As I mentioned in chat, NAM 35 is the most complete transportation overhaul there is. I don't know if it has what you want, but it's definitely the first place to look. ;)

You should have the NAM installed anyway for a number of reasons, not just roads and highways.  The Traffic Controller alone is worth the download.  If you're looking for what's in the picture you posted above then NAM 35 is where you will find it.  Plenty of tutorials and helpful people around if you have any questions or issues with it but it's pretty simple to install and run.

Uhm. The linky I gave is for the complete download. It's like 260 mb and that's a self extracting thinger. Once unpacked it'll be like 1 gb and you then run the NetworkAddonMod Setup 35.exe file. It is completely offline once you get it. You might want to select Custom Install once you get into it so you can look at all the options it has. It is a wee bit complicated, so feel free to get frustrated at first as you learn it. ;)

Wait for the experts to answer this. However, I'm pretty sure the only thing is that it might replace are various transportation textures. A good idea is to backup your plugins folder before installing new stuff. I am pretty certain it does not affect any buildings nor any terrain-related mods. (I'm not currently using NAM myself, but I did play around with 34 on an otherwise vanilla setup.)

NAM shouldn't replace or remove anything other than previous NAM files but it will replace your Maxis Highways with Real Highways (what you see in the picture you posted) unless you choose not to.   Extract it straight to the plugins folder in SC4 and it should be labeled as z___NAM so it loads up last and doesn't conflict.  If you do download it though, be sure to take your time going through the checklist for what you do and don't want installed at the beginning.  If there is something in the list you don't like or aren't interested in then make sure it's unchecked.  You can always go back and re-install it later if you want it.  Read the readme file carefully so you know what you're getting.  Nothing hidden in it but there are a few things you just need to be aware of before you install it.  The NAM team goes to great lengths to make sure everything you need to know is there but you have to read it to understand it.  It's a must have for anyone who is serious about the game.  It makes so many things so much better.

The NAM installer is only Offline-Based.

The traffic controller is one of the key benefits of the NAM. A basic installation will include that and some fixes.

But the NAM contains so much more, it's a huge mod that's been going over 10 years. As such, I recommended you take your time trying out new features. The highway in your pictures you were looking for is called the Real Highway (RHW) Mod. Actually RHW doesn't replace the default highways, unless you opt to install the Maxis Highway Override (MHO) from the NAM, but that's totally optional.

Perhaps my NAM Tutorials (link in my signature) will be useful to you? It's a series of videos on YouTube to help newcomers become familiar with the new options from installing NAM.

Yes.  If you're unsure about what you want you should choose to not replace your highways or railways just yet.  You can always go back and install the new ones later if you decide to but overall you'll be glad you did, judging by what you're looking for in your first post because they're simply better, period.  It might be a challenge to get used to at first but there are manuals in the download that explain everything and plenty of help online here.   I'm sure one of the NAM gurus will be along soon to add to this thread as they look for stuff like this so keep an eye out for responses.

I just upgraded from NAM 3.1 to NAM 3.5 (late 2012 to autumn 2016). The first thing I noticed was that my highway menu was no longer cluttered with a dozen or so RHW selections -- The basic (formerly vanilla) highway had become the top option. That's a good thing, right? A little voice in my head is hinting that if things have disappeared, then something has gone horribly wrong.

My 2nd note was that my region view showed old highways as black, new highways as red (and RR vice versa). More precisely, newly saved segments show highways as red, while segments saved before the edit show highways as black. Is this just a display thing, or do I need to worry about compatibility issues?

Unless the RHW options are still there, RHW was not installed for some reason.

Again suggests the mod Real Highway Regional Transport View is not installed, which would be the case if RHW was not.

I'd re-run the installer, select a custom install and make sure these features are selected. The later can be found under Additional Features and Customizations / Real Highway Options.

New problem: All of my RR wide-radius curves have vanished. Not only have they disappeared from the build menu, but those I already built are missing from my maps!

Going through my plugins folder, it's a total disaster! The NAM 3.5 install program deleted every last NAM file and then created a bunch of empty folders! There's nothing left! Nothing!

Is there a patch to NAM 3.5 that can install some actual files rather than just empty folders?

See the thing is, when you say this, you are suggesting installing empty folders is the default behaviour. But since you are the only user I've heard from with this issue, I'd say it's more a case of what is going wrong with the NAM 35 installer on your machine.

So no, there is no patch, the installer works for me and many others. In the first instance perhaps you could confirm if re-installing using a custom install worked for you or not. Also, please carefully check the install directory is the intended location. Perhaps the files were previously installed somewhere unexpected?

In the meantime, provided you don't save any cities, these things will come back once your installation problems are resolved.
