Guess who still uses DOS.

George R. R. Martin, for one.

It's such a shame chatspeak and 13375p34k have lead to this. You pretty much have to hack Office just to type "teh".

A problem with what?  The system is off-line and runs just fine.  I think I still have a DOS 6 disk around here somewhere.

I wouldn't call the necessary steps hacking (takes me about a minute to undo it).

I can't reasonably imagine why you'd ever want to type that out on a word doc, though. I hate Leetspeak as it is, but in a formalized environment, seriously?!? I try to keep my internet speak to a minimum whenever possible. I even despise lol, though I'll use it occasionally, mostly because I'm actually laughing out loud when I type it.

Well last time I checked DOS is the one that looks like a command prop and yes I prefer the GUI. I am not a very technical person.

I turn off autocorrect. Far too many issues. Also on that note never google search Beethovens third.

If it's the only reason to use DOS. I don't mind the auto-correct to be honest as long as I am writing in English but auto-correcting my Filipino works is sure a pain.

Egads, WordStar!  That one had quite a few ungainly key combinations used to invoke even the most basic editing functions.  I don't miss it.  Even Notepad at times is easier.

Never argue about editors.  They are like a religion and have answers that may not be questioned.  I like DOS, but I also like CPM.  How many of us even remember CPM?

But then, as a Linux user, I often resort to using a console program (of which there are several) simply because the GUI version is too tedious, or doesn't leave enough tracks.  Sometimes there is no GUI version unless you make an icon from a script.  I think the richness of computers is lost on many users.

Whenever I feel nostalgic for DOS (and I still find myself occasionally writing it) I fire up Zork. It's still as maddeningly frustrating as it was 'way back when'.

A few years ago, my grandpa dug out from his basement an old TRS-80 Portable ("portable" in that it had a handle on it ;) ) to show my brother and I what computers looked like in the '80s. He also had many floppy discs (truly floppy discs) for many DOS programs. Unfortunately, he couldn't remember what command to type in to open up a program. :(

Heh.  The trash 80 was my first machine at home.  Played with mainframes during the day and this dinky little toy at night.  Had some nice features.

We had the TRS-80 Model 4 as the well as the then retro looking  Kaypro 4, which closed up into a "portable" case with a handle to lug around its 30 lbs.  The step up later was to the Tandy 1000 SX, which had a large red "reset" button on the front which we had to mark "Reset - Do Not Push!"  I spent untold hours gaming with the likes of "Spacewar!," "Castle Adventure," "Starflight," "Robot Odyssey," and "King's Quest" on that old Tandy.  My schools at the time insisted on the Apple II.
