My name is Craig.  My wife and I live in northwestern New Mexico.   I recently found SimCity 4 on sale at Steam and decided this would be a perfect time in my life to purchase it.  I am 73 years old and have just returned from a stay in the hospital due to a kidney infection.  No fun, but at least it wasn't Covid.  I started playing SimCity in the mid-90's and have just returned to it.  It's going to take a while to fully recuperate and get my strength back so I thought I would use the game as a rehabilitation aid.  What I love to do is download cities and watch them as they evolve.  I've had the game less than a week and have not yet been able to successfully download SC4 cities and install them on my game.  Can someone direct me to a set of instructions?  When I registered and made a donation today, Feb. 23, 2021, I was offered a set of DVD discs.  Since I don't own a DVD player or burning program, I'd like to know if there is another format I can receive this material in, like a CD rom.

I am grateful to have discovered this site and hope I can contribute as time goes on.

I know I've been registered for less than a day in Simtropolis and I know I have a lot to learn BUT I'm finding this site to be very confusing for a this newbie.  Already I've encountered downloads aggregated on DVD discs.  I do not have nor do I particularly want a DVD player.  Then I was asked to log into Discord while trying to enter the chat room.  I do not have a log-in for Discord.  Yeah, right; grumpy old man!

My point is that I came here with a relatively simple request, or so I thought.  Now I feel like I'm jumping through hoops and frankly, I'm confused.  Regarding deleting my email account, I looked back at the settings page and saw that my email address was required.  My feeling is that you're referring to another place (posting) where I left my email address, but I'm uncertain how to get back to it.

Regarding the "relatively simple request" I referred to earlier, all I really want to do is download user-built cities, place them in my SimCity 4 game in the proper directory, and be able to load them once I get in the game.  If possible, I'd like to do the same for SimCity 2013.  Confusion and misunderstanding has ensued.   I feel like I'm in a hall of mirrors (see The Lady from Shanghai for clarification of the effect).  If you can help me delete my errant email address and route me to the place where my three-and-a-half questions will be answered, I'd be eternally grateful

Hehe ...

I've been here like you for a few more years and I still find new thoughts every week. And yes, you are right. Simtropolis has so much information that a newbie can't understand it so quickly.

You have to read, test, read and so on.

And with the downloads ... you can't download an entire city. No way. You have to download it step by step ... read the "Readme" and load dependencies as listed. That's a lot of work colleague, trust me.

And please open your own thread here:

Both of these are very much optional, the discs don't actually have to come on discs anymore, we have an option to download them instead.

Locate the post in question, if you are logged into your ST account, there will be an option "Edit" on your post. For now I've removed it for you :).

There are not many such things around, for years the file-sizes made it unthinkable to host complete regions. Whilst this is considered more favourably, it's not something you commonly see getting uploaded. Then there is the biggest problem, if someone has been using Custom Content, you need an exact copy of that, in order to open cities made using such. If not, you'll end up with a lot of problems, mainly Brown Boxes and missing models everywhere. The rules of the community have always expressly forbidden the re-distribution of such Plugins folders.

In short, if you can find such a reason and it was built without Custom Content, you can download and use it. If it was built with Custom Content, you'll need to install all the dependencies to use the region, honestly I really don't know of one example of such an upload off the top of my head.

Do you like custom textures, but don't like all the work involved creating them?, take a look at the Texture Automation options here. Change the look and feel of your transit networks, with the minimum of effort, for example customised versions of my Sidewalk NAM (SWN) and Terrain Grass NAM (TGN) mods, and much more besides.

New to the NAM? Check out my tutorials on YouTube. Latest upload: How to: RHW - MHO Roundabout Interchanges. (Nov 25).

Hi @Craig Corwin and welcome to Simtropolis. *:)

Firstly it can be overwhelming to learn and discover SC4 to begin with, but you're not on your own. There are so many intricacies to the game, and it does take a while to grasp what needs to be done for the customisation side of things. The community exists to help and guide people like yourself.

We appreciate your generous donation. There is another method indeed in the form of a digital download (in ISO form). This is known as a "virtual disc" and then one would use a program to mount it as a drive on your computer. Then it can be accessed the same way a disc would do normally.

If this sounds interesting, please send us a PM and we'll provide you the download links.

The chat room uses Discord for the platform, and so I'm afraid there is no other way to access it unless having a Discord account.

They are quite rare to find given the large download size and issues with compatibility (due to custom content people use in their cities).

But two prebuilt regions which come to mind are:

To install one of these:

  1. Download the zip file.
  2. Copy (extract) the contents into your Documents\SimCity 4\Regions folder.

  3. This means there is then a new folder inside your Regions which the game will load.
For example with the Maxisland region:
    Documents\SimCity 4\Regions\Maxisland

  4. Access this region from the "Load Region" button:

    Load Region Button.png

  5. The region will then appear in view, and you can enter a city tile of your choice.

Hopefully someone might know what to suggest for those missing files. As Cori said, we can see if anyone knows what to reply about from your CFI post. Also feel free to open a new topic if that might be worth asking anything else, and there are many helpful people here who'll be able to assist you on your mayoral adventure.

Hey there! I'm a long time sc4 player. I started playing city skyline a year ago sharp but it made me miss sc4 a lot. So I'm back and I'm playing with mods (such as NAM) for the fisr time. Having a blast so far with the mods. So I'm looking for other essential mods like this one.

Thanks and have a good one!

