Duke, you have no idea how good you have it in the States. In Japan, ANYTHING involving cars, driving, or driver's licenses is such a massive, slow, expensive nightmare, I'd kill for the chance to stand (or sit, I guess) at an American DMV for an hour or two and be good for like five years. It is awful here, made even worse in that this country is supposed to be famous for its efficiency. I guess it doesn't apply to driving...

Waits at the DMV are never 1 hour. They are often hours of waiting. In California, it often gets up to 5 hours waiting on Fridays.

After passing my driving test I got my provisional license within 15 minutes. Guess the Department of Transport office near my house isn't as busy as your DMV.

Of course, I did go in the middle of the day, so that may have had an effect.

To search for the ideal city today is useless. For all cities are different. Each one has its own spirit, its own problems, and its own pattern of life. As long as the city lives, these aspects continue to change. Thus to look for the ideal city is not only a waste of time but may be seriously detrimental. In fact, the concept is obsolete; there is no such thing.

Well, we don't even really need to go into a DoT office to renew our licences here. If a new photo isn't required you can renew it by BPay or other online banking, over the phone (I think) or in person. Even if you need a new photo there's several post offices that are authorised to take new licence photos so you can just go to one of those instead :P

From walking in to walking out with my new license... 45 minutes. Pretty good compared to some other experiences I've had.

I just beat Portal and Portal 2 in two days. They were both amazing, especially Portal 2. So amazing that I pretty much spent all of yesterday sitting in front of the computer playing it. :P

You would think it pretty good that I got in and out of the DMV in 45 minutes.

Stupid thing is? My uncle informed me after the fact that I could go to the AAA office to get my license renewed, no membership required - and apparently there's never any line whatsoever there since most people don't realize you can do this.

Guess that's something to keep in mind in 2017 if I'm still carrying a CT license...

Merry Christmas, Hamish! And to everyone else, as well! It'll be Christmas here in about 100 minutes (as of this posting. We'll be joining you shortly!

In my hometown, there's a local MI Secretary of State office that serves my township and there is usually little to no waiting, especially during the daytime. My experience with the Japanese driver's license system has been a weeks-long, paperwork intensive nightmare, including multiple trips to different offices (none located conveniently in the town I live) and a driving test that is little more than a joke played on foreigners, Americans in particular. Buying a car takes weeks, not hours, and I sorely wish I was exaggerating. God bless America, seriously. 5 hours? And you can achieve your goal, OccramSeattle? I envy you.

Something that Japanese and Americans sorta have in common: not always friendly to foreigners.

Although, it's a different dynamic. For the Japanese it's "you're not one of us, therefore you're lesser than us", for Americans it's "when you come here you do things our way, we don't cater to you"
