Brad2.jpgBrad: I think I found the reason for the elimination of the post bug.

Brian2.jpgBrian: They all crawl inside of this big capacitor and get zapped.

Brad2.jpgBrad: And the inductor keeps the current steady to keep the site from going out.

Brian2.jpgBrian: Might be why the site kept going down before...

Brad2.jpgBrad: It wasn't installed yet, so when a post bug got zapped, the site would need to be reset...

Brian2.jpgBrian: You can see all the post bugs in the picture, all broken down into a white goo.

Huh, I assumed that my internet was the reason for the faster load times.

I didn't know we switched over yet.

That was why we had the overnight outage the other day.

I wonder, will there be any visual changes to the forum once the upgrade is finished? quote>

It has been confirmed that the "upgrade" is ST 6.0, and there has never been a version upgrade without a dramatic visual change...

Whoh, We're already on the 6.0 server? WOOT!

Any way, I noticed on the older thread that Dirk appeared, but does that mean that the image that elemental posted will be the appearence of the Simtropolis site?

Brian2.jpgBrian: Yes, they had to install the inductor sometime!

I've been wondering this... what service does Simtropolis use? By which I mean; who designed this site? For example, SCJU was done by Joomla!, and SC4D uses Simple Machines.

I don't actually plan to make my own (that would be very ambitious!), I'm just wondering. 2.gif

The forum software is a modified version of FuseTalk, but the rest of the site, as far as I know, is completely of dirk's creation without any outside assistance.

I believe he does web design or something along those lines for a living, hence why he can just do it himself: he knows how and has the resources.

Well, this site is definately much faster17.gif

I wonder what the primary color(s) will be.

So are we at about 5.5 now? (I know we're on the 6.0 server now, but I'm talking otherwise).

Well, I wouldn't say anything for sure.  Perhaps the new speed of this site will remain the same by the time 6.0 rolls along, perhaps not.  Its possible ST could see a further increase in speed.

As for this being ST 5.5 or something right now, that I do not know.  There have been numerous server upgrades since the time 5.0 came out, so if you counted those as "0.1" upgrades then perhaps we are at 5.8, 5.9, or something similar.  Only drik, the official source, can say for sure.

I've been here long enough to have seen the change from 4.0 to 5.0 first hand, and it was a total reconstruction of the site and its appearance.  If the upgrade to 6.0 is anything like the upgrade to 5.0, we are going to probably see similar effects.

Wow, I just screamed into Anduin Valley Revisited in less than 30 seconds!!  I used to take the dog out while I was waiting for it to load, but now he'll have to wait.  So all I have to say is:

all around the country coast to coast,

people always say what do you like most,

    I don't wanna brag i don't wanna boast,

I always tell 'em I like toast.

    yeah TOAST yeah TOAST

i get up in the mornin' bout six AM,

have a little jelly have a little jam,

take a piece of bread put it in the slot,

push down the lever and the wires gets hot,

    i get toast.

    yeah TOAST yeah TOAST

now there's no secret to toasting perfection,

there's a dial on the side and you make your selection,

push to the dark or the light and then,

if it pops too soon press down again,

    make toast.

    yeah TOAST yeah TOAST

when the first caveman drove in from the drags,

didn't know what would go with the bacon and the eggs,

must have been a genius got it in his head,

plug the toaster in the wall,

    buy a bag of bread,

    make toast.

    yeah TOAST yeah TOAST

oh wee monsieur bonjour cool cat,

    uh huh croissante du bagette,

    maurice zha vaulzey effeil tower,

    o wee maria bagette vouze,

    FRENCH TOAST FRENCH TOAST

in chicago around the Bob and Tom show

    YEAH TOAST

Also bear in mind that software versions don't work like actual numbers. The first digit advances when it's a brand new version, whenever that may be - so you can go straight from version 3.2 to version 4.0. A change of the second digit means a significant upgrade of an existing version, such as from 2.3 to 2.4... and no, 9 is not the limit. You can have version 2.10 (which you must recognize is not the same as version 2.1), 2.11. 2.12... as far as you need to go.

As for Simtropolis, upgrades of existing versions have never been given specific numbers. Strictly speaking, every time the site's taken down for a minor upgrade, the version should change. But we haven't been doing that. Otherwise we'd be on Simtropolis 5.5.9 or something like that right now. What we really talk about is just talk about Simtropolis 5, with the ".0" on the end for decorative purposes.

I remember the 4 to 5 upgrade. That was around Jan-Feb 2006, correct? The site was down roughly a week or two.

Like half of the stuff on STEX seemed to either be lost, unaccessable, or unsearchable after the upgrade. I remember the whole ludicrous thing where somewhat wanted all re-uploaded files to first have permission from their creators, naturally half of them being no longer active on the site.

I still remember having to secretly PM people the zip files of Marrasts' Sea Walls. "Wheres u download those kewl Seawalls, OMG why dontt the STEX work its broken"

Another random thought, I'll have had the same character in my avatar for 3 years now 3.gif

Hooray for Pazu. No need to change now.

Still looking forward to the change. Although I like the current color scheme.

The next one better be at least 10% more cooler* than this one.

*Intentional. Look up the reference yourself!

End of February into March, I think.  The site went down for the upgrade the day after I registered, in fact. 18.gif

I just bought some mint flavored apple jelly for my toast. I wonder if it will be as good as the jalapeño jam I once bought (good with peanut butter BTW).

@Duke87: well, the .0 does add a certian aesthetic quality to the site's name.

I have been through two changes like this on other sites. On one of them, the site was down for what seemed like an eternity. I don't remember how long the other one was down for, but the wait can seem like forever. But long waits not withstanding, the change will be well worth it.
