As a Thanksgiving present to my cousin I took a look at his computer. I cleaned up 356 viruses (after he'd paid bestbuy to do it. Not to mention clicking anything on firefox opened up an ad page) and turned Windows update back on (it hadn't ran since December 2014). 204 updates later he's all better and I'm at a loss cuz I thought he was decent with computers.

Yes, this is kitty.

I should do a cleanup myself. Firefox has been weird for me lately. I can't get any audio on soundcloud or youtube but I can get audio from other sites. I've cleared my cookies and updated but the issue remains. I would just switch to chrome (which runs audio without issue) but I'm too lazy to move all my bookmarks and then deal with the fact I can't possibly remember all of my passwords. It's no trouble to reset passwords but... ugh... maintenance. One of these days I'll get around to it.

Anyway, greetings from the Carolinas. I've driven the new car in 11 states in the first 5 months. ME, NH, VT, MA, NY, OH, WV, VA, NC, SC and of course, PA. I was in NJ in June but with another vehicle. I poked around Rock Hill, SC today. Beautiful little town.

You can always rent a car when you arrive. Driving on the other side of the road is... interesting. Whereabouts are you headed, Larks?

Melbourne, But first 11 hrs in LA and a bit of time exploring Hong Kong.

I don't think I can, I know I am not old  enough in the US, You have to be at least 24 to rent, besides that is too much of a liability for me to be comfortable with since I am unaware of  their road laws.

We finally have internet and are pretty much settled in to our new existence in the Cleveland area.  I started working last week and after a string of 10 hour days I'm ready to go back to Japan and teach again, but we can't do that until next year at the earliest because of our lease and whatnot.  Anyways, the job itself isn't bad, I've picked up a few new CAD skills, but the commute sucks, big city highways are always awful places to be.

Also, Larks, you asked for clarification on how Japan is crowded: yes, the countryside is crowded, too.  People don't have yards and their small properties are usually surrounded by a 6-foot-ish concrete wall, with the houses built almost right up to the wall.  Farming villages have the buildings clustered close together and then they drive a kei truck or walk to their plot of land to grow vegetables or whatever.  Surround it all by mountains or Tokyo and despite being far lower density it's still pretty crowded compared to the American countryside.

TIL: Nixon was responsible for the strife currently afflicting Latin America and the southern states.

Shower thoughts: If time travel is invented before I die (which would require longevity treatment and/or mind transfer into clones to become available soon), I would go to Eastern Washington in 1960 with a biological age of 12. I would use my knowledge from the Baccloreate of Science in Chemical Engineering and Biochemistry I will earn in 3 years to get rich off research others conducted in the 1970s and 1980s of our timeline. Using the money earned from research breakthroughs and the Stock Market, I would donate to Herbert Humphry's campaign. It would be pretty fun to also raise a son who would be a designer baby with genetics similar to a nephew with many beneficial mutations. That would require marrying a wife with the genetics I desire in my son that neither of my parents have. Btw, I would be an "active senior" in 2015 of the altered timeline since my (forged) birth certificate would say I was born on August 1, 1948; I'd be a Baby Boomer orphan son of a Mexican soldier and American nurse.

Ocram's Razor: Though "more things shouldn't be used than are necessary," they're just too fun to pass up! Expect many verbose arguments from me. I will try to write abstracts before or short summaries after from now on.

Words to live by:
"Now there are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit. But to each one is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good. For to one is given the word of wisdom through the Spirit, and to another the word of knowledge according to the same Spirit; to another faith by the same Spirit, and to another gifts of healing by the one Spirit... But one and the same Spirit works all these things, distributing to each one individually..." 1 Corinthians 4-11

"Do not worry about tomorrow; for tomorrow will care for itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own." Matthew 6:34
"Do not judge so that you will not be judged. For in the way you judge, you will be judged; and by your standard of measure, it will be measured to you." Matthew 7:1-3

^ So that's why time seems to keep repeating itself .

I believe they lied about destroying that time machine .

Only one was destroyed...the train is still out there....:O

but if time repeats that's deja vu which means you're in the Matrix and that's a different movie :P

I thought about this, and am still thinking about it because though I've thought about this, I still have more thinking to do as to stop thinking about it would mean not to think.

I like adding extra cinnamon to my mocha, hoping that with the added Spice, I will become the Kwisatz Haderach and fold space.  "He who controls the Spice controls the universe!"  Then I remembered that in "Dune," the Spice was really sandworm poop...

Indeed, Micro Machines were not on quite the same scale as Hot Wheels/Matchbox and therefore could not be mixed with them... at least in the eyes of a kid who always had a lot of attention for detail. :P

I had hundreds of the more "standard" die cast cars as well, most of them survived my childhood and are now in a box somewhere in my parents' attic. There were some that didn't survive, chiefly of the cheap all-plastic knock-off variety. Aside from Hot Wheels and Matchbox I definitely had some cars from a brand called Corgi, as well as Johnny Lightning (remember those?)

One particular fact of note is that the Hot Wheels and Matchbox brands have both been owned by the same parent company (Mattel) since 1997. They thus are not actually competitors as one might think (though they used to be).
