it unoriginal, and although she has asked some of the other groups and some of her family members about the concept, she cannot tell us why.

 

If you have to give a shortened version of your project to this higher up, so they can see what you did and how you accomplished it. Maybe you will persuade this person that your concept is a good one, that using SimCity is original (how many other groups are using SimCity) and did take time. This was not a 'let the game do the work' type deals. Before the meeting, maybe have a small 'City Journal type photoslide done that you did. This doesn't have to be good, just so they can see how you went from a barren lot of ground to single family houses to med density to highways and skyscrapers. No more than 5-8 pictures. This is just to show how the project developed.

 

Now that is the advice I can give, you want to make sure you are not confrontational about this, you are not trying to bully the teacher into accepting your project, you are instead trying to show her it is original. If you can't do that you are trying to find out the major gripe she has about the game (maybe she doesn't like Will Wright because they had dated. If that is the case then there is nothing you can do about it.) But if it is content based, then maybe you have a shot at convincing her. If you get a straight enough answer from her at the first meeting, then don't have the meeting with the higher up. That is pointless. But if she dodges the question again, do not hesitate to go over her head in an attempt to gain these answers.

 

And this is very important: Do NOT Raise Your Voice. Keep a calm and collected head. You raise your voice and you lose all credibility. If it would help, make a list of what you want to talk about. And stay on that list. Make sure you explain everything. And do not resort to name calling ('Well I heard your cousing is fat' does not help the situation).

 

And to your dad, well tell him to visit this site, tell him to look at this post on the page, and tell him 'Sorry dad, you've been replaced by an anonymous person on the internet' and walk away. That'll teach him.*

 

Hopefully this helps. Maybe you can get a straight answer out of her, maybe you can get her to change her mind about the project, but if nothing else you at least did all you could to understand the situation. It might not work but you aren't wondering, 'I wonder if I had done this it would have worked'. Give this a shot, take two aspirin and call me in the morning.

DIGBY.Lewellan222 has made one of the finest tours of a rural area in SC4.It also has good photo editing used.

 

BOSTALK.I know this seems like a plug for my C.J.,but it is not.My C.J. has much asain and american influences.I also use MS paint and my C.J. will look crappier then your project.

 

NEXIS of GEN.MrBisonm has made this one of the most famous space C.J.'s out there.

 

CASA GRANDE.Rewright has made the most realistic region of the south west US.It has realistic Highway layouts and suburbs.

Maimi.Popewiz has made an absolute copy of Maimi.I'm not sure if his c.J. is called Maimi though.

 

Edmonton:Thejerseydevil73 has made the most famous recreation of any city here at ST.

 

Hong Kong.Jessylong is trying to do more work on this region,but so far has a perfect transit layout.

 

Alright those are my sugestions.

@ vidioman:  Well, by coincidence, our old plates got replaced today.  250 KBL is now AWHA 296.  The AW series appears to be province wide.

All series are province wide, though there are more of some than others in cirtain places. We've got lots of ADXX, AJXX and ARXX plates.  I saw a guy the other day with a vanity plate that said BEER

@dark avatar: Brtm2 has the right of it. As a former teacher myself, I can tell you that it is very difficult to accept a project from a student who is better than you are. In this case your teacher has decided you couldn't to that because she can't.

When my son was in first year univerity, a TA accused him of plagiarism because a paper he turned in had a broader vocabulary than he did. This wound up in front of the course Professor, and the TA was repremanded.

Since you can show how the project was created, I suggest it is time to start climbing the ladder of authority. Stand up for yourself and remember whose money pays the teacher. It belongs to you and your family and other taxpayers in Singapore. I suggest you tell your father that taking things lying down may have been fine for his generation, but this issue involves a lot of work, and you intend to get ahead in this world.

DarkAvater: Sorry I wasn't clear about the City Journal piece. You aren't looking for pictures from City Journals that have lots of flashy photoshopped graphics or a good story line. You aren't gonna have time to allow them to read all the captions to the photos. What you are looking for are decent pictures that show what the game can do. If you take something like Digby (although a great City Journal in the sense of a City Journal) it doesn't do you well in this situation. If something has a lot of extra graphics it detracts from what you are trying to show; especially if you do the same to your project's pictures. You are looking for pictures with very little words on them that show an overview of a city tile. Maybe not some close-ups here, you just want to show them what the simulator is capable of: That, with your input, it can create a variety of cities from rural to megalopolises to another Singapore.

OMG, today was just awful.

It was my last day of classes before moving to Canada. I spent a long time saying good-bye to everyone. We talked about the good times and my Japanese students showered me with presents. I even got my first wedding card today.

I was feeling depressed driving home tonight. Then it happened. Mom stopped by and took my to her house with her earlier in the afternoon. So I walked into my apartment and... no bunnies. I nearly cried...

I don't mean to make this out to be a pity party for me or anything. I should feel excited about starting my new life in Toronto on Monday, but instead I'm just feeling super-depressed right now. Just needed to get it off my chest.

So, nothing with alcohol today. How about a Barqs root beer?

Well, kinda.. We have a new one now (same place name, etc. Run better) It's about 2 miles south of the city (on a bit of land between the lake and Fort William First Nation) called Chippewa, there's a campground, a beach, and a fun fair, and across from all that is a little Wildlife Park (zoo) focusing on animals from Northwestern Ontario. They also have a Polar Bear, with isn't from here but is quite popular. It's just a loop walk around a cage, with some pens for bigger animals around you. They have a skunk, and some chipmunks, so it really isn't anything great. Only two bucks, though. Kids love it.

Just watched the movie version of 'The Odd Couple' (1968, Directed by Gene Saks, play by Niel Simon). I must say I was slightly disapointed by it. I had never seen another version of it, but I had done the play in High School for our drama class. The class activity was for a pair of students to do a selection that she would choose. She picked for me and another, more outgoing, student to play Oscar and Felix just in the scene where they are fighting and Felix is thrown out of the house. I played the part of Felix, he played the part of Oscar. Throughout the movie I kept thinking how we did a better job. I think our version was better because Oscar didn't cry, there was no crying. He got mad, madder and even more mad at me as the scene progressed, but in the movie version Oscar didn't seem to get too mad. I'm glad I saw it, but it wasn't what I had anticipated.

 

And Vid, that isn't a zoo zoo, that's a petting zoo.

@ brtim2: I assume the movie version had Jack Lemon as Felix. I felt that it was played for the average movie goer at the time it was made. You have to make historic period allowances for films as old as this. I am glad you enjoyed playing that role.

@Cjah: Enjoy your latte. C'mon, a petting zoo is one where you can get in the enclosure and pet the animals. Haven't you ever read Albert and the Lion?

@ The Terminator: ADHD? How can you go off your medication? Are there not serious effects? Many mood altering drugs can cause physical problems when you go off them suddenly.
