Alright, a small intro first, Im Giovanni, some people here may already know me from the CSL workshop from the classic cars and few buildings ive made, ive been lurking around here for quite a while and decided to make an account too since this seems to be quite a good and professional forum, and thus very good for seeking advice.

And thats why i made this topic, i need a little bit of advice for an idea i'm having, basically i want to make a small set of flarestacks for the petroleum industry in cities skylines. now making the models isnt much of a problem. however, i want to give it a flame effect, but the only effects you can give it in the asset editor are white steam clouds or dark grey smoke, im curious if there is a possibility of adding custom effects to buildings that arent in the asset editor. the fire effect from CSL for example, or a custom made flame effect so the stack looks like a real flarestack, and not a smokestack with only grey smoke.

i hope some of you can help me with this, because it would be great to have flarestacks for the oil industry.

with regards, Giovanni E.

Hi and welcome!

There's definately some good advice to be found here (plus little tricks to learn from others WIP). :) I'm wondering if the firecamp from Snowfall could be used here. Flarestacks would be great to have! Or perhaps the fire effect from when buildings go on fire. Not sure how that would be done though. The camp fire is a marker like the smoke, but it might be hidden or only available when you pick snow buildings in the asset editor. Should be reachable through ModTools though.

That's just some quick thoughts from me - some of the modders might know better what's possible. :P Looking forward to seeing what you come up with :D

i took a look at the item you mentioned, it doesnt have a flame effect im looking for, its basically a smoke plume marker and a bright orange light, not what im looking for, but its a great alternative idea for when custom effects are not possible though. still, thanks for your reply !

thanks for this information, could you give an example on what i should look for when using modtools ? all i ever see is enormous amounts of text i cant quite comprehend, i basically only know how to use modtools to dump 3d models and textures of non prop assets. when it comes to scripting and the likes im not the brightest out there :/

No idea sadly. But I remember someone played around with the fire for some volcano/lava assets. Ofc I can't remember who, but someone else on here might know.

Maybe add some other custom prop that you can place in the asset editor. Then when the mod loads it would replace this prop with this effect. Since you already know how to create it ingame.

Awesome! I think you should be able to find it in ModTools in the asset editor too. No idea how it'll behave and if it can be placed like a prop on the building (almost seems too easy :P). Without a doubt a cool find and one step closer to a flare stack :D

Cool! after you do all the grunt work, I'm totally stealing your technique! ;)

Feel free to contribute to the project if you would like, we'll need lots of help I'm sure:

Good work so far, I hope you can make it work in the editor without too many hackish tricks!

You can do just that. Just plop it with mod tools.

thank you for your kind words ! i'm surely happy to contribute to the project, would be nice to keep it into one art style (texture wise) so if you have some good ideas for the textures make sure to let me know :D

another update, Success ! i managed to plop the markers by using modtools on a model. when testing it in game the markers still worked, this means that a flare stack is really possible, i will be working on the model from now on ! :D

I have just used textures from textures.com, redistributing them may be a no-no... PM me your email address and I totally won't sent them to you. ;)

I asked because I missed the diagonal beams (you only have horizontal beams) but with textures it looks a lot better already!

yea, i tried to make it a bit of a building of myself by not adhering to the original style. also made it a bit easier to make for me :P

second one is going to be the guyed supported structure one though, and that one will be much more akin to the one in the picture :)

im now getting the model in game and testing it, it will be a RICO ploppable, just like most of my recent buildings :D

Alright, second one is almost finished, will still need to edit some things on the model that dont seem right, when that is done im going to use @Avanya's pipelines to connect the second silo, i will also use her stairs props to connect the platforms. and i will add the fire marker when done.
