Since I am working on a disgusting and dirty city in SC411.gif, I need some inspiration for my expressways. Post what you think is the worst expressway and preferably a link to information on it so I can look at the expressway.

Interstate 95 from New Haven, CT to New York City, NY. Thats the worst road I have ever been on, and for the past few weeks, the southbound lanes have been closed due to an accident involving an oil tanker. The truck flipped over and caught fire. The fire was so intense that it MELTED the overpass it came to rest on, and it needed to be replaced. I think the lanes are open again now.

All freeways in Detroit. They are bad! All you have to do is just cut road funding in your city and, THERE YOU GO. Freeways that look terrible. Maybe someone can create a road surface that has badly painted lanes. There are some exceptions in areas though were the surface is actually nice. Trafficwise, they are okay.

In SimCity, I wish you could put your Sims through a mess by building 90 degree on ramps. They have this one in Ann Arbor, that exits the freeway at a really bad angle. They actually have a warning on the exit sign saying its a difficult turn and that you must take it at 10 mph. Getting on is worse. There is a stop sign and a handy one-way sign indicating that the freeway lanes you are getting onto are only going one way.35.gif' I would have never known! Trying going 0 to 70 mph at a stop sign while completing a right turn. You can't do it! and the exit/entrance ramp needs to be removed. It would be so cool if Sims had to do this.

The infamous Golden Glades Interchange in Miami! Oh man! I-95, Palmetto Expressway, Florida Turnpike, U.S. 441, and S.R. 836 all meet at this crazy place. It's so confusing, i.e. to get from Eastbound Palmetto to Northbound 95, yiu have to practically get off the highway, taking some winding side streets through an industrial area, and get on a new ramp to 95........

“The American city should be a collection of communities where every member has a right to belong. It should be a place where every man feels safe on his streets and in the house of his friends. It should be a place where each individual's dignity and self-respect is strengthened by the respect and affection of his neighbors. It should be a place where each of us can find the satisfaction and warmth which comes from being a member of the community of man. This is what man sought at the dawn of civilization. It is what we seek today.”

wolverine: do you know any sites that are on Detroit highways. I searched for them but I didn't find any.
Apparently I-95 is bad everywhere. Its the same in Philly. Through the suburb of Chester, I-95 reduces to 2 lanes in each direction through the I-476 interchange. At the interchange with US-322 (heading NB on I-95, where US322 is also on I-95), US322 traffic enters on the left and exits on the right in around 1/4 mile. That means that in less that a quarter mile, US-322 traffic has to cross 3 lanes of very heavy traffic! (Luckily, there are planning to do work on the interchange soon, which will probably relocate the US-322 lanes)

    I-540 In Arkansas.

Speed limit 70mph. Average speed in the left lane in light traffic: 60mph.

Why? Bubba in his rusted out pick up has spent 15 minutes trying to pass a semi.

Ive lived in many states, and by FAR Arkansas has the most idoitic drivers I have ever seen. I last came from Michigan, and yes the traffic was harry, but at least you got to go the speed limit at the very least even in heavy traffic.

In Arkansas, it can be clear for miles ahead of you, then all of a sudden this 60mph moving blockade appears in front of you and all you can do is whimper and try your hardest not to get road rage. One time, it was totally clear and I got stuck behind a guy in the left lane doing 40mph...yes thats correct 40mph in the left lane on a 70mph highway! Even worse, was the truck next to him was not going much faster. I almost rear ended him i came up on him so fast.

lets see what other great things have arkansas inbreeders done...
    1) Ive almost got into a head on with an old man who was driving down the wrong side of US-71B in Arkansas.
    2) Average speed going down an onramp to get on 540 is 45mph. Ever try to enter a highway at rush hour at 45mph?
    3) When the onramp is clear, I have actually gotten up to speed and PASSED cars driving on the highway as im coming down the onramp they are going so slow on the highway.
    4) Witnessed bubba lose his entire load of Sod from the back of his pickup and decide to STOP right then and there to go pick it up...yes thats right. STOP in the right lane of the highway.
    5) Witnessed a car miss a curve on the highway and just drive straight off the road and into a barn. (lol They were okay, after which when i was alone, I laughed for about 45 minutes straight)
    6) I-540 being painted at 12:45PM! on a Monday.
And this is all in ONE year.

I-695 during rush hour.  You don't move for 5-10 minutes straight, on a good day.  The speed limit is 55, but i rarely get to 45.  You move about 5 feet, sit for 2-3 minutes, move another 5 feet, sit for a minute, then just when you get frustrated you finally move 100 feet and get all happy then sit again.  Luckily I moved so I don't have to suffer through this anymore.

It has way too much traffic. Especially parts that lead to the midtown tunnel.

EAGCE: Which I-695? I know there is one in Baltimore and New York. The one in Baltimore is bad during rush hour but I didn't think it was that bad.

On my way home from school, I take a city bus down the Red River/Dawson Road stretch, which leads you out if the Downtown North Core of the city. We got stopped at the intersection of TransCanada 11 (the longest street in the world16.gif) 12 times, and spent about 10 minutes trying to get through there. It took so long, the next bus was waiting only a couple hundred meters behind us! The city was going to build an inter change there, but ran out of funds. It has become a real problem, and it is the busiest intersection in Northern Ontario, including Sudbury. If you want to see a picture of this intersection, click on my avitar, click on previous posts, and go to the last page, to see my first post. I have a picture of it!

