I still play it fairly often. My best is 1.5 million people, and most of my cities are 1.2 million +

I never grew cities normally. I spent a hell of a long time plopping an entire large city, skyscrapers, factories, houses, everything, mainly because I sucked and whenever I zoned stuff, the buildings abandoned near instantly. Two things I really miss, which should have been included in SC4, were the disaster siren - Set it off and watch the people go running! - and the riot disaster.

The most i ever got was about 100,000 people, i was never "really" into it. (really explains my addiction to SC4)  1.gif

My best city was 350,000 not much... I do remember when we all thought it was great...

SC4 is much better though...

I still play SC3K more often than SCS

Well here is a picture of my urban megagiant, Parasanti. As I've mentioned, no cheating was involved, meaning no hacking, using plop buildings, using trainers, nothing. It is purely a natural city and one of the few to be built this way.

5.3 million residents - hard to beat:

    ParasantiDisplay.jpg

You can download the city at www.simcitypages.com where most of my work is. More information can be found at www.sc3000.com/forum. The city actually has a full set of educational, health, recreational, and safety facilities, with no overcrowding. Without the facilities, tests have proven that the city can reach a maximum residential population of 5.7 million, with a total population of 8.8 million.

As of now, I am in the process of creating an even larger city, one that will break 6 million residents by the end of March 2009 - the Holy Grail to the absolute max. It'll take me some time to build. It'll be called Magnasanti 2.gif

Hopefully it will truly be unbeatable once complete.

I forgot how SC3 looked. After downloading so many buildings from STEX, SC3 looks so primitive. I didn't play SC3 nearly as much as I would have liked. My largest city was just under 1 million.

I played it about a year and a half ago on my old XP laptop. I just tried installing the old classic on my new Vista comp, but it gives me a darn error message and doesn't get past the initial install screen.

My largest city? I was never into skyscraper forests, so we're looking at somewhere south of that magical million peeps mark. They had your CBD, midrise developments, and single-family neighborhoods. I miss the old game, but SC4 rocks my socks.

Mine was about 700,000, but it was realistic thought using SC3000U.

One of things I loved SC3KU, is the amount of BATs and the simpliy of it is.

I have Simcity 3000, but it's really scratched up! Does anyone know if you can buy it anywhere?

    Thanks!

O.K. thanks! You're the most helpful person I've met on Simtropolis! I'm gonna name a city after you!

Try Amazon.. they have it in several forms as I recall. If you get it get the SC3KU (unlimited) as it contains a development kit which allows you to customize to some extent. Further I'd suggest that you get in some "collection" where you also get the newest SC4Delux or Rushhour along with it for about the same price.. I think I recall seeing the set for about $20US

I had SC3000 and spent hours and hours transforming and coming up with unusual formations. I never had more than 1 mil.pop but that was mainly because I got bored and would start over. The biggest thing that was cool for me was that you could import your SC2000 cities, so if you had a great city , you could see it with the "upgraded"graphics and bats. Of course it was a lot easier to create mega cities and getting rich sims to live in them...just had to zone 6x6 and build plenty of parks around them! After getting into SC4 , I sold my copy on E-bay...didn't get much though 4.gif

For me, 3k feels a bit like a "lost" game. Despite the graphical upgrade, it felt somehow "colder" than SC2k; little touches like the long "love letter" to cities you got when you queried the library in 2k were absent. And this may be petty, but I hated the fact the signs were gone and it constantly irritated me. The gameplay was much more involved (3k deserves credit for introducing concepts such as neighbor deals and business deals, medium density zoning, landmarks, and a host of other things which SC4 would elaborate upon) and I appreciated bigger cities, but I just never loved it the way I did 2k. There could be some nostalgia involved, too: I played 2k in high school, in the prime of my gaming life (along with Civ 2 and Tie Fighter on the PC and Link to the Past and Super Mario World and Final Fantasy games which were actually good on the SNES). By the time I had a computer that could run 3k, I was in college and more concerned with schoolwork and chasing girls.

And then of course SC4 came along and just crushed 3k graphically, while building on the complexity just enough for me to feel like I could actually create a realistic-feeling city, especially after the modders got their hands on it.

I'd have to put 2000 above 3000, mostly because i just prefer it's style (especially as regards music... i hate the 3000 music, i reckon 2000 had the best music of all the titles) Also i would agree 3000 was 'colder', a bit like how i feel towards newer episodes of The Simpsons which have that more rigid animation style.

Quick Tutorial on Bridges in SC3K, which is actually harder then SC4 in those terms, as SC3K requires more space per end then SC4 and later:

    1. Underground: Do not place water pipes or subway lines anywhere within 6 tiles of each end, or 2 tiles of each side, or you will get that message.

    2. Ground Level: Make sure the area within 2 tiles of each side of the bridge is cleared, and do not have roads, power lines, or buildings within 6 tiles of each end of the bridge

    3. Applies to both views: Do all other construction (roads, subway lines, power lines, rail tracks, buildings, water pipes) after you have finalized the bridge placement.

Trick Ive learned: If you drag the highlight to the absolute minimum (4 grid lines on each end), in other words, not connecting it to existing roads or whatever, you can narrow the space on each end to 5 tiles, even though the bridge will either not be connected or if your roads or rails are exactly 6 tiles away, they will connect automatically upon bridge completion.

    Tutorial - Water Pumps:

    1. Must be placed next to a body of water, preferably fresh water so you don't have to build the extra desail plant. Best advice I can give you is have a river going through your city and place most of them along the remote parts of the river, or in hide-away parts of your city where zones or other buildings will not fit

    2. A power plant, mainly the early ones, can only sustain so many pumps. Think 10 pumps to 1 coal plant or 12 pumps to 1 gas plant and you will still have enough power for zoning. T

    Tips:

This might sound like overkill, but for every 30 pumps, build 1 water treatment plant. I had a couple times where I had water pollution even though I already had a treatment plant in place but that was because that one was overtaxed. Remember, putting a landfill or other garbage related facility near a water treatment plant defeats it's purpose (personal experience). Do not be afraid, especially in dense industrial zones, to change the treatment plant/pump ratio to 1 for 15 or even 1 for 10. Always better to be overly prepared then run into trouble later, especially as your city gets bigger.

Getting things to come online quicker is easy, just set the simulator to swallow mode and hit play then pause after 5-10 seconds.

    Did you know?

    In 1996 (1996!!), Simcity 3000 was 3d. A cities XL 13 years ago....

(SimCity 3000 had parking for cars in streets...)

    simcity3d.jpg

    simcity3d2.jpg

Then Maxis discovered that nobody could have a PC that could handle that 3d engine in 1996, so they did something like SimCity 2000.

No way! That's a different game, I think. That's not right.

Anyway, I was, like, six, so I didn't understand a lot. I once got, like, 50,000 people, but that's all.

    SC4 dominates!!!!

    Hi there!

with all this issue around Cities XL I was feeling nostalgic of SC3000. I would like to play it again for a while and download BATs from the official site but I don't have a key to register http://simcity3000unlimited.ea.com/us/guide/

does anybody have a key or user account to share?

    thanks!

For to one is given the word of wisdom through the Spirit, and to another the word of knowledge according to the same Spirit; to another faith by the same Spirit, and to another gifts of healing by the one Spirit... But one and the same Spirit works all these things, distributing to each one individually..." 1 Corinthians 4-11
