I love being outdoors, but I prefer hiking.  Eventually, I'd like to become an expert camper, but not one of those RV-driving idiots.  I've never been fishing and I have no intention to ever start.  My father-in-law, on the other hand, is a HUGE fan of fishing, has fish mounted on his walls, and leaves at 2am at least once a week to go fishing up in the mountains of central Japan.

Sorry for butting in line , just wanted to say Merry Christmas to everyone .

@NMUSpidey I too love the outdoors and hiking is great . Good luck with getting your novels published . I had started to write a book a while ago , but never finished it . I was going to call it "The Life and Times of a Poor Urban Explorer" , I thought the title was too long and my script was too messy and jumbled for it to be worth the time and money to get published .

Your father-in-law sounds like the kind of person I could get along with , since we have the same interest in fishing . Not the getting them mounted , but getting up very early part . I never went camping , slept in a tent in a friend's backyard once . But I don't believe that counts as camping .

I really enjoy camping, used to be a boy scout so I did plenty of camping in various shelters, full tents, a plastic tarp lean-to, wood cabins with nothing but four walls a roof and an old Benjamin style Iron fireplace.  One time I was invited on a trip that I knew would be in a cabin but I did not expect the electricity or the refrigerator, that didn't feel like camping more like staying in a cheap motel.    Favorite time to camp is Winter, sure it's cold(or used to be) but you can always do things to warm up, but the lack of insects is golden.

I thought about this, and am still thinking about it because though I've thought about this, I still have more thinking to do as to stop thinking about it would mean not to think.

No one in my family was ever into it so I was never invited to do it growing up. Though I have witnessed other people doing it many times. The general impression I get is that I would rather watch paint dry.

The problem is that patience isn't really my thing. Sitting there waiting for something to bite strikes me as extremely tedious and mind numbing.

But to each his own. One of my hobbies is meticulously drawing detailed maps of entirely fictitious places, which I'm sure most people would not think of as a fun way to spend a Saturday afternoon. :P

My dad would take me as a child around Pearl Harbor to fish off the docking piers.  He would not eat the fish as they were too contaminated from the harbor pollutants, but the fish were plump from the ship discharges.  I, however, was bored to tears with the process of fishing.  Fortunately, moored to the piers were numerous U.S. Navy frigates and destroyers, and so I entertained myself playing with the mooring lines and studying the ships.  I don't seem to recall seeing any personnel on the ships, and I would think at least someone would chase off a little kid climbing onto their mooring ropes and daydreaming about sneaking aboard, so I think now they may have actually been mothballed at the time.  Just hitting the heavy ropes and listening to them reverberate and groan up to bow gunwales of the ships was spookily interesting.  Actually, it's amazing I didn't fall into the murky green water...gee, Dad, aside from the unseen sailors, who else there was not paying attention?!

I haven't been fishing in ages.  I recall fishing with my cousin down the shore at a young age.  I've always felt gravitated toward boats, the water... it all puts my mind at ease.

I've never been to Cleveland (I have seen the skyline), but I've heard nothing but terrible things about it.  I have a friend who bashes the city for no particular reason, and I don't blame him.  It seems like the Cavaliers are the only good thing there.

I'd say Cleveland is actually rather underrated and there is plenty of cool stuff there. But then, my definition of "cool stuff" is nothing like a normal person's definition of "cool stuff". I don't particularly care what a city has in terms of things to do or tourist attractions, so long as it is visually interesting to explore.

Cleveland does have a lot of cool stuff.  The Art Museum is supposed to be very cool.  There are three major sports teams (even though they all stink).  The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, and a short jaunt down the highway in Canton is the NFL Hall of Fame.  Cuyahoga Valley National Park.  Downtown was used as a stand-in for New York in the first Avengers movie.  So yeah, like anywhere there are plenty of things to see and do if you keep your options open.  For me personally, I like small towns and more remote locations with much lighter traffic (like I'm the only one on the road), so Cleveland doesn't cut it for me, but I guarantee I would be miserable in New York, LA, Chicago, etc etc because I would rather be surrounded by trees and fresh air instead of millions and millions of people.

