Watched the new production of Alice in Wonderland from Disney last night. Johnny Depp sure turns up in strange places. Most interesting interpretation.

I am waiting to see if anyone has the guts to try to remake Gone with the Wind.

Shhhh! Don't give those nitwits in Hollywood anymore ideas.

they already tried to remake Casablanca but i don't think it got past casting.

That's a high crime and misdemeanour against humanity. To attempt the other would be sacrilege, and we'd have to turn them over to the secular arm for disposition.

To attempt a remake of either will always fail in casting. That qualify of actor isn't around any more. That all died with Liz Taylor, who was probably the last of them.

I am a firm believer that book to film adaptaions almost always never work.

I have read Cussler's novel Raise the Titanic! and then saw the 1980's fim adaptaion. The film was just dull and monotnous and I would say stick with the book at all costs.

I have also read Of Mice and Men and saw it's respective adaptation as well. While the film did manage to get close to the book in some respects, it still wasn't a match to the book.

I'm aware that 1984 had an adaptation as well, but I am going to finish reading before even touching the movie. Even then, i'm skeptical about the film..

the only book to film that really worked was Jackson's LOTR. Iv even forgiven him leaving out The Scouring of The Shire.

but he did what needed to be done to make it great, cost and production time were irrelevant and great casting.

Cant wait for The Hobbit

oh and Sci fi channels Dune/Children of Dune mini series was pretty darn good to. back when Sci fi cared about what it ran.

Iv only seen a few Steven King movies, but iv heard those stay pretty close to the books.

Well, let me push you all back nearly a century. Margaret Mitchell's Gone with the Wind. You can get it in any reasonable library, or a really thick paperback. Read it, then see the movie. I think, all things considered, that the adaptation into a screenplay was as good as it gets.

Sept. 8th.

Well, I watched a documentary last night called The Captains. It was by Bill Shatner and was a retrospective and conversation with the men and woman who have played the ST captains. Casual, conversational, covering all kinds of topics, and quite a pot boiler. Worth seeing.

Tonight I am watching the recent version of Troy with the ubiquitous Brad Pitt (Achilles). Basically gore, thud, and blunder faintly based on the Iliad and some of the Aeneid. Heigh-ho and off to the beaches in Turkey. Speaking of, this movie is one.

What blather. Everyone knows that Patroclus was Achilles lover, they were unrelated (not cousins), and Achilles didn't do girls at all. It is no wonder Achilles lost it when Patroclus was killed by Hector. However, I won't be eating garlic waiting for the denouement of this epiclet. I'll watch it to the end, because I am just plain curious.

Just spent an interesting evening with Christopher Plummer's Barrymore which has been reworked a little from the stage production into a motion picture. I also watched the companion film about the conversion of the play into the movie at the Elgin Theatre in Toronto.

Basically, a one-man show (with an off-stage voice), this shows John Barrymore just before he died when he tried to get a new production of Richard III onto the boards. I suspect it never happened, as Barrymore passed away at about the time frame of the play. He dropped dead during an interview on Rudy Valee's radio show.

I found the play to be riveting. Plummer is a great actor and in the opinion of Helen Mirrin "the greatest actor of our time in the English language theatre". Not bad for a Canadian kid who got his first real break at Stratford Ontario's Shakespeare Festival along with Bill Shatner and many others. I think his Hamlet is better than Olivier's. Certainly much more manly that the rather effeminate performance by Olivier.

Isn't John Berrymore Carrie Fishers dad?

Don't think so. He died in 1942. Carrie Fisher's father is Eddie Fisher as far as I know.

Just watched The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel.

Most intriguing, and with excellent actors. Several plots and subplots including a clash of cultures, and modern youth meets conservative parents. I think it is one of the best dramatic motion pictures I've seen in a long, long time.

One of my favorites would have to be "Kelly's Heros" , star packed and a good story , A war movie not about killing people , not too many like that .

Another would be John Carpenter's "The Thing"

I recently watched Christopher Plummer's one-man show 'Barrymore' about John Barrymore near the end of his career. Riveting.

I only just saw The Avengers movie this week, and it has become my favorite movie, not because I am a shallow trend-jumper, but because I am a long-time superhero geek and the movie was sheer joy for one such as me. Even better than The Incredibles. I also watched a documentary called It Might Get Loud with Jimmy Page, The Edge, and Jack White. That was intensely great, too, but for different reasons, obviously. The respect those guys have for each other is immense, and you can see it when they're talking and playing together.

Just watched Men In Black III. A nice romp, lots of good CGI. Of course sequels never have the impact of the original. This franchise could be continued if they can avoid causal loops. Time travel is a dangerous thing to fool with.

The Hobbit is the prequel to The Lord of the Rings. I also have to recommend the movie. Aside from being a good movie, it's the first 3D movie that didn't give me a headache. (Likely because of the 48fps shooting speed.)

Best Christmas movies of all time:

A Christmas Carol starring Alistair Sim (1951); and

Miracle on 34th Street (1947) with Edmund Gwenn.

There have been remakes of both, but I don't think you can beat those old black and white films. All the technical advances in the world cannot act the way these casts do.

Avatar was my all time favourite but recently MIB 3 and Skyfall have impressed. Also love the Dictator...

And I may be going to see SkyFall soon, how was it? (For anyone who may say "Why didnt you see it earlier?," I just didnt have time to see it earlier.)

Well, I haven't seen any of them, and as far as I am concerned the jury is still out.

3D films don't impress me much because I am monocular.

Hey, cool thread.

My all time favorite film is Empire of the Sun with John Malkovich and Christian Bale. Epic!

Some of my other favs include the following;

The Big Lebowski, Poolhall Junkies, Goodfellas, S.F.W., Point Break, and O Brother Where Art Thou.

I watch movies at a rate of ~4/week on average.

I watched a movie on Christmas Eve I can't recall the name of starring Jimmy Stewart. It took place in Budapest in the year 1940. It was quite entertaining.

I wonder if anyone has seen Prizzi's Honor with Jack Nicholson and Kathleen Turner. It was nominated for 8 or 9 Oscars and won 1 if I recall. I watched it last week and I must say I was rather disappointed.

Notable mention: The Whole Nine Yards. Matthew Perry was hilarious in that movie.

Different generations, different movies. If you ever get a chance to see Gone with the Wind in a theatre setting, go! Somehow, I think you'll find this is rather spectacular, and all those effects are done without CGI. Apparently the burning of Atlanta is really the cleaning off of MGMs back lot.

I just saw The Lorax (the new one) on my mother's slate today. It was pretty good.

--Ocram

Ocram's Razor: Though "more things shouldn't be used than are necessary," they're just too fun to pass up! Expect many verbose arguments from me. I will try to write abstracts before or short summaries after from now on.

Words to live by:
"Now there are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit. But to each one is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good. For to one is given the word of wisdom through the Spirit, and to another the word of knowledge according to the same Spirit; to another faith by the same Spirit, and to another gifts of healing by the one Spirit... But one and the same Spirit works all these things, distributing to each one individually..." 1 Corinthians 4-11

"Do not worry about tomorrow; for tomorrow will care for itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own." Matthew 6:34
"Do not judge so that you will not be judged. For in the way you judge, you will be judged; and by your standard of measure, it will be measured to you." Matthew 7:1-3
