I am not sure if I would be violating any rules by posting this here. But given the situation here's what I managed to salvage. This is not from the PLEX but these are file attachments from some threads on SimPEG. With the site gone, these would have been gone forever too.

Paeng is still around, but hang on to those files anyway. You never know when we might need them to restore things.

Sad day, indeed. I would like to express my appreciation for the Pegasus operation and the wonderful content provided to the SC4 community over the years. Their offerings added a great deal of life, depth, and detail to my cities, amateurish as they are. If I could rate the "Fun Value" of this top-quality site, it would be 10 out of 5. Thanks, Pegasus, and may your cities always sit in sunshine. We'll miss you...

...Surprising that there was no off-site backup.  Good business practice pretty much demands this, but web site providers are often shoe-string outfits with inexperienced management....

I think this is the bit I found most surprising, I've lost my site four times now (hosting error, 2 unknowns and a failed software upgrade that took out my entire site) but each time I've been able to restore it from backups ... I did lost a number of pictures on one restore as it seems my backup program at the time wasn't backing up the image folder.

I now do two regular backups, the first is a daily backup of the database tables, the second is a weekly full backup of the site and every couple of months I do a server backup on the site which backs up everything including all the site software.

All of the above backups are downloaded to my computer and then on to portable drives (two of them) just to be safe in case anything happens to my computer.

At the very least I would have thought there would have been a backup of the PLEX ...  :(

Just got back from vacation abroad... what the what?

The Pegasus site died, apparently from something mechanical.  It seems there was no backup.

Hope you had a nice holiday.

As some of you know for the last few years I have been cataloging the exchanges of the various main SimCity 4 forums, SimPeg was one of the sites I had finished cataloging and apart from going in and checking every few weeks to add in anything new so there could have been something added in the last couple of weeks, but this list is what was actually on the PLEX when the site went down.

Thanks Catty, this is a really useful list.

The worst part are the loss of all the misc attachments.

The hidden gems thread that Paeng put together that linked to all the "little" things he had done and not officially released.  I have much of it DL, but the full listing dying is just awful.

Unfortunately that is because the site is now dead, as much of the site as is possible to recover is being uploaded to Simtropolis, if you were after something on the PLEX then you need to go here

https://community.simtropolis.com/files/category/32-plex/

It may be a couple of weeks before the SimPeg Staff can get all of the PLEX files into this area so you will have to be patient in the meantime, the forums are gone and the tutorial section maybe back depending on what people had saved and have passed on to the SimPeg Staff.

I'm late to the game in learning that SimPeg.com is gone forever.  Been busy building my city Madrigal and trying to figure out why the growth has become stagnant after reaching a population of 127,000.  Ugh.

As far as SimPeg... I find it strange that their reasoning for the site going away is due to website/file corruption on the server.  Catty mentioned this in an earlier post.  My regular job, other than playing Mayor, involves web design, web maintenance, web hosting, etc.  To me, it's unfathomable that anyone would have a website that is not backed up.  Even the small websites I've created are backed up on an offsite server.

I think probably the real reason SimPeg shut down is because it has run its course and is no longer worth the time/money spent to maintain it.  That's my opinion.  Now back to Madrigal...

There is perhaps a case for saying that the site had "run it's course", as one of the last remaining active few, I don't think it escaped anyone's attention that things were getting very quiet there. That said, the spirit of the community was such that everytime the hosting fees came due, everyone dipped into their pockets and chipped in. If money was the issue, it would have ended in December-ish.

As a professional, I can totally belive it wasn't properly backed up, you'd be shocked at some of the things that should be, but are not. Not to mention that Pegasus to my knowledge really didn't have any influence in the day-to-day running of things for quite some time. I think there is the problem as much as anything, that simply no one took/had responsibility for it, who knows all the ins and outs, I'm certain though there is no conspiracy at work here. I know this because certian die-hards, myself included, would have done whatever it takes to save SimPeg if this was about money - heck I'd have hosted the ruddy thing on my own PC and kept it on 24/7 as a last resort.

However, saving the legacy of information is a worthy cause, re-starting a dead zombie's heart without that data really isn't. It's all very sad and many of us wish things were not as they are, but speculation over the exact details is frankfully (left the typo, it's funny) frankly not helpful, these things can and do happen. Hopefully now the community that was once there can at least get as much of what's been lost availible elsewhere, that's about the best legacy that's realistic now. The other losses are painful enough, at least the content will be salvaged out of this and live on.

Head over to my Lot and Mod Shack to keep abreast of my latest developments.

Do you like custom textures, but don't like all the work involved creating them?, take a look at the Texture Automation options here. Change the look and feel of your transit networks, with the minimum of effort, for example customised versions of my Sidewalk NAM (SWN) and Terrain Grass NAM (TGN) mods, and much more besides.

New to the NAM? Check out my tutorials on YouTube. Latest upload: How to: RHW - MHO Roundabout Interchanges. (Nov 25).

p.s. - I'm MGB over on SC4D and a member of the NAM team.

I've always contributed to the hosting fees when they came due, and had anyone hinted that extra money was needed for backups, etc I'd have happily dig out my credit card.

Anyway its great that Simtropolis is hosting the PLEX files, Krio has started a new Bat Thread here

and a small group of us are also over here in the SimPeg Bomb Shelter
