And several of the other sites that were so quick out of the gate with their glowing reviews have steadily dropped the scores.

SimCity Burning: A Warning to Microsoft, Sony, and All Publishers on The Dangers of Always-Online DRM

Dan Stapleton spent plenty of time arguing with people about how always-online wasn't a big deal.  This is a bit disingenous coming from him now.

EA, you have killed the golden goose.  You should regret your actions.  EA, you deserve all those very poor reviews, even from the professionals.

This is pathetic! That's the result of being led by the love for money instead of by love for the franchise

We actually should be thanking EA. They've effectively killed the overgrowing presence of what is now known as DRM.

Well I am not sure that SimCity fits the definition of a "golden goose" lol.

But Kevin at gamespot is one of the few professional reviewers that I trust and that has credibility. Usaully his reviews are on the mark. EA has royally screwed up this title. It may yet develop into a great game, but that appears to be far off from now

I think its been that way since about 2004 or so :(

The early isometric games had so much depth now all they care about is lighting effects and how the sun moves accross the sky so "realistically" ...and other stuff that really is not important at all.

Most of the time I don't trust Gamespot or IGN reviews because I often find that they don't know what they're talking about. And usually play down the bad aspects of bad games and don't go in depth with the good ones. LazyGame Reviews and Angry Joe Reviews usually do a great job at going in-depth with a review.

However I will agree with Gamespot on this one. Their score might even be a touch high.

The only positive out of all of this is that this disaster may have killed off the online-DRM movement for good (hopefully)

This is a PR nightmare for EA.

The problems are so glaring after so many botched launches, even the biggest fans of always-online DRM have to face the music now.

They deserve this; they have people such as myself that would've purchased the game even if I could pirate the game (as evident of my four or five copies of SC4 that were all purchased not pirated) but instead they decide to punish all of us who actually purchased this game by having it always online. Plenty of us purchased the game wouldn't have been playing online with our game all the time, so by them making it always online for them (I bet they're playing in private regions such as myself) only increased the amount of servers they need and while drastically under estimating the amount of people who will play the game, they screwed theirselves. I can only imagine how much revenue they got off us for something thats barely playable, but they also missed out on much more revenue from people like two of my friends that said they would buy it after I tell them how it was (hint: their not buying it). So EA, needs to let Maxis do its own thing and only provide the expenses (without poking their greedy fingers in) and this game would've been excellent; Maxis actually has something to worry about when they lose fans, EA doesn't since it has much more games.

Finally, A punch EA can't get back up to real easy without caching some breath and having no way of just walking it off. Because the punch was that powerful. It really the case of, "who's the tougher person now". We are,  the consumers,  because we have the strength in numbers, not in the belief of stamina shielding us.

I knew I should have waited for some months so they could figure out the bugs. All big games like this have issues at the start but i found out that they had 10...10 servers so i pre-order!. For once i would love to see a company over kill on something. IT just goes to show you that EA's all about money. EA's a company, It should be about money for them, but they have for gotten where that money comes from...YOU & ME!!! Screw their ALWAYS ON-LINE PLAY crap! We should want to play online because it offers something more than a single player experience, we shouldn't be forced to. O-Well, They already got my $59.99 plus tax so I have no more say. Hope the servers go back up by April.

I bet EA would be willing to sell their Simpsons rights to pay for the damages, as they haven't done anything with it for half a decade. Surely I could afford it?

This is beyond glorious. GS, you just regained all respect and Kevin has always been one of the more respectable reviewers. EA couldn't BUY (like they did with all the early reviews) GS's credibility because GS knew it would loose all.

Is the reason for DRM really due to piracy? I know they like to blame it on piracy. But there must be other ways to curb it besides the always online thing. I suspect that the reason for DRM has more to do with maintaining corporate control of the product/brand, and maximizing profit through additional charges for extra content, time, etc.

In effect, players aren't even really buying the game anymore. They're renting it. And of course, they can be evicted at any time.

I am happy that honest reviews are coming in. I hope that an offline mode can be offered in a patch or expansion pack.

Ocram's Razor: Though "more things shouldn't be used than are necessary," they're just too fun to pass up! Expect many verbose arguments from me. I will try to write abstracts before or short summaries after from now on.

    Words to live by:
"Now there are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit. But to each one is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good. For to one is given the word of wisdom through the Spirit, and to another the word of knowledge according to the same Spirit; to another faith by the same Spirit, and to another gifts of healing by the one Spirit... But one and the same Spirit works all these things, distributing to each one individually..." 1 Corinthians 4-11

"Do not worry about tomorrow; for tomorrow will care for itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own." Matthew 6:34
"Do not judge so that you will not be judged. For in the way you judge, you will be judged; and by your standard of measure, it will be measured to you." Matthew 7:1-3

Oh he wasn't a fan of DRM to be sure...but I participated in arguments with him about how it wasn't that big a deal for this game.

ITs a great game that EA is ruining.  I hope this gives us an offline mode so we can have our own regions not online.

It has always been a myth about piracy & the sales that they are losing, right back to the 1980's. The industry seems to think that every game pirated is a sell lost, when in reality nearly all these people would never buy the game anyway, whether they had any option to do so or not.The only losers are the honest people, who don't pirate anything. Hopefully EA will go bust, but in reality they will carry on ripping off people. Awful company.

GameSpot actually using a 1-10 scale instead of 7-10 is shocking, I didn't expect as decent of a review as this to come from them.
