I actually got that it was Cricket, since I know of "Test Cricket". Though I will admit I have no idea how that works. :P

I suppose the best way to explain it to an American, or anyone else more familiar with the Cricket derivative known as Baseball, is to say it is like baseball except completely different. Another good way would be to drop this link and walk away (taking care to not be run out).

Michael Clarke's on 251 not out, an exceptionally good score against a team like India. We're hoping he can get to at least 300.

To search for the ideal city today is useless. For all cities are different. Each one has its own spirit, its own problems, and its own pattern of life. As long as the city lives, these aspects continue to change. Thus to look for the ideal city is not only a waste of time but may be seriously detrimental. In fact, the concept is obsolete; there is no such thing.

Does that mean that ST member Twenty20 took his/her name from cricket? And should I be capitalizing the sport's name? Also, after reading halfway through and realizing I barely understood any of it, I think I'll stick with baseball.

You can leave the balls to go past you if you wish, you're under no obligation to hit them. Kinda hard to score runs if you don't though. :P

There are situations where it is better to leave the ball than hit it. Like when the only way to hit it would send it straight to a fielder.

Twenty20 is effectively hit till you miss, Test Cricket is much more tactical.

All sports, once you get into them deep enough, offer plenty along the lines of tactics and strategy. I do prefer football and baseball (I am American, after all). I will watch (and understand) the occasional hockey game or auto race as well.

I catch the occasional game on TV here. I like the Hanshin Tigers. I started off living in Kansai (around Osaka) where NPB's Tigers are located, so it was very convenient making the switch from MLB to NPB. The Hanshin Tigers won their first Nippon Series in like 30 years in 2003, the same season Detroit was chasing the MLB record for losses (they came up short: only got the AL record). I don't follow NPB religiously, though, and spend most of the summer reading up on Detroit.

Still got nothing on MLB.

MLB is not in itself a sport, and in any case would only be the equivalent of county cricket in England and Wales.

On the topic of sports, Australia has four popular football codes. We call none of them "Football", as that would be confusing in most circumstances. For the record they are AFL, Rugby League, Rugby Union, and Soccer. And I have no idea which of the two Rugbys is which.

Ah the tigers, good team, i'm a fan of Tomoaki Kanemoto, Tsuyoshi Shimoyanagi, Shinjiro Hiyama and of course the record setting Matt Murton (formally of the cubs) myself. My favorite team would have to be Motonobu Tanishige's Dragons, followed by Orix (Still miss Tuffy Rhodes) and Rakuten, i wish Bobby V stayed with Chiba, but i guess when Benny Agbayani left he did too, wish he at leasted returned to manage the Mets instead of the Red Sox, still surprised Gene Lamont of Detroit almost got the job, and now that Dave Duncan is taking leave in St. Louis, it will be interesting to see who will take over temporary, lot of candidates to do the job, would be interesting if John Mozeliak calls on Mike Maddux, although with the recent success in Texas, i doubt he would want to give it up for a few months in St. Louis, Should be interesting to see if Joe Torre takes control of the Dodgers, after what Ned Colletti did to the team, its gonna take a few years of repairing, at least he locked up Matt Kemp, still miss Jeff Kent, seems 2nd base hasen't been the same with out him, hope he goes for a bench job. With the Astros moving to the AL next year and Bud Selig stepping down its gonna be a great season in both major leagues next year. Still wating on the Yu Darvish signing too, been wanting to see him in MLB for a long time.

Yup, Kanemoto's got a big bat. I'm partial to Kyuuji Fujikawa. When I lived in Osaka, I always seemed to come home and turn the games on *just* at the end when the closers were out, and of course, Fujikawa was ALWAYS closing for the Tigers.

There were a lot of Detroit fans praying for Gene Lamont to get the job in Boston. I didn't get to see any games myself, so I'm not entirely sure why Tigers fans had soured on him. Oh well.

I'm not sure Darvish is gonna be great in the MLB. Seems like Japanese pitchers have more difficulty adjusting than the other position players do. Hideo Nomo is more the exception than the rule. Matsuzaka hasn't done much other than being injured. I certainly hope Darvish can succeed, unless he plays for either Chicago team, Cleveland, or Minnesota. But he's negotiating with who, Texas? I can't be bothered to check right now.

MLB is not popular at all in The Netherlands so I have no idea what you guys are talking about.

So how about we change the topic to football! :D

For football, I'm a Giants fan. Playoff round 1 tomorrow against the Falcons!

As for soccer, the US is one of the few places in the world where it isn't very popular. We have MLS (Major League Soccer), but it's a niche market here. Your average American probably isn't even aware MLS exists.

Fugi has good stats for his career, i doubt he would last as long as someone like Kudoh, but he should be solid for awhile.

Its the Rangers.

@ Eʟᴇᴍᴇɴᴛ: As for football, my Dolphins aren't really at a time where they are successful, so I've kind of put football on the back-burner until they can be successful again, however the Heat are doing excellent.

But oh well, how is the NFL at the moment? Any predictions for the SuperBowl?

While ties are possible during the regular season (if nobody scores in 15 minutes of overtime), during the postseason they are not. If the game is not decided in overtime, it will go into double overtime, triple overtime, etc., until someone scores.

This is in contrast to baseball, where by modern major league rules there is never any such thing as a tie. As many extra innings as necessary to decide the game will be played - although, union rules say an inning cannot begin after 1 AM, so if the game is not decided at that point, it will be called off and one of two things will happen: if it has the potential to sway the standings (or if it's in the postseason), play will resume from where it left off at a later date. Otherwise, the game will simply be unfinished and not count as anything. The same rule applies, by the way, for games cut short due to inclement weather (if before the sixth inning or tied at time of suspension).
