About This File
The tallest building in Hong Kong when it was constructed in 1950 (surpassing the old HSBC Headquarters [on the location of the current HSBC Headquarters] by 6.5m), the Old Bank of China Building is a Grade 1 listed building in Hong Kong. Its design took inspiration from the buildings on the Shanghai Bund.
Interestingly for (or perhaps because) a building that housed the Hong Kong headquarters of Maoist China’s central bank, the building’s interior is lavishly decorated with Italian marble and mosaic patterns imported especially from Venice.
Despite this, the Old Bank of China Building was a potent symbol of Communist China in the center of colonial Hong Kong. Communist propaganda was commonly displayed on the walls of the building, especially during National Day. It is notable that the flag that flew on the roof of the Bank of China was a PRC flag, as opposed to the neighboring HSBC Bank which flew the colonial or British flag.
During the 1967 leftist riots in Hong Kong, the building was bedecked in banners exhorting the people to overthrow the British colonial government. Loudspeakers were also installed on the walls and roof to that end. At the height of the unrest, barricades were erected around the building in anticipation of a crackdown from the colonial garrison.
With the construction of the (far better known) Bank of China Tower in 1988, the BoC moved its headquarters from the old building, giving it to a subsidiary instead. With the reorganization of the PRC banking industry, however, the building came back into BoC ownership in 1991, and has been so ever since.
