Larks, Leonard Nemoy was in Star TREK, not Star Wars. And as the original Mr. Spock, yes, he has a lot of fans.

I think he's making fun of us.  I've chosen to ignore him.

Also, for all us mourning nerds:

EDIT: Also, Nimoy.

@ Spidy, I fail to see the allure of such outrageous stories.

I drove 300 miles in a snowstorm today. In a rental car with Georgia plates. Wonder how many double takes I caused? :P

4715: You're nuts! I hated driving on windy roads in a storm the other night, don't know how I would deal with snow..

I had to drive home from work last year on a closed road in my van on summer tires after being told by a cop that I would be on my own when I crashed.  I didn't crash because driving in snowy conditions is no big deal to me, even, apparently, on summer tires.  But you know, you have to go slowly on snow.  Being in a hurry on snow is what gets idiots in trouble, even the ones from snow states where they should know better.

Id's say it ain't just speed that causes trouble on snow - also the way many people use their brakes.

Indeed, it's not as simple as "go slow" and in some cases that is actually the wrong thing to do. Yes you need to go slow down hills and around curves but going up hills momentum is your friend and going slow is how you get stuck or slip and slide trying to get up.

Generally though the basic concept is that reduced friction equals less force you can apply before you slip. There are three ways of applying force in a car: gas, brakes, and steering. What you need to do in snow is avoid doing any of these three things too hard, or doing multiple at once. When I'm on the highway in snow I will hit the gas on straightaways and then take my foot off the pedals and just steer around curves sans gas or brake. When I'm going down a hill in the snow I use low gear to avoid having to ride my brakes. Really, it's not difficult. The snow is less of a hazard than the idiots on the road who can't drive in it properly.

If you always take the same road, you will never see anything new.

In southeastern Michigan/northwest Ohio where hills aren't a problem, going more slowly is good advice.  Here, where there are mountains (but it never snows), yes, momentum is your friend going uphill.

Driving competently in snowy conditions is practically an art.

Duke, you might recognize the singer from Blur as being the same fellow from Gorillaz. He is still very much involved in music. If you aren't a fan you may have missed the gem, Stylo.

It's like 20F out and I shovelled a little bit in a light sweatshirt and jeans. It feels warm compared to a couple days ago.

It's a really nice sweatshirt too, I got it for Christmas.

20F is a definitely comfortable temp after dealing with colder ones. I'm moving to California in a few short months so I'm in my last PA winter for the foreseeable future. In CA I'll have the heat to complain about though.

Question: Do you wear your shoes inside your house?

My family and all of the friends I can think off don't. Shoes get taken off in the front hall and left there.

I was thinking of this question cuz I hear all the time about people who leave their shoes on all day but I've never seen it.

    Yes, this is kitty.

Anyone like the shoes off in house?

My family always took their shoes off.  Dad's side, Mom's side, everyone.  I do know the odd person here and there who doesn't, but it's a rare encounter for me.  My students here in Japan are always surprised when I tell them that because they're apparently under the impression that taking your shoes off when  you enter a house is a special Japanese tradition and the barbarians who live overseas don't care if their own houses are dirty.  Wearing shoes in your house is disgusting.

It makes sense to take them off in the winter, otherwise I track snow and salt and whatnot around but I don't give it much thought in the summer. If you think about some of the places you walk and then think about what is on the bottom of your shoes, you realize how dirty they must be.

I almost always have some form of footwear on.

Guess what?  I've had two snow days in a row, and my birthday is Sunday, so that means I have a four day birthday weekend.  Woo-hoo!

Like it even more if it prevents dog droppings from being tracked in.

Side note, new Wolfeinstein game announced, Why are there no games where you get to play as a German? Everyone always kills them in the games but I'd like to actually play on the other side for once.

Nazis get more hate then any other faction in video games.

4739: True, but games about killing Nazis are getting old. I would find interesting q game where you could play as the Germans against the Allies interesting, just without the genocide implications.

Also I don't have a rule about taking off shoes in the house, but I prefer to do it. Just more comfy.

If such a game does not already exist, it would be cause for mass hysteria.  Well, that's how people would react.

So, believe it or not, even though I'm well into my teens, I actually went to my first NBA game yesterday.  I saw those awful 76ers lose... again.  With all the sports games I've been to, it seems like the low attendance crowds are the most enthusiastic about it.  Massive cheers with every Sixers basket.  Back when they were horrible, I went to Baltimore to see the Orioles play at Camden Yards.  They lost, but these few thousand people were cheering them on the whole time.

Also, before the game, we heard a rap song about how good this city is, then we had a moment of silence for the police officer shot and killed at GameStop.
