Just saw Man of Steel last night. The way they showed krypton's fate, the history behind Superman himself is all very different than how I got to know it..

I've always been into the styles used in Batman: The Animated Series and Samurai Jack. Speaking of Samurai Jack, yesterday was the 12th anniversary of it's first episode  :D

I just watched the 2011 version of "Rengō Kantai Shirei Chōkan:  Yamamoto Isoroku--Taiheiyō Sensō Nanajūnenme no Shinjitsu" (聯合艦隊司令長官 山本五十六 -太平洋戦争70年目の真実- - "Commander-in-Chief of the Combined Fleet:  Yamamoto Isoroku--The Truth 70 Years After the Pacific War").

I'm a sucker for wartime political and historical dramas, especially when they feature giant battleships with pagoda masts.  Of course, a film like this will always portray the infamous admiral as a tragic figure fighting a hopeless war with the ultimate in Japanese self-sacrificing stoicism, and we necessarily won't get the kind of exhaustive detail of naval strategy that war buffs might like.  Still, we get lovingly detailed renderings of Imperial Navy carriers and battleships sailing in formation and firing in battle.  Indeed, while the storyline is decidedly critical of the war and the politics leading to it, there is quite a bit of cgi aircraft carrier and battleship porn.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=49PypYd-m7E

It will make a good bookend with "Otoko-tachi no Yamato" and even "Space Battleship Yamato."

It was rather amusing ironic to see Abe Hiroshi in the heroically romanticized role of Rear-Admiral Yamaguchi Tamon, whose carrier Hiryū managed to make a brief last stand at the Battle of Midway before being sunk along with the rest of Admiral Nagumo's carrier battle group.  After that tide-turning battle, Admiral Yamaguchi stoically chooses to go down with his ship, supposedly while gazing wistfully at the gleaming moon.  Previously, I had watched Abe in the taiga drama "Yoshitsune" in the role of haunted samurai general Taira no Tomomori, who led the Heike fleet against the Genji clan in the ancient naval Battle of Dan-no-ura.  After the Heike fleet is completely destroyed by the Genji, Taira no Tomomori ties himself to a ship's anchor and throws into the sea to drown along with the rest of his clan.  He had realized the Heike's inevitable defeat after gazing at his Genji rival, super pop idol Tackey, who poses in grand samurai armor showered with the bishie sparkle of glittering golden dust.  No one can defeat an opponent graced by Bishie Sparkle!

4so5.jpg

"Darn, he has Bishie Sparkle...the Fleet is lost...and I'm in love!"

Perhaps also ironically, a few days ago on the anniversary of the atomic bombing of Hiroshima, Japan under the more nationalist administration of Prime Minister Abe officially launched their new aircraft carrier Izumo, their largest warship since World War II.  China is not pleased.

I am happy to mention that one of my good friends had some of his work make the final cut of that film. He is a VFX artist who's been working in the industry for several years and I'm so happy that he has such a prominent work on his resume. I've had many opportunities to watch him work in recent months now that he is back here in Pittsburgh as opposed to New York, where he had lived for much of the time when he was doing said work. I can assure you the final product is far more glamorous than the process.

I finally got to see the Hobbit for the first time. I am very much impressed with how he did the film. Once again PJ pulled it off.

Actually, I always thought 'favourite' movies needed to pass the test of time.  I still hold GWTW as my favourite.  Made in 1937.

I am definitely there opening weekend this coming May.  I've been waiting for a more serious tone to this franchise.

Being older than most of our members, I suppose.  A lot of movies have passed under the bridge to infamy and oblivion.  To be a favourite one has to find it mot only likable but memorable.  I have a rather long list of memorable motion pictures, but GWTW is the one that stands out.  And what do you know, it was made before any of the "wonderous" CGI or FX were available.  MGM burned down their back lot for the Atlanta scenes.  A close second is Casablanca and the Maltese Falcon.  There were actors on the silver screen in those days.  Not very many anymore.

Casablanca was an excellent movie.  Watching it is like watching a modern movie, it's so well done, so beautifully paced.  And how many quotes came from that movie?  How wide was its influence?  That is one of my favorite movies of all time.

Yes, but Rick did not say "Play it again, Sam".  One of the frequent misquotes from the movie.  Just look at that star-studded cast: Bogart, Menjou, Bergman, even Peter Lorre.  Just about everyone who was under contract to the studio at the time.  Some of the WW II movies are examples of great art.

Then there are the John Wayne Pacific war epics.  Great propaganda.

"You played it for her, you can play it for me!  ...  If she can stand it, I can!  Play it!"  I didn't even have to check it.  Okay, for the second line I did, but the first one was delivered in a memorable enough way that I couldn't forget it.

I see I am not the only one who has seen Casablanca.  Some of the motion pictures made between 1935 and 1950 are really fine art.

Got myself into watching some movies, and I was really impressed by Ingmar Bergham's The Seventh Seal, it changed the way I look into artistry.

Who?  Oh, I guess you mean Ingmar Bergman.

Well, try something a little more classical like Casablanca or the Maltese Falcon.  And if you like war movies try The Bridges at Toko Ri or A Bridge Too Far.

Ender's Game the novel I found hard to put down.  At the same time, I can see it being made into a rather shocking horror film for people who haven't read it.  Hope it becomes available on DVD soon, as there are no theatres within reach here.

Saw Escape Plan in theaters several weeks ago. I couldn't turn down a movie that has both Arnold Schwarzenegger and Sylvester Stallone in it and I enjoyed watching it. I would recommend it if you're into action movies.
