Don't worry, I've got all the time to place those pipes correctly. :D

Those pipes add a lot of detail. I think I may rethink my oil industry district when those hit the workshop. I've got some pictures of real oil industry and I think those pipes will do a lot to help recreate it. Excellent work, which comes as no surprise by now.

Hey Avanya, I was just messing around with some props to create a construction yard, and suddenly thought of something: since you're very much into industrial/utilitarian stuff (and turn everything you touch in pure C:SL gold), could I make a request? I would love to see some props of under construction buildings. Not entire buildings, but smaller pieces, like a 1x1 block of drilled in piles, formwork, concrete pillars and walls on a concrete slab, stuff like that.

    Ty guys! ^^

I'll note your request, but I might not get around to it in a long time. There's always hope someone else will create that sort of bits. :)

Sure, no worries. Would be great if you did, no biggie if you don't :)

I figured I'd share my current WIP. It's pretty far along since I had to see if I could get the textures right to really make it work. I'll be a growable, but I might also release a RICO version which is a bit larger. It's modelled after a rail model factory and all the stuff around it can't fit in 4x4. :P Got some detailing to do, then normal map and a LOD. Shouldn't be too long before it's done and then onto another generic factory! :D

Oh, and for reference here's the model I worked from: 2155_70411.jpg

I love it! Definitely do a scale version though. 4x4 just isn't big enough for most things in real-life scale. Even if the building more or less fits 4x4, the lot around it usually wouldn't unless it's a w2w building.

I'm looking forward to the Unique version. Awesome, as always.

Oh by the way, if you don't want to model the fence yourself, there's a prop on the workshop that I like that looks a lot like the fence in the picture. It's an old prop from the first month or two after release. It's called ograda I believe. It's not exactly like it, but close.

Or if you prefer to make your own, that's perfectly fine as well. Just throwing it out there.

I think I remember seeing that. I usually check if a prop is on the workshop (and is ok quality and tris/texture size) - no need to do extra work if there's something perfectly good on already. :P

Sadly that fence was a very different red compared to my bricks, so I ended up making my own props. My glass factory is now up and comes in a growable and RICO version. Gotta say I'm very happy with the look fo this one - now the next challenge is picking the look for my next generic factory (got lots of reference pics). :D

    Awesome! No surprise there.

I'm looking forward to your next one. And I'm still looking forward to your warehouse-turned-loft apartment/office buildings too, if you're still planning to do those.

Hehe. No worries, I haven't forgotten. ;)  If only I didn't need sleep I could get much more modelling done :P

Anyways. Today I finished another generic factory. A pretty boring one which wasn't that inspiring to make, but it's a nice filler and adds more brick to our industries! (In Denmark most buildings are made of red brick :P ). Not 100% sure if I'm happy with the 2x4 size or if it should be 3x4. Your thoughts are very welcome :)

I like it, a lot! Do you know if it's possible to expand growables sideways (like with expandable backyards, but to the side)? That should settle the 'What width should it have'-issue quite nicely.
And another, perhaps slightly odd/unexpected question: would it also be possible to upload this as a level 1 High Residential building (perhaps minus the smoke plumes)? I think it would look pretty good as a cheap tenement building, as I think it would complement Feindbild's Brooklyn theme very well :)

I know expanding sidewas is something boformer is working on for the larger growables. Atm I don't think we can have them do that. I did play with a rotated version of it (so it can expand), but with the front stairs that just looked odd. :P

Doable: yes. I'd want to do some minor changes to it though. Like the large roll-up doors would have to go and I might "brick up" some of the windows. Shouldn't be too much work and I got a similar request for the glass foundry. I guess I might as well do them as I do the industrial version :P

It's a nice light factory, but I think it kinda misses something. Maybe a courtyard, or fence or something?

Personally, I like them that way, so I'm able to create my own around it. Though I imagine not everyone agrees.

I might do a 3x4 version and move it a little to the side, so I've got about a tile on the side as loading area. I was torn myself between your two suggestions - on one hand I'd like to decorate the area as I go, on the other it felt like it was missing something. So two versions is prob the way to go. :)

That might be the way to go.

The way I do it is I zone or plop one building, then start filling in around it with a loading dock and maybe some train tracks running beside or behind if it seems like it needs it.

I wish your Glass Works (which I love btw) could have retained the train tunnel through the center like in that original version picture. That would have been really cool. Maybe an idea for the future.

3x4 version up. I think I like this one better, though the other one will definately also have its uses.

Originally I was gonna keep the train tunnel, but in the end I cut it to keep the tris down. I also struggled to get it to look right where the two buildings met, so hiding it inside was a nice and easy solution. :P

You know, I just remembered something that I keep thinking is missing from the game, and it's right up your alley, Avanya.

There are fences you see in a lot of industrial areas, and around industrial lots that aren't in a strictly industrial district. It's a tall chain link fence, usually between 8 and 12 feet tall, and covered with a sort of tarp, usually a dirty green or white. Here are some Google Maps coordinates of one kind of like what I'm talking about:

    https://www.google.com/maps/@34.0104728,-118.1898251,3a,75y,183.38h,78.51t/data=!3m6!1e1!3m4!1sc4qJDer3Xgw7-7xjij9d1w!2e0!7i13312!8i6656!6m1!1e1

With or without the barb wire.

Also, here are some ideas for some general industrial warehouse type buildings:

    https://www.google.com/maps/@34.074353,-118.1714367,3a,75y,149.02h,84.94t/data=!3m6!1e1!3m4!1si3JoKipYQLWrbEnw9z1GjQ!2e0!7i13312!8i6656!6m1!1e1

All along that block on that side of the road. Oddly, there are houses just across the street. CS's pollution mechanic needs some work, because if real life were like that, all those people in those houses would drop dead.

They often do right? ...and at a higher rate than other areas, read some Erin Brockovich haha :D

Yeah, C:SL is pretty one-sided on industry: if it exists, it is toxic and will kill you. Would be nice if there were sub-divisions within industry (generic specializations, if you will), with different sets of properties: like, if the sign on the roof says 'Truman's Uranium Emporium' or 'Dow Chemicals', it should destroy any life form within a 10-mile radius, if it says 'Binco Textile Mill' or 'Kraft Dinner Corp.' only a 1-mile radius, and when it says 'Care Bear Toy Factory' or 'HAL 9000 Software Productions', it should have no environmental impact. So to speak....
