Test Cricket has a distinction between a draw and a tie. A draw is when the game finishes before the conditions for victory have been met - when the last team to bat has fewer runs but are not all out. So 484 and 273 vs. 502 and 3/100 (or 100/3 depending on preference) is a draw. A tie, however, is when both teams have exactly the same score when all wickets have been lost. Ties are much rarer. Out of the over 2,000 test matches played, starting in 1877, only two have ever been tied, in 1960 and 1986. Both involved Australia.

For the record, the scores were as follows:

First Tied Test

West Indies 453 and 284 to Australia 505 and 232.

Second Tied Test

This one is somewhat more interesting, as Australia declared in both innings.

Australia 7/574 and 5/170 to India 397 and 347.

This is in contrast to baseball, where by modern major league rules there is never any such thing as a tie. As many extra innings as necessary to decide the game will be played - although, union rules say an inning cannot begin after 1 AM, so if the game is not decided at that point, it will be called off and one of two things will happen: if it has the potential to sway the standings (or if it's in the postseason), play will resume from where it left off at a later date. Otherwise, the game will simply be unfinished and not count as anything. The same rule applies, by the way, for games cut short due to inclement weather (if before the sixth inning or tied at time of suspension).

In Japanese pro baseball (the NPB, for those who weren't with us on page 235), there are indeed ties. I think they allow three extra innings to decide, and that's it. I also think there is a time limit as well, but I was never all that clear on it. I believe it has to do with a few things: first is regarding spectators getting to and from the stadium. Everyone uses mass transit in the big cities, so the games MUST be finished by the time the last trains are departing. There are also environmental reasons given, trying to limit the amount of power used for the games, although I'm pretty certain that's a buncha horse excrement. I'm sure the TV schedules have something to do with it as well. My students are always surprised when I tell them that MLB games go until there is a winner.

Not necessarily. Not all cancelled games are always made up if neither of the teams in question are vying for a playoff spot.

For example, the 1990 Orioles finished 76-85... that's only 161 games.

I actually found an article where they had a couple people on the board arguing that Bonds was already HOF material before he started juicing, and that they would vote in favor of him on that merit.

Which is distressing but fortunately I don't see that being majority opinion.

So you downloaded mods without even reading their descriptions?

I read the descriptions, but that's not generally enough of a lesson in using the mod. Three of the mods just add significant amounts of new content which is going to take some time to learn to use properly and effectively (specifically Buildcraft, Industrialcraft and Equivalent Exchange).

The only three I got that don't add lots of content are Craft Guife (adds one book that lists all recipes), Too Many Items (doesn't add any items, just lists all the ones in the game and lets you have them for free - useful when testing to see if other mods have installed and are working properly) and MAtmos (improves the ambient sounds).

And yet you play SC4, which, by scale, is lower-resolution by far.

I'd expect you to be more a fan of FPSes made entirely out of shades of brown and grey.

1. I occasionally play Minecraft (more so in the past) though my attention shifted to Anno 2070 and now Winter Quarter.

2. I know quite a bit about IndustrialCraft, having played it since Beta 1.6 while waiting for Aether to be released. I only got to play Aether for a short amount of time because of incompatability with IndustrialCraft. I used only Millenaire and TMI for Beta 1.7 and only TMI for Beta 1.8. I used Millenaire in Beta 1.6 as well. I do not need flying hacks because TMI allows me to switch between survival mode and creative mode (which allows flying). I have always used TMI in order for building and sometimes for testing.

3. Pixelated 2D blocks would be in sidescroller games, like MegaMan, Terraria, and others.

4. I only watch sports games inside of stadiums or fields (which is rare) though I sometimes channel flick to the Super Bowl.

5. That comment about First Person games in Grey and Brown (with bloom undoubtedly) refers to the fact that reflections of light off of opaque (not shiny) surfaces is very hard to get right so instead of trying to realistically show a red circular tint on a white wall near a red sphere, they lower the saturation of the colors to browns and greys. This is far easier because then they only have to account for brightness. It only works with gritty, desolate, or NOIR scenes and is rather jarring when the situation would have saturated colors in reality.

6. An interesting thing is that in Anno 2070, atmospheric affects are used to graphically show the Eco Balance (to give a visual representation on top of the statistics). Neutral Eco Balances have no effects, low Eco Balance has smog. High Eco balance has bright, sunny days (bloom, specular, camera shine) and clean rainy days (visual rain). The bright days are rather annoying but make sense why the Solar Panels are affected by Eco Balance.

7. I have to do 2 more missions for S.A.A.T. in order to unlock the last Ark upgrade slot. Once I get that, I could make my coal power plants, windmills, and offshore windmills get bonuses (remove Eco Balance affect of coal power plants while nearly doubling output, lowering maintenance cost and area of overlap --- which decreases output when overlapping --- of my wind power), which would eliminate any need for expensive nuclear power plants or spamming a combo of Coal Power Plants and Ozone Generator Eco Airships (they clean the air and restore the Ozone Layer) while covering every shore with Port Authorities to maximize offshore wind power and covering my island with overlapping windmills. When starting as a Tycoon, I just start with all 3 coal power upgrades, the 3 star and 2 star nuclear power upgrades, and the 2 1 star upgrades lowering harmful eco effects of Tycoon buildings and lowering electricity consumption of Tycoon buildings. Once I unlock Ecos, I use 3 star coal, 3 star wind, 3 star offshore, 2 star coal, 2 store offshore or wind, 1 star coal, 1 star general Eco balance, and 1 star electricity (lowering consumption or lowering overlap for windmills or offshore wind). I also discovered that I can load things in my Ark from any save point and they will show up in all my games (which lets me cheat by doing things at various save points --- including autosaves --- of the same game and loading supplies and items into my Ark. Furthermore, unlocked research formulas (so the general research opportunities) transfer over to all games. My current strategy is to unlock all research formulas in my current game, load up my Ark with black smoker stopping special metal converter resources (so I can get unlimited copper, iron, and uranium from underwater plateaus instead of just manganese, diamonds, and gold). I have noticed that in the late game, river slots are at a premium for Ecos because they need river slots for making pasta in addition for extracting sand. Sand is used for Ecos' glass and Tycoons' cement. Tycoons also need jewelery and the only way to get gold is from a river slot or underwater.

I occasionally play Gran Turismo 5, NCAA Football 10 and Madden 10 on my PS3, and more often play SC4, SC3K, and Civ IV on my PC and that's about all the gaming I do these days. I'd like to try Cities XL 2012 just to see what it's like, but I just don't have the time or money to do anything else. I like watching sports on TV but I live in Japan and that makes it difficult...