Hi @Da_Polux7 and welcome to Simtropolis. *:)

Great choice for returning to SC4 again to resume your mayoral duties. The NAM and custom content side really does expand on the possibilities that the base game provides very much so. Even though Maxis never released another expansion pack, the many talented creators here and at SC4Devotion sure provide plentiful variety indeed.

We hope you enjoy it here too!

Heya Simtropolis! I'm Chloe, nice ta meetcha lol! *

I fell in here because Cities: Skylines wont run on my current laptop, but I needed a city building fix. So I'm migrating back to SimCity 4, cause my 4GB of RAM can handle that lol! I have to say though, as much as I adore Cities: Skylines, theres something about SimCity that it doesnt quite capture: The feeling of working on an actual miniature model of something. I find SimCity 4 so crisp and tiny, it all comes together so perfectly for such a satisfying build. It is chicken soul for my obsessive and compulsive soul.

I'm starting to get used the the NAM today, but am now starting to get a bit over-whelmed trying to find out exactly what I need to get a perfect, giant, dream build started. I'm not sure what the best texture packs are. I keep holding off from downloading any textures to make things look a bit more realistic, because I'm worried I'll fudge it all up. Plus I'm sure there are good download links that package together cellections or some sort of complete overhaul. I find modding so wonderful when it's all done and I can play, but getting started in a new game is always an anxiety fueled nightmare to me, I am scared to death I'm going to spend so much time doing something completely wrong or unnecessary.

Wowza... Thats a bit much. But yeah, thats whats up with me lol

Hi Chloe, welcome to Simtropolis and back to SC4! *:)

I remember that feeling too, and it can be difficult to get started with custom content. The big piece of advice I can give is to try and take it slowly step by step. How the STEX and LEX are libraries with so many different novels to enjoy. Each has the potential to write our own stories in game, and likewise they can be seen as tools that we can use in a broad creative sense. The main thing is you've taken the step to explore SC4 again, and we're all here to help you on your way.

We hope you enjoy it here also, and feel free to post in new and/or existing topics to your heart's content.

There are a few linkys on my About Me page that might be good places to start. I'd especially recommend the Shoppes as those are things you can download, use, and change at will. (With the exception of Tree Controllers. Those can be a bit tricky so maybe stay with Terrain, Water, Beach, and Rock mods to begin with.)

Hello everyone!

I've been a fan of city building games since around SimCity 3000, and I remember coming across Simtropolis around the time of Cities XL, and seeing a huge community who were doing pretty amazing things in SimCity 4.

I've started playing SC4 again and taken a huge interest in it. After installing NAM and other mods, I've been digging into modding in order to understand the game better and to modify it for my purposes. I think there is a lot of room for improving the balance of things like desirability, for example the effects of land value, parks, etc. In my digging I've come across some weird things, including what may be an overlooked bug.

For the sake of helping understand what's going on in the game I've also made a couple of Data View mods that I hope to share as I expect they might be helpful.

As far as actually playing the game, I guess I aim for something between realism and efficient strategy. I whiz around google maps to get a better understanding of how cities and towns are arranged. I've also been inspired by the idea of Transect-based zoning, and I've roughly translated the SmartCode guidelines into a more appropriate SimCity scale.

My current city is slowly growing on a map of Cathlamet, Washington, which is a challenging place for expansion. After a few false starts I've been going slow and trying to think through things before doing any large construction. I want to preserve some rural landscape even when the city starts getting more dense, and I've gotten a lot of inspiration from some of @CorinaMarie's farm-centric regions.

Anyway, I'd like to share some of what I work on, and hopefully some of you enjoy it, as I've enjoyed seeing what others do in these games.

I look forward to talking with you all!

Hi @dylansan and welcome to Simtropolis. *:)

That sure sounds great for delving into the modding aspects, and also a balance between a realistic and functional approach. The brilliant thing is how SC4 provides such a diverse capable platform to express each of our own creativity. Every city is our own puzzle to create and solve the way we wish to.

My avatar is indeed Pluto! Just splashed with some color for the heck of it.

Right now I'm trying to reconcile the massive number of farming jobs created by SPAM with the reduced farming demand dictated by CAM. (I don't have CAM installed per-se but I'm using some of it's exemplars to try and get some better balance... I'm going to spend a lot of time tweaking lots of pieces from lots of mods before I'm happy.)

Hi,

After a very long break from Sc4 and also from Simtropolis i'm back.

Tried to use my old account name "simwario" but since i don't use that mail addy anymore, i had to register for a new account.

I'm almost 41 now, in a long distance relationship for a year, but we are planning moving in together once the covid19 pandemy is finally over.

Currently living in Northern Germany not far away from Hamburg.

I haven't played Sc4 for almost a decade, but a few weeks ago i decided to install the game again, only to find out that the DVD version doesn't run on Windows10.

So i bought myself the Sc4 Deluxe version and with a fast laptop it's even more fun. :-)

Best regards

simwario1

As Cori said, we'll get you sorted with your account recovery no problem. We can switch over your email address also, so you'll be able to login to the old account and set a new password of your choosing (which only you'll know). I'm just posting to get access to the discord to learn how to turn an ortho TLA-3 into a diagonal TLA-3 because just dragging 2 roads for each half of the TLA-3 isn't working. NAM stuff. I download from this site a lot but have never needed to create an account so I haven't til today.

I get this isn't an official SC4 matter bit I figure everyone on this site and the discord uses the NAM.

Hi @babynana

Welcome to the site (even though you mentioned you've been around). If you are trying to get a stretch of diagonal TLA-3, you can plop the starter piece and start to drag an ortho stretch using the road tool. Then drag it diagonally from the end like you would a road. Is that what you're attempting?
