Um... the Bahamas and the Dominican Republic are both independent countries. Which one are you considering to be a "territory"?

I didn't have money for Puerto Rico, that was the territory.

No, why, what about the Virgin Islands?

They drive on the left there, unlike the rest of the US, in order to match the British Virgin Islands next door, which they are much more connected to economically and culturally than they are to the US mainland.

Can't wait, Still laughing about what Sheilds has done to himself as he continues to sit and wait.

He probably won't get a 100 Million dollar contract now like he would have early on.

I still don't get baseball.

I tried to watch a game when I was over at NYC. My impression was that people just meet there to eat and drink beer while waiting for a homerun. For hours, while nothing interresting happens below.

To be honest: I also don't get cricket.

The thing about baseball is that it is very different from other sports. This makes it difficult to get into as an adult because it simply isn't going to meet your expectations of what a sport should be if you didn't grow up with it.

Yes, a lot of baseball is "waiting for something interesting to happen", but that could be at any moment. No other sport does dramatic suspense like baseball does. And it's not just home runs - hits, walks, etc. may or may not ultimately lead to scoring but they are measurable steps towards it.

I mean, I don't get soccer. People say there is constant action, but there really isn't, there's just constant people running around not achieving anything. Soccer has no bases loaded with your power hitter at the plate. Soccer has no sac fly, suicide squeeze, stolen base, etc. Baseball is a game with a lot of depth. Other sports are not nearly as complex, except perhaps gridiron football (in its various forms).

If you do get a chance, though, I would say that watching baseball on TV isn't going to get you into it. You need to go to a game in person to really experience it.

I would argue that if you know and understand baseball at all, you'll be able to at least have an appreciation for what's going on in the game.  There's a lot at stake when the batter's waiting for that pitch, or when the pitcher's waiting for the batter to get set.  But more than that, the social aspect of it is what appeals to me.  There are a few other Tigers fans in my life, and it's fun to share the ups and downs with them, it's exciting to watch games with them.

I would be hesitant to doubt the complexity and depth of other sports.  I didn't grow up watching soccer and I don't really know anything about its strategy, its drama, etc the way I do baseball and football.  Soccer comes across as a fairly simple sport, but I know I'm barely scratching the surface of it.  I didn't even know who Messi, Ron... Ronaldio... Ro- screw it, I can't remember Captain Gorgeous Gaze's real name, or, uh... Nakata?  He's a soccer player, right?  Anyways, I didn't know who those guys were until I came here where soccer's rising in popularity.  When I go back to the US, it's all getting left behind, and I'm okay with that, but I'll do my best not to look down on it.

Baseball is the only professional sport that is played where the defense has the ball, that alone makes it unique in it's own right.

Well aside from cricket but that is like Baseballs cousin.

As I see it, baseball and gridiron football have one crucial thing in common: the game consists of distinct "plays". The action starts and stops, and every time it does something different happens in the next "play". This makes the game strategy-heavy, and in turn makes the rules complex in order to keep it balanced.

Games like basketball, soccer, and hockey are different in the sense that they do not consist of distinct "plays". The action runs continuously for extended periods of time, and while there is certainly strategy, there is a lot less variety to what happens since there's only so many ways you can hit a puck across the ice.

I've found pretty much every sport boring to watch until I got into hockey. That one I like and can keep me entertained.

The only baseball game I ever went to was when I was really little. I went with my dad and my grandpa and was told there would be dinosaurs. I left pretty disappointed. Dinosaurs running around would have been waaay cooler then the Cubs.

Yes, this is kitty.

Pretty much anything is better than watching the Cubs.

To make soccer really entertaining to watch they should introduce a second ball into play.  That would really make that sport something to see.

That's an interresting point. I never throught about that.

@ Duke: I watched a local game for some time when I came by a baseball field in NYC. Soccer has quite some strategy in it too, depending on the lineup and so on. But it still does not get me entertained.

@AFL: :D

What makes American football for me is the drama: The Game with Cal and Stanford with the laterals and the band out on the field, the David Tyree catch in that Super Bowl with the Giants and Patriots, Ohio State's victory over Miami in the 2003 National Championship game, Boise State's ridiculous victory over Oklahoma in the Fiesta Bowl back in '06, and that's only touching stuff that's happened during my lifetime.  Then you've got the Immaculate Reception, Jim Marshall picking the fumble up and running it back for a 'touchdown' only to find out he saftied himself, Drew Pearson pushing off to cheat the Cowboys to victory over the Vikings in the NFC Championship Game in the 70s, etc etc.  There's some good stuff there.  Oh, and don't forget that the NFL Films stuff is set to the NFL Films soundtrack, and THAT is AMAZING.

Oh, and everyone should go to Youtube and look for Barry Sanders highlights.  That's something to see before you die.

If soccer had a multiball mode then I would be a lot more interested in watching it.

Then it would be called Pinball :P

It's only for the 60th edition, and it's somewhat popular down under, so to me it doesn't seem too odd. Would be funny if you win the bloody thing, that would mean SBS would have to organize it with another European country, plus they'd get the right to participate one more time in the 61st edition :P

I mean I guess Australia is ex-British Empire. But then by that logic Canada, South Africa, and India should be participating too.

I'd say it's silly for non-European countries to be involved but then isn't Kazakhstan or someone else around there included?

4647: They'd probably send someone like Kylie Minogue or Jessica Mauboy to compete, but I'd much rather someone like Courtney Barnett compete. (If you don't know her, look her up as she is absolutely BRILLIANT).

You mean Azerbaijan? And Israel. Mmm, kinda thought that was odd too since they're both geographically considered Asian. Even politically. Always thought Eurovision was exclusively for European continental states (+GB ofc :P).
