Well, I'm a big movie fan... I would not know where to start (or end) such a list, because I have dozens and dozens of 'favorite' films  :-)

So here is just one off the top of my head -

Pan's Labyrinth (El laberinto del fauno)

written and directed by Mexican filmmaker Guillermo del Toro

Because we are several pages in now, here is my (revised) list in no particular order:

Gone With the Wind

The Great Dictator

Twelve O’clock High

Casablanca

High Noon

Star Wars Episode IV - A New Hope

The Bridges of Toko Ri

A Bridge Too Far

LOTR - Trilogy

Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire

How to Train Your Dragon

Bambi - original version.

Many of you are too young to have seen some these when they originally were released.

Nonny Moose, did you know that when adjusted for inflation, 'Gone With The Wind' is the highest grossing film of all time?

Since everyone started to list their favorite movies, here's mine:

LotR - Trilogy, fantasy, friendship, love, warfare, i just can't ask for more. My favorite of all time.

Saving Private Ryan, Jackson is my favorite character.

Troy, epic! just epic!

Harry Potter.  I can never get enough with magic

Sherlock Holmes the Movies (Robert Downey, Jr), i love the way he(Sherlock) thinks.

Kingdom of Heaven, despite its innacuracy in historical background, i just love this kind of movie.

Enemy at the Gates, did i say that i just love this kind a movie? A movie that has a historical background, though this too has some  inaccuracies.

Pirates of the Caribbean Trilogy, i love pirates! But not piracy!

There are many more to come but sure i'm not gonna list them all. At least those are my top 8 list. So, that's all folks!

Well, there are too many films that I've liked to remember and make a list, but a recent favourite film I've seen is Chicken with plums. It's originally a graphic novel by Sartrapi, but I've not read it. Even though I hate to watch well-made tragic movies since I feel awful at the end, it is still a definite favourite of mine.

Personally I don't like epic movies that much, so I never got into movies like LotR and star wars...

For the one who asked: "How to Tame Your Dragon" is a not very slick animated feature about a Viking kid who rescues an injured baby dragon and tames it.

Yes, I knew the GWTW was a very rich money mine for the producers.  We don't make them like that any more, and expectations have been downgraded.  Actually it was MGM's excuse to do some urban renewal in their back lot.  They burned it down.  No CGI in those days.  The only real computers were at Bletchly Park.

Oh, right.  Senior moment.  Fixed.

Anyone who copied that post, and there was at least one, should recopy it.

It is a pretty good read too.  It says things in the book that could never make it to the screen.

I remember that book as well. It was a standard read in early-year high school English. I may have enjoyed the book more had it not been for the "activities" our teacher made us do. Years later looking back, though, it was a good read. We didn't see the movie, however.

Back to what my favourite movie is, personally for me it is Tron: Legacy. I know many people didn't like it, but I really enjoyed it. It was really well done. :)

Just watched The Hobbit - An Unexpected Journey.

I'll take it as one of my favourites along with the LOTR trilogy.  Fantastic scenery, great CGI, not unreasonable acting, reprises from some of the characters from LOTR.  Generally a nice tie in.  Lots and lots of thud and blunder.

Only sort of follows the original book.  Lots of insertions and omissions.

An outstanding questions is whether Saruman was already turned to the dark side?  Christopher Lee made a good appearance of being an obstructionist.  Since Sauron had yet to be booted out of Mirkwood, I  am not sure whether Saruman was still white or had changed.  Maybe that was the idea.

It really is a cliff hanger in every sense of the word.  A rather obvious device, and maybe a pun.

Watching old movies on CHCH-TV on channel 11 can sometimes reap a great reward on a Saturday afternoon.

Currently watching Pygmalion by George Bernard Shaw starting Leslie Howard and Wendy Hiller (1938).

Had this one jammed down my throat in Grade XI in place of a Shakespeare because the faculty felt we needed exposure to Shaw.  Well, at least they didn't pick something quite so opaque as You Never Can Tell.

If this film had been shown to my English class, a lot more of the class would have liked Shaw earlier.

Battleship Potemkin is one of the best movies ever made. This fan-made video for an Arcade Fire song clearly shows why:

Although it is a Soviet propaganda movie ((in the UK, it was X-rated until 1978!), it has often been voted one of the best films ever made by critics. From a cinematographic point of view, the film is a masterpiece, given that it was made in 1925! The images are incredibly powerful and the filming decades ahead of its time.

Anyone posting in this thread should state the date on which he first started viewing motion pictures.

I started in about 1943 when my parents took me to see Bambi.

^ I honestly don't remember when I started watch movies. I was told by my parents that when I was just 1-2 years old I apperantly used to stare out the window and look at the movies on the drive in big screen. (There was one almost right across the road from that house).

Digging through my old PSX games, I happened to come across a game that was based on the Emperor's New Groove. After I had taken a look at it, I really wanted to see it again since I haven't watched in I don't remember how many years. Maybe when I am not pre-occupied with something else i'll see if I can find it.

Shirley you must be joking.

must resist urge to quote Airplane! MUST RESIST!  RESIST!

Yeah, oh, god, those movies were hilarious.

Airplane and The Naked Gun must be in my top ten.  Let's see how such a list would look today, mid-May 2013.

Airplane!/The Naked Gun

Akira

Star Wars Trilogy (original, unedited, brilliant version)

The Avengers

Spider-Man 2

The Fifth Element

Die Hard

Up

Iron Man

American Pie 2

Bonus fun facts!  The Incredibles barely misses the list.  Up was just that much better, and there are a few things that bother me after I think about it a bit.  There is a Japanese director named Mika Ninagawa who makes these incredibly colorful movies.  I'm not sure the stories are all that good, but the scenery and costumes are so rich, I'll watch anything she directs.  At the end of the day, however, I'd much rather read a stack of comic books, though :D

What has my sister-in-law got to do with this?

Anyway, we seem to have arrived at the facetious end of this thread.
