Boeing is made of every possible kind of win, and I am very happy for their astounding success with this product. Not much more to say, the 787 is a great plane at the right time and brings civil aviation firmly into the 21st century.

Meanwhile, Airbus continues to be plagued by delays and bad decisions, and their direct competitor to the 787, the A350, is still a drawing board sketch. Just goes to show the importance of running an airplane manufacturer for the bottom line instead of national pride.

Now for the really important question.

When's someone going to render a prop of this bad boy so I can use it in my city's airports? 9.gif

@Sirithil: PM pilotdaryl...my bet is that he has one already underway, but the best way to know sure is asking him as he is one of the resident airplane/airport experts.

I think it's excellent! I'm glad to see Boeing is leading the way once again. Sure, the Airbus was impressive just to be impressive, but the Dreamliner could actually revolutionize the airline industry. Plastic composites instead of aluminum? Fascinating! And has anyone seen the inside of this airplane? The inside reminds me of Las Vegas. 10.gif Lastly, this thing can use less fuel for a longer distance which is always a win-win in my book. 1.gif

I saw pictures of the inside and was like 6.gif.  There's a lot fewer seats than normal, but imagine the legroom and ability to recline! 9.gif  In the pictures I saw, the chairs looked like 21st century Lazyboy's. 3.gif  Speaking from the technical side, the 787 is a testament to a lot of engineering skill.  My only wish is that I could fly in one of these things without having to wait years for them to become industry standards.

Well, I guess it is a step forward.  Frankly, I think a dirigible airship for people who are not in a frantic rush would be the more "green" alternative.

hym...

Actually the video only showed First and buisness class, the place where the majority of us will NOT fly in.... Cattle class will be 9 across, so it is going to be 3-3-3 layout. It'll be similar to any other aircraft we fly in.

As well those seats were designed by Boeing to show customers mock up what it CAN look like, it doesn't mean airlines will have that exact seat in their aircraft. Remember when the A380 came out and people said there would be shopping malls, swimming pools, casinos, etc etc, so far no airlines opted for that. Emigrates is even planning a 10 across 3-4-3... I wouldnt want to be seated in the middle of the 4... Ouch.

Micah-

The A380 is also revolutionizing as the 787. I am a Boeing fan, but to say the A380 is not revolutionizing would be incorrect. It has many many new features and technologies. As well the double ddeck is a wonder in all by itself, Imagine the designing phase when they had to create a wheel structure strong enough to withstand that HUGE beast POUNDING on the pavement of the runway at 120+ MPH. As well as the second floor support to keep it from collapsing as well. I would say the 380 is equally impressive, they started designing it back then in the 1985-8* I do not remember the exact year. As well as they will have 5+ cameras placed around the aircraft for the captain to steer it.

Just take ONE look at this,

http://www.airliners.net/open.file/0989940/M/

As well as the very noticable wing bend to hold up the engine weight,

http://www.airliners.net/open.file/1214542/M/

This is one impressive beast as well.

YEA they finally rolled out the 787--when I took the Boeing tour back in March they told me it took 3-4 days to make a 787--thats fast!  Still that 787 looks quite short when compared to other planes...

PM pilotdaryl...my bet is that he has one already underway, but the best way to know sure is asking him as he is one of the resident airplane/airport experts.quote>

Lol it's nice to have my name mentioned once in awhile but the plane I am actually working on is a 777.  I may do the Boeing 787 provided I have the time to do it--I already have another plane that I want to do...

The Boeing depot in San Antonio will be modifying three dozen 787s starting next year for the military, with commercial airliner orders pending... for now.

About time. All those old 747s need replacing.

Boeing is actually coming out with a new 747... the 747-8 which applys the same technology from the 787 to the 747 but on a much bigger scale 9.gif

The A380 is impressive and shiny, yes, but there's still only 35 airports on the planet that can handle it, and most of THOSE only one at a time and/or at offpeak hours. Airlines are better off buying the 747-8 and using their existing gates. And if you do cargo runs like FedEx and UPS and such, you've gotta go with the 747-8F... Airbus cancelled the freighter A380.

On the interior... every airplane ever released has had ridiculously impressive 'model suite' interiors designed to wow passengers and no airline ever installs them. At least on the 787 the massive windows and the nifty mood lighting come standard.

Pilotdaryl, a 777 will make me happy for now bout I would very, very much appreciate a 787 4.gif Whenever it's convenient for you!

    Pilotdaryl-

It is more like 3-4 days to ASSEMBLE the planes since parts are made from all over the world. No plane can be made from stratch in 3 days. Boeing flies all the part to Everett Field then when all the part is there, then yes 3-4 days to assemble, not really amazing since its like a puzzle, just put slot a into slot b then you got a plane.

