This is an intriguing concept, looking at the online play aspect of a console as almost a sort of social network. I never would have considered that but then I've always played video games as predominantly a solo activity so what anyone else has or wants isn't particularly relevant.

That said I do appreciate it when someone has a 3DS because then I can StreetPass them. I must StreetPass all the people, collect their puzzle pieces, and have their Miis rescue my king from the cartoon monsters. Also the Miis are cute.

Yeah exactly, I prefer it more as a public activity, I've a very competitive person so games like Call of Duty or battlefield or sports like 2k or and my favorite game series of all time MLB the show (PS exclusive) feed into that competitiveness.

Also I use games to like hang out with people I'd like to hang out with but can't do to logistical reasons so playing a game is the closest thing to being there in person.

Back when I had my PS3 there was a online world thing called PlayStation Home and in it there was a place called EA Sports world and I'd get into poker matches with friends and also strangers there even won a virtual bracelet which was pretty cool.

Unlike going to pokerstars or full tilt this was easier and more a friendly place for them to play with me.

Gaming alone is cool too but it gets very boring real fast I much rather enjoy a co op mode.

Yeah, I play video games to escape from the stress of the real world and have some quality alone time. Dealing with other people while I am playing video games is usually the last thing I want. In years of owning Super Smash Bros Brawl I think I played an online match once. I could have any time I wanted to (until Nintendo discontinued Wii online) but chose not to.

I am very competitive as well, but in video games and in everything else, I much prefer stacking my solo achievements up against those of other people to competing against them directly.

I think it comes down a bit to just how extroverted you are.  I'm not, and I hate people, and in GT6 I'm sure I would be hated because I'd cheat to win, and that makes a difference.  My coworker is extremely extroverted and he loves playing one of those military shooter games (they're all the same to me, so I won''t bother trying to remember which one it was).

I'm more into the teamwork with squads and stuff so the new Tom Clancy's The Division is one game I am hugely looking forward to.

Division by zero is not defined.

It's so not defined it's actually defined as being not defined.

To search for the ideal city today is useless. For all cities are different. Each one has its own spirit, its own problems, and its own pattern of life. As long as the city lives, these aspects continue to change. Thus to look for the ideal city is not only a waste of time but may be seriously detrimental. In fact, the concept is obsolete; there is no such thing.

I do find it rather odd how many people either outright hate math or just aren't very good at it. Give me a restaurant receipt and I can easily estimate how much everyone owes including tip without using a calculator or pen and paper. It is, in my mind, a very basic and simple task that I could do in my sleep since it is just elementary arithmetic. But when I do this and quickly rattle off "hmm, that and that adds up to... okay, I'll put in $17, you owe $12, and you owe $14", people look at me like I'm some freak of nature. Apparently the ability to do math in my head very quickly is insanely dorky. :P

Dividing by zero is not possible. It's just a maths joke :P

Thanks, timmie, seriously.

Anyways, math is so underappreciated as a vital part of our lives, and even our sciences suffer for it.  Researchers who aren't mathematicians publish papers with a whole bunch of wrong or faulty math.  If I ever go back to school, math would be something that I would think very seriously about, and I'm more of a creative writing type of guy.

I can do the calculate-the-tip thing in my head, too.  I don't think it's weird, but it does give me a heightened sense of superiority in comparison to the rest of my fellow humans.  Except you, Duke.  You're good.

Why is it socially acceptable to be proud of being bad at even the most basic math?

Because the power of association is a very strong thing. Generally speaking as an individual's intelligence increases, so do their social awkwardness and deviation in personality from "normal". Our shallow society has decided that the latter two traits are more meaningful than the former one, and therefore any level of skill which shows that one is exceptionally intelligent becomes stigmatized. Being good at math is considered an undesirable trait, you might be labeled a geek.

To be fair though I do think that when one exhibits exceptional skill like rapidly dividing out a check, people are kind of put off by it because they 1) feel like the person doing it is showing off, 2) are made to feel inferior because they can't do that. There is a fine line between being smart and acting like you know better than everyone else. And unfortunately doing the former without being perceived as doing the latter is often impossible.

You can either make the equation in terms of limits but this will still not be able to allow you to divide numbers by zero.

It shows how distant one is from the "nerd culture" which sometimes has benefits for some reason.

Anyways it isn't that I am bad at math it is just that I don't enjoy anything about the subject and rather just use a calculator to get it over with.

I don't think anyone except elementary school teachers really expects you do to arithmetic out by hand in a world where everyone has calculator apps on their phone.

But when you are seeking merely to estimate rather than get an exact answer, that can (if you're good at it) be done very quickly in your head. I'm not actually adding up "$2.99", "$7.95", "$4.50", "$5.50" when I look at a receipt. I'm rounding these numbers off and saying "okay, 3+8+4+6=21. 10% of that is 2.1. For tip, 20% of 21 is 2.1 times 2 = 4.2. That's $27.30 all together but tax is less than 10% so round down and I owe $27."

For me, this is faster and easier than taking out a calculator unless there are more people and the list of items gets longer. This is a skill that requires practice to develop in order to be able to do it quickly, though. Practice which most people don't get because they don't care, but which I get plenty of because you don't want to know how many times I've lied awake in bed trying to crunch numbers in my head because I have to figure something out before I can fall asleep. Almost always something unimportant but I am a nerd and must know all.

Everyone in my immediate family played Sim City at one point, but no one does anymore. My father was the first to stop, he liked SC2K but thought SC3K was too complicated. I was the last to stop, I played SC4 for a couple years after its release but lost interest once the game became unstable and kept crashing.

My brother was the one who introduced the game to me. Until now, he is asking for a copy but I haven't given him my steam account yet. :P He stopped playing for some time, addicted to DoTA and online games. But SC4 is different, it is a timeless classic, something people will always get back to no matter what. Guess. it is the reason he wants to play the game again.

If my wife joined and started commenting on my journals, would it look like I made a clone account and was commenting on my own stuff?  She read most of The Sensational Six here but she can tell me how much she liked it in real life, so she never really needed an account, but it's something I've thought about.
