Look at the towers mainly to get an idea on these blobs of color.. Like the one in 10 new screenshots, look how poor their fog effects are, and how bad the textures are normally.

After seeing the screen shots they posted I sighed and instantly understood that my greatest fears had been realized. The new "Sim Societies" will be nothing more than a society sim. I specifically avoided the "Sims" series because that does not interest me. This new Sim City looks to be a way for "Sims" players to interact together online in user-generated societies. *sigh* Makes me want to give myself an air bubble embolism with a dirty AIDS infested meth needle.

Gee... sounds like you could use a happy pill. 3.gif

I play the Sims, but the whole idea of society seems more complicated than the current play of SC4. I liked playing Tropico, which is kind of a political city-building game, so maybe it might be kind of similar? I dont know... all I can hope is they do something about those ugly candy canes and fairy tale crap... or at least don't make it a necessity.

It's not necessary. Sure you might build a museum or even a chocolate factory, but unless you city is full of them you won't get candy canes (at least that's the impression I've been getting from the previews and stuff).

My reaction was simple: I was disappointed. I actually abandoned any thought of buying the game once I heard of CU (I bet they timed that on purpose). I really expected more. I really love the idea that they tried to do something different for a change. But that they had to abandon the basics of a good city simulator game... well, I hope they learn something from this.

Maybe, it's sure SCS is a really different game than previous ones from the Sim City family. Was it really possible to make a really different game like this, including all the features there is in SC4  ? I'm having a little hard time to get the clue on this, and all i can get in at the time would have a really weird gameplay, with really complex menus and management issues, which may cause headaches for most people ... not really what a entertainment software developper you want to lead to 4.gif

Societies is going to be a great game. Without a doubt.

BUT, my true opinion can only be stressed with the fact that I've put up a petition to raise awareness on he lack of commercial interest in micro-management games.

They are dying off left and right because they are difficult to create and market, but so were they also back in the 80's when they started the evolution of the gaming concept with Sim City and the likes.

So I urge you to join in and drop a signature

Again, I mean or say no evil about Societies, I'll most likely even buy it, as I did Railroads in memory of Railroad Tycoon. But whether or not I will be happy, only time can tell.

Cheers, Flix

This is not Sim City!

As a fan of SC since its first version, I refuse myself to call it Sim City.

Just another dissapointment EA delivers... It's unbeliavable how they manage to screw up great games.

I really hope this game becomes a total failure.

For sure SCS concept is like a "think different" from other SimCity games. Hoping the game to be a failure ? What is the point, since a commercial failure of a game can compromise or at least delay the coming of others from the same software developer/editor ... I think trying to do something different is necessary in order to make games evolve. What about always making all the games the same, thinking something like "oh, anoher racing game ? " , or "another spy, FPS, flight simulation game ? " ? Sometimes, editors dare doing someting different, risking a flop, or a colossal hit. Games like Civilization, the Sims, and of course the first Sim City succeeded, daring to release games based on a concept that was never (not exactly for the sims, though), made before. Just think that i've read somewhere that the game "the sims" was close to be cancelled seven times before it was released ... and then became the incredible success we know. So i think we shouldn't blame those who try to innovate on game, what would be the present if a horde of people rushed on maxis guys, throwing then stones and yelling then they're morons making the first SimCity, finally making them giving up the project, humm ? 2.gif

see - i get what you say about innovating the game to make it more appealing as a new release...but to throw everything out the window and slap the franchise name on it? kinda harsh to me....

if games that steadily progress don't sell well...then why are there so many madden games for the game consoles?  apparently they do sell!

I'm astounded by this game. I won't buy it even if it was good. They destroyed a game, I mean come on, EA won't go broke if it fails it will simply send them the right message so that they aren't stupid when they ruin another genre. I am however greatly looking foward to cities unlimited! I think the genre will be saved by them and Sim City will be relegated to the ash-heap of history. Sounds harsh I know but from a marketing perspective they really dropped the ball by not paying attention to the niche gaming community.

Sim City Societies has completely mutilated the Sim City Series. Zoning is a central part of the SimCity Series and micromanaging the city in many places was challenging and fun. They have made SC:S to be a cash cow with no respect for the game as it was.  'the original method of gameplay was extremely fun and even though it was challenging to learn the game was extremely fun.  IT seems the only thing that EA is trying to do is to maximize profits . However this may backfire as loyal fans will turn away from this. I am thouroghly disgusted by this mutilatation of the Sim City Series. If this game is not as profitable as expected hopefully Tilted Mill will learn a lesson. Even if the gameplay was like the original games they would probabably be able to sell it. Maxis did it right and now its being messed up.