    How deep-

That infomation is incorrect. Boeing is sending their FIRST 7, 787, there to solve the weight issue and flight testing so the assembly line in seattle is not interuptted. Makes sense since you dont really want a 787 taking up space at their plant and interuppting operations. They are sending the first 7 there since they are overweight and they have to figure out how to trim the weight off.

As well as the military has NOT ordered any 787.

I would pay good money to hop around in an airship.19.gif The extra time it took would be insignificant compared to having to sit in cattle class with absolutely no space to put your legs.

I don't know why but i wouldn't feel comfortable on one of these cause of the high carbon composites ratio.  I just hope they've scrutinized everything3.gif I've watched too many  shows that link plane crashes to the carbon composite tail wings on airlines.

The interiors are sure impressive, but yeah, such has always been idealized marketing mock-ups. Ever see the sexy mock 1960s and 1970s interiors of Boeing's supersonic plane, back in the days when you dressed in Sunday best for the airline flights, or even the vastly touted roominess of the first 747s? Think of those nice car commercials with the sexy new sportscar racing through the forest and mountains, when in truth all of us buying it will be sitting in highway traffic during a hot afternoon rushhour. Leg room means nothing before payload and fuel costs. Delays will have us sitting on the runway trapped for hours next to the seats with the screaming kids while the cabin's air conditioning and mood lighting is turned off to conserve power, though I guess that would be better than the countless hundreds of poor packed souls trapped in the A380 behind us, with all its passengers clawing at each other for turns at the overflowing potty. Oh, and they'll also be out of coffee! Aaagggghhhhh!!!

It's about time that "Port San Antonio," the privatized and commercialized former Kelly Air Force Base with its sprawling tarmacs and air logistics and support facilities, finally gets some major non-military work. Only 11 are contracted so far to come, with the first due here in Texas in February of 2008, for finalizing interior electrical and wiring before being sent to customers. The first plane should be completed in May 2008, and it is hoped that a job well done will bring further 787 support work this way.  Errr, just don't use San Antonio's refurbishment of the official plane of the President of the People's Republic of China as a reference, hehe (CIA agents within the contracted support company loaded it with eavesdropping devices; with bugs hidden even in the Jiang Zemin's onboard bedroom headboard).

However, I too would much rather see Lufthansa's new giant Graf Zeppelin 3 make regular dirigible flights between here and Frankfurt, oogling Manhattan out of the openable picture windows. The zeppelin flight itself would be the best part of the trip.

To me, the only exciting thing about this is that maybe someone in the community will make a new model!

BTW, on that picture of first class... I would hate to be that guy in the very middle. That is worse than an aisle seat, it is a double-aisle seat!

To me the 787 look like a great thing to fly in with the luxury interior. But the material to make the plane is something that I hope to see influence more environmentally friendly advance ways of transport. I mean yeah yeah, hydrogen vehicles and all their cleanliness is fine but isn't it really just energy and water mixed together? Correct me if I am wrong but doesn't the process of creating hydrogen creates pollution. I just hope, not to string off topic here that companies can create something that creates less or hopefully no pollution.

But I'll be looking forward to riding one of those 787s since Canada has ordered ....30+ or something like that.

Nice! The first class looks awesome, although none of the normal population will ever be there... I personally don't really like the nose; it looks a bit funky pointing down like that.

The 787 is a beautiful aircraft and I am am happy to say got to have a nosy in the craft when I was with the Air New Zealand entourage that got front row seats along with Nippon Airways durring the display.

Yes it looks like something out of Star Trek (ironically I am listening to First Contact) and am aware of the Economy Class syndrome.

Air NZ will take delivery of the second generation of 787 later on than the first generation 787.

State of the art yes, revolutionary yes, awe inspiring yeah but the A380 is too even though its flawed

As with Hydrogen as a fuel source from water - the only pollution should be water vapour and maybe some ion charged water but nothing else to my knowledge

Listening to some of the stories of economy class flying - good god that puts you off flying - god bless business class (yes Im a snob and fly business class where I can)

Can't wait to fly in one of these 3.gif

he he, those turned out to be put there by Chinese secret services on orders by some rivaling politicians to, among other things, make sure Jiang will retire when he promised and no new Shanghai crony will move up the ladder to the detriment to groups from other provinces.
So I think it is typical to blame USA for anything and everything in the world. Trait producing very happy smiles in secret agencies all around the world – no doubt!

Is that how it ultimately turned out? Hehe. I last remember the public embarrassment as spies and front agencies were seemingly outed left and right at the poor hapless contractor by excited local news reporters on the scoop while mysterious personnel and technicians with shadowy backgrounds went unaccounted for. Lots of cloak-and-dagger finger-pointing, which for the local citizens was really entertaining to watch. Of course, it all suddenly dropped out of the news. Uh oh, maybe we shouldn't be posting comments like these...

owenluby's comment makes me think: Xbox...on the planes...you know, that's not bad!
