Looking very nice; the detail-work on the signs is incredible. As people have said, not sure if z6 is necessary but I wouldn't discourage it.

gutterclub, Francis, Jason, Paul: Thank you and I'm convinced. I will render this the regular way. Now as Pierre suggested I've slightly exaggerated the stripes by reducing their number and therefore making them thicker, but as you'll see, it didn't change the final outcome that much. I tried what Paul suggested and it takes very long and the result is just slightly better. I've even remodeled the whole part but when I rendered it, result - same. I might leave it as it is.

pineapple132, Darknono35, libellibicus and Aaron Graham: Thanks folks

Parisian, as T Wrecks already said, there are some XXX things on STEX, but this won't be one of them. And if you're thinking of Manhattanville Project, it's on the Stex too.

ZA; Thanks, the thing that persuades me not to Render it HD is that it might look bad compared to other zooms and other BATs.

So the ground floor is done now. Roof I changed again, not too happy with it, it might change again :P and HVAC pipes are remodeled due to better images shot on goodgle satellite image, yes yes I know it is not that unique afterall. But its textures are changed as well. And just for the sake of it, I did night lights. So tell me, what else needs my attention so we can get this baby done and move on?

Yep, raising the sampling per pixel will make the renders take much longer.  In this case I really do not think it is necessary, but on my 270 Park Ave it was necessary to prevent some on the aluminum striping on the side of the building from disappearing at zooms 1-3. In that case I only increased the max sampling to 256, and kept the minimum at 1 which, from what I understand, allows the renderer to determine which areas are fine with 1 sample and which need up to 256.  Increasing the minimum sampling had little to no affect on the render quality but nearly quadrupled the render time for each level of increase.

Anyway, the building is looking great!  We definitely need more buildings like this to really bring out the character of NYC.

Interesting point Jason.  Do you know if there's anyway to change the compression settings to favor quality over size? I've noticed that occasionally in the night views, the colors, usually on the rooftops, look almost as though they're been compressed down to 16bit color instead of 32bit, and it is only present in the game, not in preview renders.

Wow, it looks great! :golly: The rooftop looks a lot better than before. I had been wondering about those ducts, but since I figured you were basing them on real life, I shrugged it off - what do I know about HVAC systems, after all? The new duct layout looks a lot more plausible to me, though.

Looking at the day view, all I can say is that I'd gladly take this building as is. :) In the night view, the only minor quibble I have is that the front wall seems to be illuminated by spotlights with rather diffused light cones (which I like!), but somehow the top of the awning doesn't seem to receive any light, so the illuminated front wall is cut off very suddenly by a nearly black horizontal bar. That's why these two elements (front wall and awning) seem to clash a little at night. It's still by far nothing that would keep me from clicking the "download" button, but if you'd be willing to take a look into it... if not, that's OK.

As far as day view is concerned, i'd like to take a look at the back of the building.

As far as night view is concerned, it looks like no any show going on in the theatre (ground floor is dark) - if so, then why the marquee is lit?

Sure, more often than not shop fronts are lit at night past the shop's closing hours, and let's not even talk about big neon banners and similar stuff...but at a certain hour in the night it all shuts down...so, i'd like to ask you - if this was not a 24/7 theatre (i don't know about it, you might) - would you like to represent it at 9 PM (floodlights, lit up marquee, lit lobby, the last show going on inside) or at 3 AM (theatre closed - perhaps no floodlights so late in night, and dark marquee)?

NOTE:By "marquee" i mean the metallic part overhanging from the building, where current show names and the theatre's name are written.

Paul & Jason: So basically there's no use of rendering it like that?

Thomas: You are right! and I've tried to fix that now and plus incorporated what Fran said. The only problem there is that when I light it up more, the spotlights start reflecting on the facade lower. Is that a problem? And should they be brighter than they are on next renders?

Fran: You are right as well. So here are some options I explored and you tell me what you like or not and what direction should take:

These are the side and the back of the Midtown:

    side1g.pngside2e.pngbackge.png

    Now the night variations:

This is with omnies placed around the canopy. Strong reflection on chrome bars tho:

    monies.png

Here I've lit up the ground plane as I figured sidewalk textures are a bit orangy when lit up by night (in game), so I've tried to fit that in:

    groundplaelit.png

And this is with only letters of announcing shows lit up:

Personally, i like night option 3 - what was the building's reality, though?

I'm not convinced by the fact that there's no light from the lobby glaring outside...but all the light from the lobby, or from the bottom of the marquee, would glare into the sidewalk, and this is something you can hardly fix in SC4.

AFAIK the only ways would be to make one prop that could cast light on the street, or BAT the sidewalk (using one sidewalk that's very common) - and then threat the building as an overhanging building (but maybe you already have to do this, if the marquee is more than 1,6 mtrs deep).

I think you've done an amazing job with all of it, and this is something i know can hardly be fixed...i just hope there's a way to do so, and that, if there's a way, i hope you'd try it.But i want to say, once again, that i think you've done the best possible job given the situation.

Speaking of the bricks, i know enough about what you're aiming for, but i'd see wheter you can make it (slightly) more subtle.

It will be a very good add to my entertainement district! Thanks Vlasky. Obviously (and refering to you last uploads), you like industrial buildings, and I am like you. Would you consider a sort of partnership with me to realize something like the DOmino Sugar Factory in Williamsburg or the ConEd station in LowerEastSide (or another huge industrial building in New York)?

Thank you guys for your support.
@Parisian: Pierre, I'd love to work on something with you. Your work on that cathedral showed that you care about details. But in order for us to work together on some project, we would have to be synchronized, and yes here comes the story about 3ds Max again.

I work in 3ds Max, and if we were to work together, you would have to work in Max as well. Now, I'm a patient guy, and once you transition to Max and conquer its basics (and it's not hard at all) we can choose a building and do it together. I hope you'll come back to me with good news soon (that you have switched to max).
