Cor blimey. And i thought England was cold. Back in the gong it was forty c last summer and wintet rarely goes significantly below freezing. Coldest in England ive been in was minus ten or so. Mind you this is the south. Up in Scotland its probably snowing now. Its still above freezing here though. Surely in temperatures like minus twenty your face would freeze and your blood solidify? How could people go outside in that?

If the wind-chill goes to -55 C or lower, exposed skin freezes instantly.

Around here it is -8 and the sun is coming up into broken cloud.  Wind chill -17 from South winds at 27 Km/h.

Shaping up to be a little warm over the next few days. The forecast for Saturday was a maximum around 40, but we apparently only got up to a few degrees under that.

 

And last year was the warmest on record.

Looks like an extreme weather cycle in both hemispheres at the moment.  Two ships now packed in the ice near the Antarctic continent.  If it wouldn't take a couple of months we could lend them one of our nuclear ice breakers, but a pole to pole voyage is kind of out.

Cold and dry over here. It's supposed to rain one day this week. If we do not get more rain soon, California will be locked in a serious drought..

Top of ten degrees here. A frost fresh from primary school has appeared this morning, and seems failing. Haven't had a proper frost for some time... At this rate it shan't snow till February.

It's so cold outside right now an egg will freeze solid in about five minutes.  Looking at the thermometer,  it's reading -28 with wind chills hitting -50-60.  That's about 30 degrees colder than it was yesterday and supposed to get colder yet tomorrow.

Blizzard and wind-chill warnings continue.  However, this is supposed to lead into the January thaw by the weekend.  Have to go out today to get groceries.  Will definitely wear arctic parka.  Now where did I put that toque.

 

Update:  found toque but trip was cancelled.  Bus driver couldn't get out of his house.

Brrr...it's been kinda cold here in South Texas.  San Antonio got down to 22°F (-5.6°C) yesterday night, though we are expecting to return to 70°F (21°0C) by the weekend.
 
Okay, Northerner's can laugh at us poor South Texans bundling up from "The Cold."  Instead, what has really befallen us is the return of Cedar Fever season.  Ashe Juniper, locally called "Mountain Cedar," is a wild native tree whose dry, shrubby forest spans the Texas Hill Country, most concentrated in a range between San Antonio and Austin along the Balcones karst.  This tree peculiarly pollinates in the winter, when cold and dry air helps crack open the male trees' pollen-filled cones.  Cold air fronts blowing in from the northwest readily break open these cones and spread the billowing, smoke-like pollen southeastwards onto San Antonio and Austin.  Ashe Juniper pollen is unusually potent in its chemical irritancy, making San Antonio and Austin the pharmaceutical industry-designated "Allergy Capitals" of North America.  The colder and drier the air, the worse is the pollen plague, and it gets more than cold and dry enough at night for the trees to try and silently suffocate the region's human population as they sleep.

That is not smoke.  Nope, it is the aerial release of Weapons of Mass Destruction!  Steady rainfall will temporarily wash the pollen from the air, and thankfully, we have had light rain and drizzle all day today, and the rain is expected to continue towards the weekend.

Chuckle.  Something like the 'golden rain' we get up here in the pine forests in the late spring.  Pine pollen doesn't seem to be a very active allergen.  My old place was in the middle of a forest and everything got anything from one-eighth to one-quarter of an inch of pollen.  A good soaking rain washed it into the ground where it seemed to encourage the growth of the beds and grass.

I feel really weak complaining about temperatures above zero being cold after reading Moose's forecasts... I have a cold and am in a heated room and outdoors its like ten degrees celsius and I'm complaining its cold...

-14 (-18) heading for much higher.  1 C forecast for tomorrow, and we are into the January thaw.  Expecting above zero over the weekend.  Right now it is sunny.  Today is the day I rebooked my lift to the grocery store, so here's hoping the sun stays around.  Likely to be pretty sloppy tomorrow as things turn into slush and water.  Hope we don't get a flood.
