Ahh Matchbox, I have a full 5 gallon bucket somewhere in the house. My father used to bring me one when coming home from work, for what must have been at least once a week for a couple of years. They had plenty of dings over the years, my grandfather used to say I didn't have a car collection I had a junkyard lol. As far as I remember and what my friend remembers is that the Hot Wheels were mostly plastic and the Matchbox metal. Most of the matchbox lasted where the hot wheels didn't make it. My cousin still has his collection and brought some of them out for his sons to play with in the last couple of years, funny to turn them over to look at the bottom to read 1977. (that's older than me)

I thought about this, and am still thinking about it because though I've thought about this, I still have more thinking to do as to stop thinking about it would mean not to think.

I sold most of my matchbox/hot wheels cars at a family garage sale in 1991. The same guy bought the whole lot for about 30 bucks if I recall. I kept about 60 or 70 though.

Sometimes I wonder if next generations will know what matches are or if they will only will know lighters. Just what the word 'matchbox' means. Like phones with a dial plate. Matches are made out of wood. Lighters are made out of plastic. Only one is native.

That`s how I feel - this world has more and more a taste of plastic.

Survivors of childhood:  the last robots standing on my computer desk shelves.  Zoids Giant ZRK, Robotech Veritech Alpha Fighter VFA-6I, Robotech Excalibur MK VI Battloid, Robotech Raidar X Battloid.  The little battloids were my most prized Matchbox toys, while the veritech fighter was the most sacred jewel of all my toys.

Model Macross SDF-1 Storm Attacker, model Space Battleship Yamato, Orguss Gerwalk Nikick MBG-24C, Voltron, Dairugger XV, Generation 1 Transformers Bluestreak and Ravage, and all the G.I. Joe and Star Wars figures didn't make it.  I had saved the boxes and everything, but such preciousness just made maliciously destructive little brothers desire them even more:  "Mommy says you have to 'share'...muhuhahahahahaaaa!"

Torch lighters are certainly easier to use than matches. But... matches definitely still exist and I don't see them going away anytime soon.

Also, torch lighters are not effective at making a bathroom cease stinking.

Few things about lighters and matches, both give off chemicals, If you are a purest, you will use only a torch lighter with triple refined butane.

My Grampa gave me my first lighter as a hand down, A Military zippo from the 1950s.

I remember years ago when purchasing a pack of smokes , you were asked if you wanted matches . Now there are several different kinds of lighters for sale , but no matches available . When I started smoking , you could buy a pack for $ .85 cents . Now they are over $ 5.00 .

If you don't smoke , don't start . It's a dirty , nasty habit . Hard to quit and can make you sick in many different ways . Why they are still legal is beyond me . There is less harmful stuff out there , that's illegal . Reasons for everything I guess . $$$

$5.00 I wish, it's $8.50 here in NJ and in NYC they are $12.00

Around here you can get a free matchbook with purchase of a pack but most just use lighters so there are basically free matchbooks for whomever wants at the counter.

DO NOT START SMOKING  it's a terrible habit, but in saying  that I hate that smokers are second class citizens, example: During a layover in London a few years ago, I walked the terminal looking for a place to smoke, no such place exists, however if my choice of "harmful habit" was drinking then the bar was open even at 9am, the chocolate and coffee were available everywhere, all sorts of shopping for shopaholics. In order to simply have a smoke required entering the country and then going through security again, all just to stand at the curb for a few minutes.

I thought about this, and am still thinking about it because though I've thought about this, I still have more thinking to do as to stop thinking about it would mean not to think.

As I see it the key difference is that someone consuming alcohol is not much of a bother to others nearby unless they become unruly. Someone smoking, on the other hand, forces anyone nearby to choke and gag on the smoke flying in their face and deal with the stench. Rules limiting where people can smoke are more about making it easier for non-smokers to avoid having to deal with it than about marginalizing it on account of it being a bad habit.

That, and alcoholic beverages have a significantly lower risk of starting a fire if mishandled.

