Bridges are impossible!

I could really use some help here, because for me bridges are impossible.  Allow me to elaborate on that by using an example.  If you like, please follow along so you can see exactly what I see and maybe then you can say, "OH!  Here is where you are messing up!" because that is really what I need.  Anyway, I create a brand new city on solo mode, under Green Plains > The Old Falls.  A river splits this map in half, so I start the very first road I have to make on the North side of this river making a beeline for the majority of the farming resource which will be used to boost my economy at the start.  Okay, now I have a small avenue leading from the edge of the map to the edge of the major farming area.  Now we want to cross that river because it is where my people will live.  I create a small avenue bridge (using the curved road tool) and connect that to my already existing road and stop it after we have the bridge crossing the river.  Now it is time to turn it back into a road again, go ahead and try to connect a small avenue road to the south side of the bridge now.  Can't do it can you?  Voila!  Bridges are impossible.  I have this problem pretty much everywhere I go to create a bridge, perhaps there is some sort of tactic that I am unawares of that many of you could share?

Short answer, do the tutorial..

Long(er) answer, start the bridge like you did already, cross the river, click once to anchor the end of the bridge then move a little bit inland, hold shift and move your mouse down till the road hits the ground, et voila a working bridge.

Hehe I wish it were that simple 4.gif  I did the tutorial, 5 times to be exact to make sure that I had missed nothing.  I anchored the bridge on both sides of the river and when I do shift and move my mouse down the entire road stays red even after the bridge is trying to go underground, nothing.  No matter what I try nothing works 15.gif  Its disappointing and I am beginning to wonder if it is a bug.

    Try this:

    create two roads per side.

create a bridge (make sure that the road type is the same)

make sure that the curve mode is used

Create the first part: click on the end of the road and click again in another point; then click again to build. Repeat it on the other side

Create the second part: click on the end of the first part (side 1), go to the first part (side 2) and build it.

Do you have a commodore 64? So

    10 create road

    20 start bridge

    .... : )

    I don't think that there's a bug...

The easiest way to do this without getting the "red can't do that" errors is as follows.

Step 1: Create the road on both sides of the river bank first, leaving about an inch of land (depending on zoom level) between the road and the river on both sides.

Step 2: Using the bridge tool in "curved" mode, pull the bridge "from the road" to just past the water line, then click (1 time) to set way-point, then continue to pull to about the center of the river, then double click to build.

Step3: Repeat this for the other side, pull the bridge "from the road" to just past the water line, then click (1 time) to set way-point, then continue to pull to the half built bridge in center of the river, then double click to build it.

I have found this to be the quickest and easiest way to build bridges with the smallest ramps possible without errors. Remember you need to use "curved" option for this to work.

This is what sometimes happens when you try to set a bridge.  Just below the symbol the bridge is incomplete, that is no pier. You could extend the bridge a long way and eventually it would set.  However try this.

    CitiesXL_Game%202009-10-18%2021-22-03-98

Create a small bridge to either side of the river.  No Ceter up on the bridge and put down a small ave.  before you set the second point raise it up using the shift key like on a bridge, then set it.  This will create a ramp.

    CitiesXL_Game%202009-10-18%2021-22-14-28

    Delete the small ave.

    CitiesXL_Game%202009-10-18%2021-23-44-63

If you wish place an intersecting road to connect to.  That is the easiest way.  Now start a bridge at the end of you bridge segment and connect it to the road.

    CitiesXL_Game%202009-10-18%2021-24-15-45

And there is your bidge connection.  Do this on both sides.  This is also a way to cross highways.

I find the best thing is to use the curvey bridge tool, you seem to run into less problems 15.gif Haven't had any major issues myself but haven't tried building cities requiring extensive bridgework yet.

They still didnt fix the highway bridge glitches where it doesnt want to connect to an existing highways.

they also have to make highways and its bridges less expensive.

They also have to change the way u demolish roads and highways because if u want to demolish one part the whole segment goes with it and its annoying.

I can't stress this enough, the straight road tool is broken with bridges. You MUST use the curved bridge tool to get them to co-operate. The only one I've seen that is impossible to build are the highway bridges (provided an already existing highway). You've got to start out fresh and connect the highway after the bridge is built.

I find bridges and tunnels quite fun to make! It was really something I missed in City Life. Okay, I know bridges were in CL, but here in CXL, they're more realistic, and tunnels are da bomb!

They are a bit tricky, but with a little effort, you can build them! I remember it took me about 30 mins to make my first one. Don't despair!

Just keep plugging at it and any more times let us know 4.gif

I use the straight road tool for all my bridges.  Works fine. They all have been large avenue bridges.

Just build the roads first and connect them with the bridge after.

I'm seeing stuff about highways and bridges not working if you build the bridge first but I cannot get them to connect regardless of what order I try them. Am I just SOL if I want to cross a body of water with a highway?

The work around I came up with was to continue selecting to build another bridge, but this one at ground level.  It will appear and act as a regular highway, but may be more costly.  Highways/Freeways  are messed up in the game.  There is a big thread about the Highway Blues, hehehe.

Okay, no matter what I've tried, as the title of the thread states, Bridges are Impossible!!!

They're either too tall, too large, won't adjust to the proper size, and most of the time simply won't allow to be placed! The very times I have had success placing a bridge, it looks like it belongs in 'Giant Land', because it is proportionally way too large compared to all of the other structures in the city.

To me, this is a MAJOR BUG, and needs to be fixed.   If nothing else, there ought to be a 'bridge edit' mode, so once the thing is in place, you can select it, and then readjust the height without accidently deleting it!