And also, more noticeably, as a stand-in for DC in the second Captain America movie. In one scene what is obviously the OH 2 Main Avenue Bridge features prominently. In another scene, a vehicle turns a corner and drives past a pair of signs for US 6 and US 322 - which could also be in Meadville or Conneaut Lake PA but based on the apparent size of the city is logically Cleveland. ;)

One of the things I've come to realize is that I don't much care for tourist-y things, and that I like to experience what the locals experience, not the show they put on for camera-toting nincompoops.

I heard that Spidey , I'm not into the glitzy stuff . That's why I moved to WV , then I seen Wrong Turn . Wow what a wrong turn I made . I didn't care for all the hustle of Baltimore , but I sure do miss it . Been stuck here for eight years now , and not liking it much . Get in a boat here and you can make a couple laps around the lake . Get in a boat in Baltimore , and you can find your way to the ocean . I don't like going in circles it makes me dizzy .:boggle:

For me it's not even experiencing what the locals experience, it's mostly checking out the infrastructure. I went and rode the subway in Cleveland not because it's what the locals do (if my experience is any indication, not very many of the locals do ), but because I like trains and wanted to see what that one was like.

Of course it's even more fun visiting places where tourism isn't a thing and people are unlikely to travel there on business either. I love the weird reactions I get when I tell people Charleston WV is a cool city.

I've made a few trips to Cleveland since my friend moved there but I haven't explored the city since the time when I had a bad experience there. They get a lot of good concerts that don't go through Pittsburgh though. I saw Deftones there once. Citizen Cope as well. For my next trip I'm thinking of going to Chicago. I've only been to the airport.

Shower thoughts:

Paraphrasing self-plagiarism cannot exist: updating essays you wrote a few years ago isn't plagiarism

The world would be vastly different if--during the 5th Century AD--Carthage ruled the Mediterranean Sea & old world economy, Rome controlled & developed Europe from Italy to Portugal to Northern Greece to Poland, and the Maya used llamas (traded from Moche).

Ocram's Razor: Though "more things shouldn't be used than are necessary," they're just too fun to pass up! Expect many verbose arguments from me. I will try to write abstracts before or short summaries after from now on.

Words to live by:
"Now there are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit. But to each one is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good. For to one is given the word of wisdom through the Spirit, and to another the word of knowledge according to the same Spirit; to another faith by the same Spirit, and to another gifts of healing by the one Spirit... But one and the same Spirit works all these things, distributing to each one individually..." 1 Corinthians 4-11

"Do not worry about tomorrow; for tomorrow will care for itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own." Matthew 6:34
"Do not judge so that you will not be judged. For in the way you judge, you will be judged; and by your standard of measure, it will be measured to you." Matthew 7:1-3

In a legal sense, if you wrote the words they are yours and you violate no laws by reusing them (a.k.a. "self-plagiarism"). Indeed in the real world this is common practice due to the efficiency of it.

Your teachers may not think too highly of it, though, since school assignments are not just about producing an end product and by turning in a previously written paper you avoid the experience of writing it, which is much of the reason for assigning it.

I can't imagine writing a dissertation. I don't have the patience to write anything that cannot be easily finished in one sitting. Hell, it's gotten to the point where I don't have the patience to read anything that cannot easily be finished in one sitting.

But I will gladly embark on personal megaprojects to draw detailed maps of entire cities. To each their own, eh?

Heh, what I meant was that I won't get paid enough while earning my PhD to support my family unless my wife is working, and then we'll be in debt due to child care.  So, yeah, that's a non-starter at this point in time.  Maybe in the future.

Writing a dissertation isn't as fun as writing fiction, but you know, it's not the worst thing in the world.  I'd probably enjoy drawing maps nearly as much, but i know that everyone is different and a dissertation is not a project anyone can take on.