Last time I went to London I was able to smoke right in the terminal at Gatwick but that was 15 years ago.

I have been meaning to make a conscious effort to quit lately but as of yet I'm still a slave to cigs.

@philforhockey51 OMG $8.50 a pack , is that name brand or generic ? I haven't bought a pack in years , I roll my own . So I get a carton to your one pack . I guess you have to pay for all them chemicals that bring on all those health problems . Price is a deterrent .

I guess the states figure , if they are gonna allow people to shorten their lives and /or get some kind of related illness from smoking . They might as well make some money off of it . In most cases they do foot the health care bill , gotta recoup some it somewhere .

They are no doubt a bad habit . They should pull the chemical that makes you want another one , and maybe people could kick the habit a bit easier . Oh , nevermind . Then you wouldn't ask your doctor to give you something to help you stop . Like Chantix , or one of those other drugs that might give you suicidal thoughts . One or two of those thoughts and I guess you won't be smoking anymore .

I loved both Micro Machines and Matchbox cars/Hot Wheels growing up.  Now, I still get to play with them a little because my son LOVES them, he's got a bunch that I used to play with when I was little, and a whole bunch more he's acquired over his very short lifetime.  We've added Tomica cars to my old Hot Wheels and Matchbox cars.

Smoking is gross.

Smoking is gross in many aspects . Now about those Matchbox cars , they always had such great detail . Many rainy day , they were the toys of choice . @NMUSpidey How are you liking Ohio , is it working out for you ? I never cared for moving , things get broke and all your old friends tend to not get seen anymore . At least now , there are more ways to keep in touch though .

Sorry for butting in line , I just noticed . Remove if need be .

Micro Machines good...Smoking Bad

Ray...I smoke Camel Blue

Duke I agree that it is more about getting the smoke away from those whom would otherwise have the smoke "forced" upon them. I could also argue that people consuming alcohol are much more "dangerous" to others, smoking and driving laws don't exist for example... yet.  I'm not saying second hand is not bad or anything like that, all the bad things about smoking are true. - - - Area deleted - - -    Ok this is not the place for this so I deleted and so skipping over the grand debate this eventually becomes about freedom of choice and then people are sensitive to those words .. so.. ok ... how to walk away.....  Smoking is Bad but why can't we smokers also have a designated place for us to smoke like the drinkers have to drink?

I used to hang out with a guy who smoked while I was in college.  I hated it when he smoked Winstons and other cheap brands because the smoke was so acrid and bad.  But when he smoked Camels he was much easier to be around because that smoke really wasn't all that bad in this context.  I always thought that if I ever ended up a smoker I'd be smoking Camels, but that day never came.

Ohio is fine, I grew up around Toledo, so it's not NEW new to me.  Cleveland is, though.  I don't like living this close to a big city.  Marquette was much more my size, and Ito in Japan was more comfortable, too, but whatever.  At least there are no Michigan Wolverines fans, ugh.  My Detroit Tigers hat has drawn some confused glances, though.

Hey Duke , I like your signature , so true . And @NMUSpidey it's funny how much attention a hat can draw . Living here in West Virginia , wearing anything with Maryland or Baltimore gets me some weird looks too . Funny that a firm in Baltimore , MD is who laid out the street plans for Grafton,WV here where I currently live . Maybe that is why I get looked at like I have three heads or something . But that's OK , I just give it back to them .  People $%&^! me up . The word that got misinterpreted ment "Make me laugh" Sorry .

You hate Michigan (University) too?  My father is a Notre Dame alumni, so I grew up with Michigan being the team that "Daddy's team" always had to beat.

And the Tigers hat thing is a familiar situation.  Back when they stunk, I was in Baltimore to see Camden Yards, and since I had no Orioles stuff, I wore all my Phillies gear.  I recall walking into a mall on the Inner Harbor when some dude held the door open for me saying, "I hold the door for Phillies fans."

