About This File

A landmark in design and construction technology, the world-famousReliance Building was designed by Charles Atwood, a partner of DanielBurnham, in 1889. It has become the quintessential urban skyscraper, and its construction pioneered the system known as "Chicagoconstruction", in which a riveted steel frame is built, fireproofed, and surrounded by large windows (the main feature).

Sadly, such a landmark went through a dark age in the latter 20thcentury, becoming horribly disfigured, damaged, and occupied by somelowbrow establishments. But in 1995, a program to revive the buildingstarted. Today, it houses the Hotel Burnham, a luxury hotel, and CafeAtwood, a very good yet small restaurant on the ground floor. If youlook hard enough, you just might catch a little glimpse through thewindow.

The lot is 2x2, with a small alley on one side. Please pardon thestrange way the construction looks, but it was the only way I couldthink of to make the little side awning hang out over the street.

Lot: 2x2

Type: CS$$$ Growable

Time Spent: over 15 hours

Render Time: 3.33 hours

Have fun with it!

Looks very nicve and realistic - except the alley. You could have thrown in a little building there not to break the building line along the street. Otherwise excellent, i love real-world buildings. 10/10.

Very nice to see some classic Chicago architecture. Try your hand at the Rookery Building if you want a hard one :-)

I'm considering the parking-place change, as well as making this a BSC project. The Rookery is cool, but I'd rather do the Home Insurance Company (the very first skyscraper). More Chicago landmarks are in the works, though.

Very nice. As I tell so many people(but none listen), you should make a thread in the BAT forum! to show us of the progress of your buildings and get some comments ahead of time! i say this because you're too good not to be there!

If You are going for more Chicago, I would love to see the Tribune Tower... I have thougt of making it myself but i have not seen it IRL (yet) so i have not a grip on the details. But You have dont You :-)

The Trib Tower looks a LOT like Smith Tower, in the game, with a triangular side tower in the same style connected with a small (unused, I believe) skyway.

This is WONDERFUL! I wish that there were more Chicago buildings. They are seriously under-represented in the game/exchange. Thank you!

Awesome building. Looks very good! Only criticism: Black&Wh effect is cool, but I'd avoid doing that for your STEX pic because people want to see your color and texture. That's just minor, so top marks for you!

Nice, realistic-looking building - but why is there a big cloud of smoke coming out of the top in the game? Looks odd.

That's because there's a smokestack on the top. As I said in the description, it's an 1890s vintage building, with a steam heating system. The steam escapes at the top of the building.