Looks a bit like Rollercoaster Tycoon. That's good for Rollercoaster Tycoon but bad for SC.

Also looks small. No huge cities...

Last point appears the lack of realism. Orwellian-style cities? Come on!

I disagree, there will be a Sim City 5, but it won't be done by Maxis or EA or tilted mill, I know all the same. But I think a new company will take the place of it. I'm rooting for Monte Cristo, but whoever does it right will win. There is still a demand for a realistic citybuilding game.

I almost agree with everyone. Im a HUGE will wright FAN! i lvoed his simtowers, and even play sometimes still the old simchopter and simcars..are whatever its called for simcity 2.

I think what would make this game better, is by not calling part of the simcity franchise.Cause, considering the fact that has nothing in it at all that ties it to any MAXIS simcity game. I personally like the design and thought of the game, when you take in the perspective of being a completly diffrent game.

Not a simCity. Now, if EA or MAXIS is trying to call this SIMCITY 5...?..... then i think that is a very upsetting statement that EZ NEEDS TO RECANT.

This is not a simcity game. Considering that WIll as nothing to with.It does encourage me that it dosnt ellude to being SIMCITY 5 on the box,..but rather...Simc CIty socieites.

Because this means that perhaps when will finishes SPORE..which i think is an completly awsome concept. SPORE could be more aptly called simcity 5.

maybe he might come back and work on the REAL simcity 5. HE really is doing some good work. and deserves alot of comendation. Too many people here are trashing will. but i dont really think its wills fault...contracts and things need to be fullfiled and hes only one man. but i hope he'll come back and give us one more simcity 5. And we'll know its the TRUE PREDESCOR because it will only add to the concepts already there, and make it mroe chalenging for us lovers of sims.!

I mean, really its like a train set. only one you can build on your computer with endless memory. No need for floorspace.

cause it does not use any of the simcity formula...namely isometric...big cities..big buildings..it does not expand on the MAXIS concept, but rahter..completly trashes it and and then throws it in a trash compactor for further deconstruction.Im an not going to say that this is the NEW SIMCITY 5.Rather im going to veiw this game as it is. a completly diffrent genre. that follows along the same lines as the monte cristo game simcity. or that other one that came out too but i cant reamber...Newyork? something...?..

well, those were fun games. taht a neat to play here and there.but, i miss the old isometric veiw.I think its sad that everyone is jumping on the "LETS GO 3-(FU%$##$) D everyone!!!!! yYEAHHHH"

Lets get back to our roots. 2-D. with 3-D feels..isometircs...lenometics...awsomeomtric...ok..now im jsut makeing them up....anyway..good thread..Its good to hear that the major majority of the sim fanfare is up in arms over this outrage. I am too. CALL IT ANYTHING YOU WANT>>!!! JUST DONT CALL IT SIMCITY 5. and i will enjoy this new title from EA and TM.

thank you for reading. my stupid rant.

SimCity without Maxis or Will Wright is just the money making machine of EA churning out basic content to wet the palette so that they can throw out 10 expansions to make as much $$$ as possible.

This is a game I will NOT be getting (the first Simcity I did not get).

Sorry but EA is on my s**t list and I refuse to give them any money. Last game I bought from them was SC4.

Well i would like to first say i have returned the game back to the store after playing Sim City for most of my life i was questioning whether to open it or not? This is how i feel about SCS, It may be a new direction but it has left out the simply things you would expect in a city ie, Trains, Airports, Seaports, Highways. Sure zoning is gone but so has the spirit of the game there is no customization something you would expect in building simuliation cannot edit land or add trees or animals. You cannot choose bridges and tunnels iam sure don't exist.

I fell the game has been left open for expansions and if its anything like the sims watchout you will be at the shop every month buying simple expansions which ea could had put into the game at the start the true sim city 4 will always remain in the hearts of true fans but sim city societies has attracted a new audience.

I sticking with the reviews from ign, this game is better left on the shelf if you want to build and customise a city with endless possibilities!

Dirk... i'm pretty dissapointed reading the reviews of everyone else, and having a BAD brain reaction checking out the snap shots! Never liked it.. total crap. Of course I think it's time take off the SC5 rooms cause we all know SC4 is better anyway.
