I have a secondary ST account, but because there was a glitch preventing me from uploading features to the home page.  Said glitch has since been resolved, and MrSaturn22 is now obsolete.

4534: Naww Spidey! At least you have kids of your own :3

After starting my new job, I'm starting to get into the whole wine thingy. Cracked open a bottle of Vermentino which is a variety I have never tried before. Crisp and Herby with a bit of lemon zest, nom nom.

(although I had to stop myself from buying a Shiraz/syrah that is as old as me today...)

    Tomorrow is the last day of classes for the year 2014. Do teachers really intend to destroy their student's vacation by giving tons of homework?  :rofl:  Although it's quite a long holiday, January 2015 wouldn't be very easy either, midterm exams will be on the second week. Also, guess what? Someone is running for campus student government vice president!  :}

I seem to be about the only person in my family who doesn't like wine. It tastes like rancid grape juice and I'm not fond of grapes to begin with.

I get surprisingly snobbish about beer, though.

Going back to the topic of math for a second, Is it really necessary to be able to do math problems in your head anymore when now even your watch can do it?

You can now use that time to study other important things that can't do with technology.

Speaking of wine, I drank wayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy too much at the end-of-year party last night with my fellow teachers and spent all day sick.  I drank mostly beer, but I'm gonna blame how sick I was today on the three little glasses of rice wine I drank.  God, it was awful, I haven't been this hungover since I went to Mardis Gras way back in 2003.  The party was fun, though.  I just don't like the price I'm paying for it right now.

The trouble with saying "I don't need to know how to do this, I can use a calculator" is that the calculator can give you the answer but it doesn't make you understand the answer. Math skills are important not simply for doing math but also for understanding the concepts behind it. The latter is still important even if the former can be done with technology.

Yup. Learn math. Or learn maths, if that's what you call it. When I worked at a hotel my boss asked me to come up with a way to figure out some rather specific figures. He was all "I have no idea how to do it!" At that point I re-introduced him to algebra so as to figure out specific occupancy numbers for different categories of guests. He thought I was a genius. Lol.

Sorry, I went MIA for a bit there. At first I was like, I'll catch up on the thread another day. Then weeks went by. So... I neglected to read the last several pages. tl;dr :)

History, too. Well, after high school I went to university to study for a Master of Arts in History, so I think that's pretty obvious :P

Mine was science but math obviously ties in.

My least favorite subject was English. I hate writing, especially when it is to other people's standards rather than my own.

    Merry Christmas!

My favourite subjects were Physics, Chemistry, and the two Math ones I took (you had to take one in order to take the other).

To search for the ideal city today is useless. For all cities are different. Each one has its own spirit, its own problems, and its own pattern of life. As long as the city lives, these aspects continue to change. Thus to look for the ideal city is not only a waste of time but may be seriously detrimental. In fact, the concept is obsolete; there is no such thing.

Hahah. I think what he meant by that is that there are many branches of math. :P

Math is two subjects now? What did they do, spin off imaginary numbers into a separate entity?

At the high school I went to there were three maths subjects - Maths A, B, and C. I took B and C, which were effectively general maths and pure maths. I think A was more practical maths.

At my high school our math classes were named after the topic they primarily taught (remedial, algebra, geometry, trig, stats, pre-calc, calc, etc), you just started in a course and then over your 4 years you moved up to the next math class.

Speaking of math, I've fiinished my first (and last) college calculus class. Next up, linear algebra, intro to statistics, and discrete math

I don't know what to put here anymore.

Define "play the stock market". It's super easy if you just put money in with the mindset that you're in for the long term and let it ride. You're virtually guaranteed to make money that way so long as you avoid high-risk investments.

It's when you try to get clever with quick flips, short sells, and other such things that you really need to know what you're doing or you're likely to get burned. But the necessary knowledge is more business than math - what going for gold in high risk situations requires is thorough understanding of the financial picture of the company you're looking at. You need to be able to do things like read quarterly reports and understand what all that mumbo jumbo in there means.

I'd prefer just stuffing my mattress full of money and sleeping on it.  Aw, heck, who am I kidding?  I'd rather just blow it all in a whirlwind of stupid, thoughtless purchases and world travels.  My wife would kill me for that, but it would be worth it, I'm sure.
