The 8 km x 8 km map (64 km2) is great, but for transportation like subways that is still not a big area.  Most subway lines are longer than 8 km (5 miles).

Does CiM2 have a regional aspect like SC4?  It would be perfect if you could connect your cities exactly as they do in SC4 with transit lines spanning the connections.

Needs only two things right now:

Splitters and connection roads.

I also want to give a shout out to the maker of this fine game, Paradox Interactive. If you like this game, also look into their other recent titles...especially Crusader Kings II. (Yes it is a completely different genre of game, but does not shy away from complexity and may be of interest to the type of players who like a good complex city simulater.)

I'm waiting for my bank account to recover a bit, but I'll certainly have this game on my watch list!

the map editor is impressive, complicated but nothing I can't manage. :P

It is sooooo confusing. I want to make a blank terrain, but I can't figure the map editor out....

Ignore the map editor options -- in the terraforming tab, you should see an edit button. Click it.

You can heighten (or lower with left mouse) terrain there like you do in SC4, flatten it, smooth it, plant trees (random tree is great), and a couple of other stuff.

The complicated math stuff is for doing random maps or something. :3

Also, this is the Cthulhu Fountain or what XD this map suffers from "too much magnet mod" syndrome..somebody thought it fun to plop a thousand visitor magnets around your fountain. :(

I also GREATLY enjoy the freeways and how easy it is to make ramps and exits and cloverleafs and stuff. Even NAM can't do that! (but NAM/RHW quite looks better though)

I do admit I miss landmarks in CiM 2 but I'm sure a mod will come up or something and add a bunch of them.

I know that if you build new roads in an existing city, buildings will pop up automatically.

But if you build transportation into existing developed areas, will there be any changes to that area -- larger buildings, increased building or population denisity?

Can you open an existing city in the editor and terraform, make new roads, plop down buildings, etc or is that limited to new, empty regions that you create?

Well, after reading the positive coverage from people who have actually used it I decided to buy Cities in Motion 2 this morning. I hadn't used Steam before, so installing that and immediately updates to that after installing the game meant not much of morning left. So far I have only played around a little with the moving around controls. It is clear that I will have to attach a mouse to my laptop; using the keyboard doesn't give fine enough control.

So far the thing that has impressed me most is not transport related. I noticed that some trees were moving backward and forward; I had to look down to make sure that my finger was not causing it. Trees in Cities in Motion sway! I spent ages just watching the pattern of the shadows of trees swaying on a grass area.

I haven't spent much time with the prebuilt cities, building my own is too much fun, but the little time I have spent there it seems that when building in developed areas the buildings will upgrade.

The game has two formats, one for levels (maps) and one for city saved games.  I have not yet found a way to bring city saves into the terraformer.  I wish I could though, there are some changes I would like to make to my city's terrain.

I like to watch the cars.  When they stop they tilt up in back like actual cars do.  Very nice.

Yes, the buildings will grow with better transportation! This game is great! I couldn't get my hands off it this weekend.

Cites in Motion 2 is so good because Paradox listens to it's customers!   It's a pity that Maxis has not learnt that simple lesson.

Have been checking out videos/livestreams of CIM2... I daresay Colossal Order have succeeded at making a better city sim than the new SimCity! My laptop's getting a little long in the tooth so I doubt I'll be able to run the thing, but I may pick it up on Steam anyway as a show of support--at $20, I've already gotten my money's worth just watching other people play it! :thumb:

Bought this game earlier today based on the feedback in this thread and the pics in the screen-shot thread. WOW! Spent a few hours in the blink of an eye just doing the tutorial map. I foresee spending a lot of time in this one.

I'm quite disappoint that I can not see any citizen activities other than just walking. I think I have seen people do more in Tropico 4 and Anno 2070.

A terrible excuse to boycott games. Steam isn't about making games work, so it's a non-sequitur.

Sorry, do I need your approval to dislike steam or something?  Should I submit an application form somewhere to the almighty Motina to dislike steam?  If you wish your purchases/rentals to be controlled by a middleman, go right ahead.

By the way, I know it isn't about making games work, point is, it has absolutely no purpose to exist other than to control gamers.

I was giving approval?

Should I submit an application form somewhere to the almighty Motina to dislike steam?

That would seem like an odd thing to do.

I'm bored of these red herrings.

If you wish your purchases/rentals to be controlled by a middleman, go right ahead.

By the way, I know it isn't about making games work, point is, it has absolutely no purpose to exist other than to control gamers.

How do they control them? What's the problem? I buy a bunch of games for 50% of 75% off that I would never have purchased in the first place because of price. Or, the games comes from an obscure company that I would never have seen, and end up loving the game.

Surely the middleman should have some profit for that?

Most of the DRM is 3rd party on steam. Meaning the DRM is coming from the publisher/developer. Other than that, steam is no different than a unsecured CD/DVD. Lose you disk lose your game. But... How can you possibly lose Steam?

Until you resolve these logical fallacies I will continue to have trouble understanding your irrational views. Submitting for an approval? What? Irrational!

I don't care whether you understand my reasons, do you not get the fact I do not like Steam & refuse to use it & nothing you say or do will change this, now just get back to worshipping your shrine of the steam gods.

Just wanted to fill in a simplification posted earlier in this thread. Paradox are the publishers.  The game was actually developed by a company of just 9 people called "Collossal Order", and two of  the actual developers are daily participants in the Paradox forum for the game, which has impressed me greatly.

I thought Mariina Hallikainen said about 20 people worked on it, or that Colossal Order is made up of 20 people.

That's the whole Colossal order team :

I'm amazed such a small team based in Tampere, Finland made such an awesome game! Imagine if they had the financial capacity of Maxis... :P

Somehow, I completely missed this. Too much SC4 lately ;). My Steam account claims that I spent 308 hours with CiM 1, so I guess this one should be right up my alley. I'm not sure how I missed that I can now really build something. Sounds like heaven :D. $20? Count me in.

Edit: Bought it. Looks awesome at my first short glimpse :).

It isnt Paradox that listen to the customers it is CO devs and they have done this from day one when they first launch CIM.

It is good to see CO listening to the customers. However over ground metro lines should have over ground metro stations. The smart development around new roads is a nice feature, as is the auto develop tool in the map editor. However the terrain tools are too small. In SC4 you could make a massive hill/mountain and then edit this massif into a more realistic form. In this game every inch has to be sculpted as if it were of marble and you were Michelangelo!

The tree tool only gives out a thick forest, there should be a sparse placement tool. The graphics are excellent and I shan't complain about anything graphically related as there is nothing to complain of. If SC4 had graphics like this...

It would be nice to see CO develop a new SC type game and see what they built. CIM seems... Alright for its function. But it is hard to see just from this what a city simulation game would look like produced by that team. To be honest I would be happy just to see SC4 reproduced with curvy roads, 3D graphics and a version of 'glass box' like what CIM uses.

Sorry that I gave credit to Paradox and not the real development team at Colossal Order.  Sorry!

There is a dedicated web site devoted to both CIM1 & CIM2 called CIMX.  It looks very similar to Simtropolis!  It has the same layout and content: it can found here : http://www.cimexchange.com/page/index.html