Big Bird is voiced by a man? Okay, that's... wow, I did not call that. I have always totally pegged the character as having a female voice.

Yup, my family is all Ohio State fans, but since I studied abroad on a program through Michigan State, I like Sparty a little more.  But I hate UofM.  Them and the Twins!

Notre Dame is playing Ohio State on New Year's Day.  It's gonna be intense.

I personally don't care about the AL Central at all.  My least favorite MLB teams are the Yankees, Mets, and Braves.

Big Bird was voiced by a man , I never knew that . Learn something new  everyday .

I'm not big on sports . Only been to one MLB game in my life , coolest part being . I caught a foul ball hit by the visiting team in the Old Memorial Stadium . Baltimore Orioles and Detroit Tigers 198? . Couldn't get the ball signed (Bummer), would rather had been fishing .

I always felt Big Bird male but I was a little confused by Snuffleupagus, deep male voice but had these long long eyelashes lol, I don't know what I was thinking at that age

I have not gone fishing in many years. I used to do a lot of fishing in my youth, my grandfather was a fisherman his whole life like his father before him, and he owned a small boat with an off board motor that he named after me, his only grandson. His family were all fishermen they owned a few small boats that fished in the estuary in Portugal and would fish the ocean during the season in the larger ocean worthy boats. He was running the fleet by the time he was 16, when his father would leave to go Cod fishing with the white fleet. The white fleet was a national fishing fleet that would travel to the North Atlantic in large five mast sailing ships, something they have done since the late 1300s and early 1400s(there is a Portuguese map with Labrador on it from the early 1400s) When he came of age he also joined the fleet as did his brothers. A skill he always had was that he was incredible at repairing nets, since his youth on the estuary. The white fleet started running very large broad net diesel powered trawlers, which would cast a large net unlike what would happen with the sailing vessels.(more on that below) He became the man in charge of the nets, Master of the Nets (translated from the Portuguese)was his title. He did well and as some time passed wanted to expand the family's fleets and wanted to expand his business, but since the country was under a dictator, such things weren't possible so he came to the USA to do it here. He eventually owned and Captained his own Lobster Trawler. In my youth we would travel to Portugal on vacation and my father and grandfather would get into my boat and go out on the estuary many times. I still have a strong memory of my father putting on his mask and flippers and pulling out a spear gun from a bag and then slipping into the water. He would disappear for what seemed like forever, as I was probably 4 or 5, and then would pop up with a fish on the spear. My grandfather and I either would cast a net or rarely a rod and reel line. It was quite an adventure.

More on the White fleet:   They would sail to the North Atlantic and then each of the fishermen would get into a "dingy" and row/small sail from the main ship. They would do line fishing from the dory, that is they would drop a line into the ocean that was very very long and had multiple baited hooks on it. After sometime they would reel in the line by hand and collect the fish. Once the dingy was full or the main ship blew the horn to end the day, they would row back to the main ship unload and then board, eat dinner, sleep, and then wake up to do it all over again for a few months. The entire voyage would take more than half a year and when they would return to Portugal, they would always return with fish, and a few less fishermen than they left with.

Here is a documentary I found from the 60s on Youtube, that if you can make it through will show you how hard it was.

Part 2

I know I went off a bit

Never been fishing myself but I'm not really an outdoorsy guy. Especially not when water is involved (I can't swim). The Ultimate Angler minigame on 3DS Mii Plaza is actually kinda fun though. :P

You have never been fishing ? It can be an incredible experience , being out in nature . And yeah , I can't swim either . But that can't keep me away from the water . I have always been an outdoors person . I only had one job in my whole life that made me work indoors all day , and it didn't last very long .

When I worked in Maryland , I did road work . I drove to the jobs early when water was present so I could through in a line and try to hook something . I use to go fishing almost daily , when weather was nice . I didn't have to work on rain days , so I would go find a local bridge and hang out and fish . Doesn't rain under a bridge , perfect rainy day fishing spot .
