The United States has been using some metric units in some circumstances for a while now but a full scale conversion is not going to happen any time in the foreseeable future. Americans have little interest in adopting any international standards because we like to do things our own way (classic "not invented here" syndrome). And unlike most other countries we have a large enough population that there is no economic benefit to following international standards since there is no economy of scale benefit to us for doing so. Instead, changing over to metric would just be a huge expense for us and we've decided it's not worth the bother.

I think the US was set to switch a number of years ago along with Canada maybe but backed out at the last minute. The cost of changing all the street signs and what not would indeed be quite high.

I'm very happy with the metric system, thank you.

Just discovered that the times mentioned on my Deutsche Bahn-ticket are wrong. It says my ICE train from Berlin Hbf to Hannover Hbf leaves at 14.06, while in reality, it leaves at 13.07. Glad I discovered that in time... Deutsche Gründlichkeit? It's a myth.

Larks does not represent the US's collective viewpoint in any capacity. Actually, he probably does.

There was a lot of talk in the US in the 70s about going metric. That was the big movement era, a lot of countries switched over about then. The thing of it is, the US government, unlike other countries, never legally mandated a changeover. They couldn't, really, since a lot of things which use units are regulated by individual states rather than the federal government. But they did pass a law saying use of metric is "preferred" (which of course has no teeth). In the end it didn't happen for the same reason it still isn't happening - we realized it wasn't worth the bother and expense.

I don't think the entire US has a collective viewpoint on anything, unless you assume the all too common fallacy that the opinions of people who are opposite you on the political spectrum are somehow less valid.

I'll get to 10,000 eventually, although recently I've not been posting much at all.

To search for the ideal city today is useless. For all cities are different. Each one has its own spirit, its own problems, and its own pattern of life. As long as the city lives, these aspects continue to change. Thus to look for the ideal city is not only a waste of time but may be seriously detrimental. In fact, the concept is obsolete; there is no such thing.

Never been to Asia. Hong Kong does look fascinating, but I doubt I would ever visit... language, culture, and food would all be too strange for me to be anywhere near comfortable with being there. And it's a looong plane ride besides.

While I have never been to Asia, I have many friends who have. In fact, the majority of my friends are from South Korea. Unfortunately, the last time they returned to Korea was to serve their mandatory years in the armed forces. Now going to the U.S., that's another story. I've been to nearly everywhere along the East Coast and to many regions within the Midwest.

Never left the US. I want to. I've just never gotten the chance to. The farthest place I've been from here was San Diego, which is close to Mexico. Other than that, I've only been to New York and DC. Other than that, I've been in Philadelphia my entire life. I wish I could go somewhere else. :(

I have not been to Asia either. Or Africa. Or South America.

I still have 13 states in the US left to visit!

Muck, we've been to the same number of states! I have that (37 states) plus 2 Canadian provinces, and that's it.

Nice. I only have Ontario myself.

However, I miscounted. My count stands at 36. For good measure, here they are;

MA  RI  CT  NY  NJ  DE  PA  OH  IN  IL  IA  NE  SD  MT  ID  UT  NV  CA  AZ  NM  CO  WY  KS  TX  OK  MO  FL  GA  SC  NC  TN  KY  WV  VA  MD and  HI.

Last time I visited a state for the first time? Kentucky in 2009. I was once 20 miles from Minnesota but neglected to go there. Foolish decision.

Hong Kong was owned by the British for a long time, English is spoken there.

Although with the UK and the US being "two countries separated by a common language", that might still be an issue. :P
