A Note from the Author

First off, I'd like to thank everyone for making my last journal successful! I was very pleased with Haalu (and will still probably continue it from time to time). Hopefully this one turns out to be just as popular!

Anyways, welcome to my new journal, Sin City Chronicles! I wanted to bring something new to the Simtropolis Community, something not seen before. This new journal has been in the planning stages for quite some time and has finally become a reality. Making a journal based off of the Sin City novels by Frank Miller has been an idea for a long time of mine, but figuring out how to implement it into a journal while keeping to the roots of the source has been a road block keeping it from being started.

Until now.

Sin City Chronicles: A Recreation of Basin City will be 2 fold, part story, part recreation journal.

The Story Updates

For anyone who has read the books, or seen the movie, will know that Sin City is done in a stylish black and white, with splashes of colour to really create striking imagery. My journal will continue with this style, as I see it as essential in keeping the atmosphere true to the source. As well as being in this black and white style, I realised that, making the journal entirely of Sim City pictures wouldn't successfully capture some scenes that I would like to show. From that came the idea of throwing in comic book style images into the journal as well, and in the process giving a good mix of Sim City views and customized drawn views. This will give the journal a great artistic impression. All of these pictures that appear will be drawn by me, or done using other techniques.

The story, or group of stories, will all be of my creation. I'm only using the Sin City setting as a familiar backdrop to throw my characters in. Of course, we will most likely see or hear of some characters of Frank Miller's creation in the story as well, to tie the stories together, and really make the city feel like it came straight from the pages of the graphic novel.

There was one other thing I realized that I was going to have to do for this journal. The idea of an almost totally black and white city journal would probably not appeal to some people. After all, a lot of people come just for the pictures and designs of the city. Thus was born the 2nd part of this journal.

The Recreation of Basin City

Something I've never done before in Sim City was make a full sized, to scale city. In this journal, I will attempt to recreate Basin City as realistically as possible. By the time it is finished, I want it to look as much like a real city of similar size would look. It will include the city itself, expansive suburbs, towns and the countryside surrounding the city. One important note is that there are not maps of Basin City, so this recreation will be  of my own imagination.

For more information on the setting of Sin City, you can click here for information from Wikipedia The only parts I'd recommend reading is the Setting and the Characters. The other information for the most part will be irrelvant to this journal.

I've changed one minor thing of Basin City's location. On wikipedia it states that Basin City is located about 40 minutes outside of Seattle. I decided to still have it near Seattle, but at a further distance away.

Anyways, lets get started with the update!

First off a couple of scenery shots. They give a good idea of the terrain and climate the journal will take place in.

Here is what some of the countryside near Basin City looks like from Satelite, as seen on Google Maps (the scale on the bottom picture in the corner isn't meant to match the scale of this area, but rather to give an idea of where Basin City is located).

Here are 2 region shots. The first, a transportation map is a slightly scaled down and cropped image of the area in development so far. As you can see, I've done most of the far western countryside, and am currently working my way east with suburbs.

update12no5.jpg

This second one shows a satelite view of the full region, and the very rough plans of how far the suburbs will stretch, thats the red line. The blue line gives an estimation of the size of downtown in comparison with the actual size of the city.

Finally, expect to see these little previews each time a story update is coming up next update.

Brilliant start, TPP!! Although I've never read the novels, I am really interested in this journal (especially given the quality of your last one). Looks like this might be the beginning of a revolutionary new kind of CJ! Best of luck to you, TPP!

I didn't expect it to start so soon! I can't wait to see how you present this in classic Frank Miller style! This'll be a great inspiration on how to build my Metropolis region!

I've seen the water pics in Haalu, so I won't comment on those.

The street layout is one of the most realistic that I have seen - a good mix of grid and non-linear streets. Good idea in placing what looks like suburban developments in the middle of the farmland.

I've been awaiting this since you mentioned it in Haalu, and it's good to see it as a reality.

Thanks for the comments everyone. I myself haven't read the novels, so I'm mostly going by the movie and Wiki. As far as I know though, the Movie followed the roots of the novels very closely.

Anyways hopefully I'll get the story update out in a couple days.

    Hey TPP!!!!

What a start to your new CJ! Oh my, I really cannot say how beautiful it is. Those shots of your new terrain still make me want to cry, they are really just so beautiful.  And I love what you did with your farms. Such an excellent look.  I am really very curious how you made that satellite picture??? It really does look like it came out of google earth.

I think I can safely say that this new CJ will rival your last one in beauty. So much to look at! I just cannot wait for the next update!

its looking good, alas my wireless has packed up so i wont be able to see this cj for another 3 weeks >_<

will it be heavily photoshopped like your last cj or will the emphasis be focus else where like on the story?

jackel.22, It will still be photoshopped, but not to the same extent as Haalu. The Story updates will have more photoshopping then the progress updates, which I would say will probably be at a notch under Haalu (I probably won't be doing reflections since I love seeing the rivers with this terrain mod more).

kant01, The satelite picture was done messing around with the perspective option in photoshop, and some borrowing from GoogleEarth, map or whatever its called lol. I don't know if it will be as beautiful as Haalu per se, since its setting is meant to be of a gritty crime ridden city. Of course the countryside however is meant to contrast this, so it will be more along the lines of beauty.

Sorry if I don't reply to you personally. I do read and greatly appreciate all your comments. I'll be getting into more personalized messages soon. I'm busy at work on the story update however.

Wow, freakin' nice start, TPP! I haven't read or seen the Sin City Chronicles, so that'll be a good thing on your part if you mess something up with the city or story! Those satellite/transportation images look really awesome, and man, do you have a HUGE area to work with or what!!! Anyway, nice start, and I look forward to more!