I-65 N&S bound north of nashville is horrible!!!11.gif11.gif11.gif11.gif its down to 3 lanes with construction on both sides in both directions with barricades right next to you, if you stuck your hand out the windo you would be touching the concrete barricades. there are no emergency lanes for 8 miles. if theres a reck the whol highway gets shut down and your backed up for miles. I travel this to and from work, and this morning the entire north bound section was shut down due to a wreck. This is a good highway to put in your worst town.

I-10 West, Houston.  it has an extreme traffic count ( Not as high as US 59, or even loopp 610 ) but it is undergoing a 10 year construction and widening series, which is a humoungous pain.  Once, it took us an hour to move like 3 miles, and that was in the feeder! ( the highway was worse )  and good thing we left early, because we arrived to the restaurant on time ( If any of ya'll know about the Japanese Sushi restaurant To'dai, which has like several dozen branches thru the US, thats where I went&nbsp2.gif  And it was ultra crowded!

Any Houston Highway under construction is one of the worst!

Also, A few hours ago, a chemical truck exploded on the highway, closing it off for 12 hours ( in fact, I think one way is still closed ) and this was the intersection at the loop- people are probably still waiting there waiting for the lanes to open, and it is midnight )

DT: It was jammed even on the feeder road? I haven't seen that ever. However, in Wilmington where I-95, I-495, and I-295 (8/9 SB lanes total) merge all at once into 4 SB lanes, many people take the C/D road through the RT141 Expressway cloverleaf (at the same site of the merge area) to go around the initial jam.

I think the stretch between highway 427 and Islington Ave is the second busiest in NA (the 401 is something like 1000km, going from Windsor to Montreal, so not all of it is that busy).

There are also parts of the Gardiner Expressway (in downtown Toronto) where there are no merging/acceleration lanes, meaning getting on is really a matter of luck because if someone is right there when you're getting on, there's no room to keep going. The other option is slamming on the brakes, which is a bad idea since you're trying to merge into traffic going around 90 kph.

The condition of the roads is pretty good, and the drivers' stupidity isn't noteworthy.

Damn, I forgot about that on ramp there at Barton Rd. That has to be the most dangerous on ramp I've ever seen. It's terrifying to get onto on football Saturdays.

The mixing bowl in the Metro Detroit area is a terror every day during rush hour. Always an accident. It's an area where I-275, I-696, I-96, M-5, and M-14 converge in about a four mile area. It's the pits. Not to mention many other major roads such as Telegraph and 8 Mile close by or in it and I-75 isn't too far off. It's just a mess in through there.

I would have to say, I-25 Corridor from North Denver to South Colorado Springs (90 miles). Through Denver they are undergoing a major overhaul of the interstate making it 2 lanes through much of the central Denver area. From Denver to Colorado Springs there are so many houseing developments, and it is also being upgraded to 4 lanes. Through Colorado Springs they have started a the Powers Blvd. Loop, to take the half circle around Colorado Springs also they are widing the whole interstae to 3 lanes through out the whole city. One part is a real mess, I-25 at Bejou to I-25 at Cimmirron it is only 1 lane under the Bejou bridge.

    Standby.

I presume an Expressway is the equivelant of a motorway...

    M25 London Orbital is hell-like.
M6 junction 5(I think?) i think is the worst in the country... Gravley Hill Interchange, aka Spagetti Junction....

They're in England. Don't know any in the USA

By far, the worst expressway I ever drove on has to be the A1 stretch from Florence to Bologna in Italy. The road is the oldest expressway in Italy, goes through mountain terrain, with narrow lanes, lots of trucks and very sharp turns.

Really bad. I hope it will get renovated soon.

I have to agree with the statement that I-95 is bad everywhere.  Two weeks ago I was on I-95 in North Carolina, and although the road was in decent shape, this is a highway SCREAMING to be widened. Traffic was literally 75 mph, stop suddenly, 10 mph for 5 minutes, 75 mph again, etc.  This repeated at least 10 times.  And everytime you got past the initial holdup, you wondered what the hell caused it.  So maybe my complaint rests more with moronic drivers, but they make expressways bad too!

The Palisades Interstate Parkway in New York is in generally pretty crappy shape too.  I'm thinking NYSDOT just forgot it exists....

I-91 in Vermont, especially near Brattleboro (I don't know about the rest of it) has to be the worst-maintained interstate I've ever seen, and it isn't even in an urban area.  I mean it would probably be cheaper just to nuke the road and rebuilt it from scratch than maintain it, it's that bad.  That seems to go hand-in-hand with the rest of Vermont's roads though.

lol..All of our Motorways/Expressways/Freeways/Highways are between 4 and 3 lanes each way. The M25 isnt to bad until it gets to Rush Hour, and my experiance of the M1 had been very pleasurable.. I got to leeds from london in only 3hrs!

    Downtown Tampa: I-275 Downtown Exits & I-4
Major Reconstruction all along 275 caused the main downtown exit, Ashly Drive N/S to be closed down, and the expansion of I-4 which will be perpetual until they realize they should build ahead. It's always slow slow traffic at 275 and I4.
Even on a day when no one is on the roads I-4 moves about 5mph to 10mph, but once you get past that it moves normal speed.
Another area is right by my high school. The jerks who live off GUNN HWY don't want it to become a 4 laned road, however in the mornings it takes me an hour to drive 7 miles. Just to get to school, So I leave at 6:20 and arrive at school at 7:20
    Flipping ridiculas.

State Highway 99 in North Central California (by Sacramento) is known for being extraordinary dangerous. In those parts, it's known as the "Blood Highway" and other flattering nicknames :/

In Seattle, traffic gets snarled everyday at the t-intersection of I-5 and State Highway 520 (a floating bridge over Lake Washington). The bridge is a mess (it gets damaged in every storm) and so is the junction.
