Sorry for the long delay with this update. I had issues making posts in these forums for a while and I been very busy busy with RL stuff. So I'm posting this at this time to keep consistency here.

It's been a busy week. I missed updating 2 assets the past few days in here. So let's catch up. The last first...

Young Trees are great for filling in those untouched areas of your scenes. Also good for new growth forests. Well, these are good for a lot of things.

This Pin Oak tree is my first tree to use the tree variation script. this means you can get 3 variations from one tree asset. More info in the description. Thank you Ronyx69 and TPB for making this possible.

Magnolia soulangeana. Placing these flowers by hand was very enjoyable. And the surprising thing is it was one of the fastest tree modeling I did so far. 6 hours from scratch.

I don't understand why these aren't on the front page of "most popular in last week" on the steam workshop. There are 53 votes as of this post, are people downvoting you?

Yeah, I have a couple haters on the workshop. Steam should rethink how just one downvote affects an item's standing. Not the first time I had something on there with more subscriptions and ratings than ones on the front page but because of 1 or 2 downvotes, it gets bumped way back. It's not like I get 3 or more downvotes just 1 or 2. Particularly the Magnolia recently suffered from this. Gonna write Steam a complaint.

Well, for one thing, I had to spend $200 to double my RAM because of him. It would be more considerate of my bank account if every asset he released wasn't an immediate subscribe.

Sometimes i wonder if it's another modder going around downvoting to get ahead on the workshop. Just a thought.

I doubt that's the case. It would have to be someone who consistently uploads when other modders get their downvotes. Otherwise there wouldn't be a benefit. I think it's a lot of different people downvoting for random reasons. Too detailed, not detailed enough, not their favorite modder, it's a thing they don't like in real life (maybe you have someone with allergies downvoting all your stuff ;) ), didn't like something we said somewhere. Most of the hate we get is random like that, so I'd expect the downvotes to be similar.

    Hey.

The most annoying thing about downvotes in general is, that there's only one case in which it's ok to downvote an asset:  when somebody stole it and reuploaded it to the workshop.

In all other cases I absolutely see no reason for that at all. Everybody tried it's best to create something (so no matter if it's a "high class super detailed thing" or just a "beginners creation)for others to use within their game and this creation always comes for free !!!!

So ... if it's not fitting your taste, don't subscripe to it ! Or if you don't like it in any way, take your own time and do it better ...

Sry ... but I had to write that down ... ;)

    Back to the toric...

I really don't know why people are downvoting ...

In one case, somebody at least had the "honor" to write a comment why he downvoted, but even that wasn't a reasonable explanation.

I guess it has to be a mixture of envy, the idleness the take the time to read an assets descripion and the dissatisfaction with their own lifes in general.

    Thanks for that. :)

I wrote to Steam about that downvote button and waiting for a response. Yeah I don't see the point of having that on the workshop at all. Everyone have different taste. Not everyone loves my trees, that's understandable. But getting downvoted for sharing something just seems very off. Being rated up is more a matter of getting exposure so more players see it. The downvote can simply be weaponized like I can't prove it but right after somebody made insulting comments on one of my pages and I deleted his comments, a downvote came right in.

I totally agree! A positive only system would be much more encouraging. Then stars would be added for the more votes you have. Any reason to downvote could pretty much be solved with reporting instead - like a stolen asset or something so horribly optimized it shouldn't be in game (like a small cube of a house with 50k tris). Steam comments are bad enough to discourage people from sharing things, at least the rating system should be something positive for creators.

I did read some more about it on the steam community boards. Apparently, valve likes to refer people to post their gripes there and just pretend like they don't know it is a user-only forum.

I found a couple references to a downvote being worth 15 upvotes. I couldn't find anything official that says that, but it seems to fit with my personal experience and like you described with an asset getting bumped way back because of one downvote. It most definitely does NOT work like 50 upvotes + 1 downvote = 49 upvotes. And why it doesn't work like that, putting aside the argument that you don't even need the downvote option to begin with, is beyond me. It is more like, 50 upvotes + 1 downvote = you suck and you should just quit. At least that's what it feels like it is saying.

Hiya Mr_Maison, I don't play C:S, but I do enjoy looking at the wonderful things you have created and marvel at how you can achieve realistic results with such a low tri/poly modelling process.

Your thoughts would not be too far from reality and it parallels what occurred here with SC4 custom content. For years, guests could rate files without logging in and users could rate files anonymously. Many batters wondered who was downrating files and then one day, a couple of years worth of ratings data was unhidden and we all got to see. Sure enough there were about 3 or 4 batters who consistently down-rated other batters work but there was one who absolutely stood out in terms of sheer volume and low scores.

So I feel your pain. *:ohyes:

    16 hours ago, Mr_Maison said:

But getting downvoted for sharing something just seems very off.

Years ago, I asked someone (a non batter) who regularly gave low scores why they did it. It turned out the user was quite religious, and if he saw a file with a perfect score, he rated it poorly, as, in his words, 'only god can make something perfect'.....

So in addition to all of the things above (a user doesn't like the tree, they have an allergy, they don't like you, they are on a rival team, they are jealous, etc, etc) you can have some absolute left-of-field reasons.

It is sad to see, because it merely discourages sharing and ultimately quality suffers as proper content creators walk away from the process.

Anyway, I thought I'd share some thoughts from another content creator, even though it's a different game.

One day I'm sure I'll get around to trying out C:S and your files will be amongst the first I download. *:thumb:

@mattb325 Thanks for that. So I'm not being overly paranoid.  I'm still in SC4 with you in spirit BTW *:D

Sometimes we under estimate what people within the same circle is capable of. Like @jc21539 referenced, human nature is always a factor especially when dealing with large social populations.

    Well I got a response:

"Thanks for contacting Steam Support. I'm sorry to hear you're running into some issues with your Workshop items.

Voting on Steam is anonymous. As such, we're unable to provide any feedback on why these votes are negative. However, based on the number of negative votes, it doesn't look like anything malicious is happening here.

That being said, I'll go ahead and forward your feedback about this system on to our Team.

If you continue to encounter any further inappropriate behavior on Steam, I would also encourage you to continue using our official reporting feature - your account will remain anonymous during this process:
    Reporting Content

If you have any further questions, please let us know - we will be happy to assist you.

    Steam Support
     [redacted]"

I thanked them for the response and stressed that it's about the existence of the downvote button and how it does more harm than good because i didn't want the takeaway to be about the "number of negative votes" as an indicator that there's no problem. So the last response was this:

    "Hello,

Unfortunately, Steam Support is unable to share information on upcoming changes or if one will happen to this feature.

For the latest changes and updates to features of Steam, please refer to our News Blog.

Additionally, if you would like to share other suggestions or ideas for this or another feature, we encourage you to submit them in the Steam Discussion forums as this forum is regularly read by Valve's development team.

Steam Support / Jr. Portal Cake Tester
    [redacted] "

Perhaps this is confirmation that the discussion boards is a good place to bring up issues. I rarely go in those boards but I will give it a go when I'm ready. At least this topic got someone's attention. We'll see what happens.

    In the mean time *:DxQe4hzF.jpg
