You did a good job with that pattern.  Can't say I didn't wish mine looked that natural after it was all done.  And you're right, it does take forever to get so many farms to build up that way.

This is a region shot of the province of Sereten. I have been working on this region since 2004 but now I am stuck. Here is how I left it.

Yeah, that's pretty much it. I just didn't know where or how to continue development along the coast towards the east and south of the mountains. On top of that, the older parts of my region where made when I did not have as much experience in terraforming around urban developments, so there are a lot of eyesores that would take too long to clean up. I will keep it of course, and I'm sure I will get back to working on it in the future, but for now I started a new region.

I present to you my newest region, Fortune... again, click the image for the full size.

What I usually do, is I plan what neighbourhoods are the older ones, which I use straight grid. Then I gradually make the grid irregular until i finally get to the newest suburbs. In the newest suburbs I usually make it so that there are no houses zoned along the major arterial avenues. As for the layout of the roads inside the subdivision, I made this diagram to show you how I plan it out.

suburbdiagrambj7.jpg

Primary Roads:

I usually have a primary road that connects the inside of the subdivision to the arterial avenue. Depending on how large I want the subdivision to be, I will have either 2 to 6 connections to the avenues. (In the case of the figure above I only have 2.) I have that primary road wind around near the center and connect back to the avenue. I try loop it around so there is no through traffic, you know how the Sims get when it comes to commuting.

Secondary Roads:

I usually make the secondary roads loop around the entire subdivision, intersecting at the primary roads in a couple locations. Of course the amount of intersections depend entirely on how many primary roads connect the subdivision to the arterial avenues. I usually (but not always) make it so the secondary road(s) are one complete loop with no start or end.

Tertiary Roads:

Tertiary roads is what I use to make up the cul-de-sacs and crescents.

The overall layout is designed to make residents living on tertiary roads to commute tfrom tertiary to secondary, to primary to arterial. Residents living on secondary roads should be able to commute from secondary to primary to arterial. Residents living on the primary roads should not deviate from the primary road in order to get to the arterial.

suburbzoningoj0.jpg

Zoning:

I zone in a "checker board" style to prevent houses from growing on larger lots. Depending on the subdivision I will alternate 1x2 and 1x1, having the city blocks 4 lots wide, and sometimes I will use 1x1s exclusively, leaving the city blocks only 3 lots wide.

I hope this helped!

This is my new region.  I'm still trying to learn this game so my road map (which i'm still working on SUGGESTIONS/COMMENTS WELCOME!!) may look weird.  The region was downloaded off of bsc exchange, however it has since been hand terraformed in many places across the enlarged 32x32 map.   if anyone has suggestions on how to take a pic of the WHOLE thing i'm all ears.

here it is

****EDIT***** updated the pic with a more recent one.  82008

aking88, how do you mean? Do you plop every single tree? Use god mode if you want to get more trees, it might not be exactly how you want it but at least you'll get a forest.. think of the environment god damn it!! 9.gif

as jacqulina have said the last five times, great regions everyone! like a robot.. hehe

Benedict, your region is very detailed and I liked how it wasn't just one big city but instead different parts of towns growing together.. that is more realistic I believe! So, keep it up people!
