Why do you still play SC4?

I'll start out with a couple reasons I still play:

There's no 'better' builder
The active online community

For the last several years I haven't really wanted to play SC4.  I hate that I have to choose which rules to break and to what extent.  If I use money trees, demand multipliers, garbage chutes etc. then what's the point of playing?  How do you even play without NAM? Where do you draw the line?

Is your goal simply to make a nice looking city?  Is that even a 'game'?

For me, it's partly nostalgia - I remember playing the original SimCity in 1989 on my Commodore computer. Five years later, I remember spending hours and hours of summertime playing the second, and I even dabbled a bit in the third incarnation a while back. I don't play as often as I used to, but the thing that keeps me interested is coming up with interesting and different custom buildings.

GOOD TEXTURES ARE MADE, NOT FOUND.
(I get tired of saying that in BAT threads.)

"Never keep up with the Joneses. Drag them down to your level." - Quentin Crisp
"I believe in talking behind peoples' backs. That way, they hear it more than once." - Fran Lebowitz
"Ordinary morality is for ordinary people." - Aleister Crowley
"No one ever said on their deathbed, 'Gee, I wish I had spent more time alone with my computer.' " - Dani Bunten Berry

For me at least right now its because, I've play'd sim city 4 off and on since it came out. And just 2 weeks ago I got RS and started downloading mods.

And at this point there is so much to do!, I love making a beautiful yet working city. And i'll probably try to fill up my region, I'll probably stop playing when FFXIV comes out, i'm a MMO'er at heart, but right now there is nothing to play.

I still play because it's a great game. I love being able to design my own city layouts and have people live the way I think they should. I love being able to choose what I want in my city and where I want it. Do I want free health care? Sure, why not? Do I want fire protection? No way, Sims can put out their own fires. The ability to control almost anything is what I like. Also, I've played the CitiesXL beta for about a month, month and a half, and I was very dissatisfied with what I saw. The graphics in SC4 were far ore suburb and the "no grid thing" is nothing special. You end up building a grid because all the lots are squares!

Basically, SC4 is the better game out of all of the cities builders I have seen.

It was never really about the game for me. Even with the older versions, but more so with SC4. I prefer to make the city of my dreams and anyway of achieving that is fine by me. Occasionally I will do a U-Drive-It mission just for a little variety, or maybe start a little fire but quickly extinguish it. I have always been fascinated by cities and urban design, but SC4 is great for making scenic rural areas as well... something I've experimented more with in the last year or so. I still play the game now, mostly because I only discovered all this great custom content last summer. Before I found ST, I had never even met another person who plays SimCity. Not one. I honestly didn't know it was such a popular game!

I still play because of many reasons:

1) I think I haven't built my biggest city yet.

2) I think I haven't built my most beautiful city yet.

3) There are always little things to fix.

4) Custom content, everyday I download something, I learn something new.

5) Simtropolis.

6) My CJ.

7) ...

I play because it's simply the best and prettiest SimCity out there. Not the fastest, SC2K can do that.

Unfortunately, my grand dreams--a perfect city with lots of custom buildings--have hit a few road blocks, starting with a pretty slow computer. I'm trying to bide time, BAT buildings, create a CJ...but even those are not good...as I have some time issues (see signature), lack of BAT ability, SC-playing computer not the same as Internet computer...

~ COMING SOON! Exciting new projects! ~

I still play simply because I still have fun playing the game. Sure, there are sometimes where I get a little board. I'll take a break from SC4 for awhile, but it just keeps calling me back. 9.gif

I play because the possibilities seem endless. You can do just about anything you want. I take breaks too but then I am burning 8 hours on this again. I think this game is more of a hobby to me. I remember I was playing one day and my nephew asked me, "So, how do you win?" It was hard t explain to him that you dont win. You just build and maintain. Thats why I do not consider this a game anymore. Everybody wants a Simcity 5. I think they can do it here with all of the stuff that these guys come out with. Look what they did with Simmars, all these modds and and buildings. You will never find a better deal for $19.99. Anywhere! Cities XL is just a tease to me. We all want simcity 5 so bad that we are willing to try anything at this point. I think that the NAM stuff is only going to get better. Come out with ploppable interchanges for the RHW and some other tweeks to transportation , and we have Simcity 5.

I play SimCity4 because i always get flashbacks of fun when playing, the limitless designs. Sometimes in a dream a map just pops in my head, and it just feels so awesome getting it out on computer. And the music--that's also a nostalgic prize that comes along with it!

I play Sim City 4 still for a TON of reasons...

a) The unlimited possibilities

b) I haven't made my best city yet

c) I haven't built my prettiest city yet (Hope to get in on making a somewhat replica of New York with the BAT Team5.gif)

d) Simtropolis and it's awesome STEX exchange.

e) When I get an idea, good or bad, BAM! it's on the game.

f) An architechual firm is asking me to mail them some pics of my latest cities! (SEH Architechual) And I'm not even 18!

g) Cities XL fell flat on it's face.45.gif I might try out Tropico 3, but it won't replace SC4.

h) Music. Morning Commute's nice.

i) Definitly a hobby of mine.

j) NAM!

The List goes ON and ON and ON...

I play because its the best city building game ever. Hands down. City building fascinates me a whole lot. Like others have said it's no longer a game but a hobby. It's always fun and new in it's own way. it never really gets old. At the moment I am not playing because I am trying to get a new computer, but i still come on her to see what's new. This software is fascinating and all you guys who put stuff on here are great. I appreciate you all.

Its more of a hobby, I'm really into making model railroads, but I can never afford to create them. SimCity is the next best thing, and its really flexible at the same time.

The value of the game is that a "WIN" is not defined by anyone but YOU.. If YOU want to do something and you achieve it or sometiems even if you fail at it!! (by whatever means and however you want to do it.). YOU win .. If you "cheated" you only cheated yourself.. no one else cares because it is not a zero-sum game.. ie because you "won" doesn't make me "lose".. I only lose if I SAY I LOSE .. based on what it is I'm trying to achieve.. and of course there is much more to it than the GAME.. there is the community, the lots, the designs, the game mods, the "curiousity factor" (ie.. "how does that work anyway") .. etc... in other words its only over when your imagination runs out.. not because you "won" the game

The way you "win" at this "game" is the $19.99 you spent for it and the simtropolis community. Another reason why I love this hobby.

I still play because after all these years of playing, I'm still not completely bored. I just started getting into building custom regions (sucking at it currently), but it's brought a new found excitement to the game.

I'm hoping to turn it more into a hobby than just a game.

That is a good question.

I don't know why I find city planning and city building fun. I remember when I was a little kid I used to build a city for my Hot wheels, and not using those pre-made Hot Wheel streets. Uh uh, the floor was my roads, and every item I could get were my buildings: shoeboxes,  2 liter bottles, sofas, etc. I would sometimes make elevated roads with those pre-made Hot Wheel streets on top of toy building blocks and even make a freeway with wide, flat picture books.

Since I'm too old to be playing with toy cars now,18.gif I think Sim City's the next best thing. I remember getting SC2000 and spending countless hours in the Urban Renewal Kit. Then Sim City 3, but not as much since it had no free-plop Urban kit. And now, Sim City 4, with all the great content I recently found out about. =D

I *play* because i find it cool to design your own little corner of the world, to govern and build your own city.

I *still* play because again there's no other quality city sim, and i find it a near perfect combo when paired with RH and custom content
