well... the public judgment is tat it is show off.. what can I say... vox populi...

    anyway. thank you.

Paul water material is built very similarly to that of glass. There are couple of differences though... it at all possible one should always go for VOLUME water (if it is to be a see-through one) unlike Glass water never has any reflection when you look at it strictly perpendicular. Water as Glass follows the Fresnel rules in reflections. Also waters IOR is smaller then that of glass - 1,3. Water color like color of glass should never be done with defuse!! use Fog color, or Color at depth (depending on the material type) to get it, or Refraction color if you make water with no volume. That is this simple.

If it were R$$$ I think that there would be too many R$$$ in the game and it would always degrade or go abandonded.

Ok… here is first render of full MetroHarborCity.

Well almost full… Some towers still haven’t got glass in the windows and few techfloor as well as roofs are missing. But it is overall entire complex.

Picture above is a "thumbnail"... to see the right size click on it! Also remember to make sure that resulting picture will be not "resized" by your browser.

Plants on the podium are just placeholders. In the final version plants will be of the same variety as in my Candy Garden found on STEX. This time over the color will be more realistic and compliant to the color scheme of the game – I mean those colors of the original flora, not what was created later on. I think all towers will be white - as they are white in real life and this way it will be a bit easier to do lighting of narrow spaces inbetween...

As for the questions I receive here and there to when it will be finally ready… at this point I can’t say definitely for couple of reasons. First of all there is still plenty of things to do – finish all modeling, then texturing complex part (UVW unwrap them), Night lighting. Also the export itself will be most probably done only after I’ll migrate to 64Bit system. This render that is about Zoom4 level at draft quality (this is one of Mental Ray – has nothing to do with the quality settings of BAT), so at his size and quality it took 53 min on my very biffed up machine and 1,2Gb of the memory. So at proper quality and Zoom5 level it most probably will push over 3Gb limit of the 32bit system. So, all things going right, it may be ready sometimes mid April.

Ok here is the view from other side (South) this time it is render of production quality… and surprisingly it is only about 2 times longer then the draft one… I’ll still try to optimize it further…

    fullsouthmedfm01thumbak3.jpg
again it is a thumbnail , yada, yada, you know the drill by now…

well it is big but not quite as big as you’ll imagine… All in all model is 272x80 which makes exactly 17x5 game squares.

Beautiful. That new pond water color looks much better than the previous one- fantastic work. 4.gif The only thing that bugs me the most is your bulbous trees. They don't look very nice anymore with those intricate towers. I'd like to see some of those lovely pixel trees you make, if it won't overload the file with polygons. 9.gif

    Gecko:

Actually the water is exactly the same - no changes there. It just shows that things like water and glass are defined by what is reflected in them and, due to the Fresnel nature of the reflectivity) the angle of view.

Those trees aren't really trees - just place holders for future trees. Speaking of the polygons... at the moment it is about 3 000 000 of them and it is far from being fully finished. Actually refining process on the buildings themselves wouldn't increase polycount by much, may even reduce it. But the planting will bring it through the roof. At the moment there are more then 120 "Ball Trees" if each of them would be replaced with even relatively "light" tree of about 50 000 polygons it will add 6 000 000 polygons to the scene... I have a gut feeling that I would be able to render it out only after moving to 64bit platform, which I'm gonna do anyway...

CarmineHilton and everybody else - thanx

That looks amazing! I am always inspired by people who do artist renderings like that, because I have no clue how to do that.
